Game of the Year Awards 2018 - Most Promising RPG

by RPGWatch, 2019-01-31

Here are the games our readers look forward to most. The votes of the editors were all over the place, so no top 3 could be made.

Gamers' Choice: Cyberpunk 2077

CD Project's The Witcher series is a favourite with many RPGWatch members, with the Witcher 3 even capturing Game of the Year here in 2015. So its probably no wonder that many gamers have high expectations for Cyberpunk 2077, which hopefully will be released in 2019. Based on the Cyberpunk tabletop game, the game takes place in a dark future where megacorporations control the world and the masses are intoxicated by virtual entertainment.

This offers new opportunies for CD project's narrative talent, and seems to fit in well with their strengths. We hope Cyberpunk 2077 is able to live up to both the hype and its potential.

Gamers' Runner Up: Wasteland 3

Wasteland 2 was runner up for Game of the Year in 2014, and was also a game that lot of us at RPGWatch really enjoyed. It was also probably the best game that InXile has produced. This gives us hope that Wasteland 3 can live up to or even surpass its predecessor. Set in the post-apocalyptic American west, a small group of rangers tries to police the irradiated wastes. Its your job to try to protect resurging civilization from bandits, mutants, and other threats. We are looking forward to what post-apocalyptic Colorado has to offer

Gamers' Third Place: Realms Beyond

Two of our Game of Year picks, Pathfinder:Kingmaker and Pillars of Eternity 2, were strongly influenced by the D&D classic Baldur's Gate. Realms Beyond also was heavily influenced by D&D games, but goes back as far as the SSI Gold Box games. Next to that they list  games such as Ultima IV, Wizardry and The Bard's Tale. Realms Beyond features the D&D 3.5 ruleset, which is very similar to the ruleset used in Kingmaker. So with all this, it is no wonder that many of us have hope that Realms Beyond will be the next great epic fantasy rpg. Hopefully its developers can create epic quests and stories for adventurers to complete.
