GOG Giveaway - Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition

by Silver, 20:06

GOG is giving away action RPG Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition for the next 65 hours at time of posting.

In a near future ravaged by wars, corrupt regimes and devastating pollution, influential corporations have created the Genesis program in a last-ditch attempt to save humanity.

As the Captain of a Genesis starship, you journey into uncharted space on the ultimate mission. Build and manage a space vessel, farm resources, deal with terrifying alien infestations, clone creatures and explore a vast, randomly generated universe.

Go Rogue

Huge, randomised galaxies ensure every run in Genesis Alpha One is unique. Choose one of three difficulties or tailor the game to your playstyle with the Custom Game Mode. Discover new planets, circumvent asteroid fields and survive encounters with the Mechanics and Framen, space pirates who will board your ship to destroy your ship and all its inhabitants. Death is the end and once all your clones are dead, the mission is over. However, you will carry through artefacts unearthed into your next playthrough as well as unlock new corporations, making you more powerful with each attempt.

Build, Upgrade, Explore

Starting with a small vessel, you’ll have to build and maintain an intergalactic ark by combining dozens of upgradable spaceship modules including crew quarters, workshops, hangars, clone labs and greenhouses.
Using an intuitive building menu, easily snap together the pieces of your ship to tailor it to your playstyle. Develop your vessel and then explore your creation in first person.

Battle Alien Infestations

Alien infestations can spread quickly, contaminating the ship and crew. It’s imperative to wipe them out before you become overwhelmed and your ship is destroyed. An arsenal of weapons and defences can be researched to help you fight the alien threat. Unleash an array of powerful weaponry, research alien diseases to heal your crew, equip new abilities and deploy warbots to devastate the alien hordes.

Clone and Create New Lifeforms

As your ship grows, so must your crew. Using ground-breaking cloning technology, your crew will expand to meet the needs of the ship. Loot DNA samples from the aliens you encounter across the galaxy and splice them with members of your crew to give humanity a chance to prosper with abilities far beyond what was previously imagined.

Delve Deep Into Vastness of Space For Valuable Resources

In order to expand your ship and sustain your crew, you must explore planets fraught with danger. Gather elements such as Copper and Uranium and harvest plants to sustain life aboard your vessel. You may also find alien artefacts and intel from those explorers that have gone before, and not lived to tell the tale.

by Hiddenx, 14:25

GOG launched a Good Old Games Week with classic releases and deals:

Good Old Games Week

Hi All,

On this lovely Friday, we’re launching the Good Old Games Week, a dedicated event to put a spotlight on all the great classic games we have on GOG. We’re starting with more than 200 classic titles going on sale, with games like Blade Runner, SWAT 4, Heroes of Might & Magic, and a batch of releases with Re-Volt and Deadly Dozen Reloaded on the forefront.

We also felt we’re lacking something on GOG, and today we’re filling this empty space with a dedicated page for Good Old Games. Here you’ll be able to explore and discover all classic titles we managed to bring back to modern gamers – some of them are only available on GOG, some of them were fixed by our talented devs, all of them deserve a place to shine!

Below and attached you’ll find the press release as well as some assets. If you need anything, let me know!
We’ll have more things happening during the event, and I’ll make sure to keep you updated.

Have a great weekend!

GOG - Refocus on Core Offering

by Redglyph, 12:38

Wccf Tech reports a decision for GOG.com to restructure and refocus on a hand-picked selection of games, after poor results in the last quarter.

GOG to Refocus on Core Offering of Hand-Picked Selection of Games After Negative Financial Results

During CD Projekt RED's Q3 2021 earnings call, we learned of major changes coming to GOG.com after the digital store owned by the Polish company posted negative results in the last quarter (net profit was down by $1.15 million). Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz said there will be some restructuring and a renewed focus on offering a hand-picked selection of games.

"Regarding GOG, its performance does present a challenge. Recently we've taken measures to improve its financial standing. First and foremost we've decided that GOG should focus more on its core business activity, which means offering a hand-picked selection of games with its unique DRM-free philosophy. In line with this approach, there will be changes in the team structure. Some GOG developers who have already been working on GOG's online solutions mainly by the studio will transfer away from the project.

Furthermore, at the end of this year, GOG will leave the GWENT consortium. This means that it will neither bear its portion of expenses nor obtain the corresponding share of revenues associated with this project. Alongside all these changes we initiated through organization of GOG's operations, we believe that all of the changes we are introducing will allow GOG to focus more on its core business and improve its financial effectiveness in 2022."

As you probably already know, GOG stands for Good Old Games. CD Projekt RED launched the digital store back in 2008 with the specific goal to provide DRM-free versions of classic games. Over time, though, the store grew to be much larger and more akin to competitors like Valve's Steam, featuring regular new game releases, too.

It seems like the latest financial results have persuaded the Polish company to scale back this enterprise and focus once again on what made GOG special in the first place.

GOG - New GOG Galaxy Store Beta

by Hiddenx, 20:20

The GOG GALAXY 2.0 store supports multiple gaming platforms now:

New store inside GOG GALAXY launches in test phase

We created GOG GALAXY 2.0 to give gamers a better way of organizing all their games across multiple gaming platforms into one library. Since its launch, the most requested new feature has been the option to buy games not only from GOG.COM, but from other platforms as well, straight from the GOG GALAXY app.

Today, we’re happy to invite the first group of gamers to test the brand new store we’re working on, and share their feedback with us.

In the new store, we will be welcoming games from both GOG.COM and beyond - including titles previously exclusive only to other gaming platforms. With the internal beta launching today, invited users will have the option to buy games from a selection of hand-picked Epic Games Store exclusive titles, alongside all GOG.COM games. Most importantly, all purchases are covered by our 30-days refund policy as well as 24/7 human support.

There is still plenty of work ahead of us. As the internal beta test continues, we will be inviting more gamers, expanding the store's catalog and introducing new features. For a chance to be part of this test, join GOG GALAXY today at www.gogalaxy.com.

Swords and Pixels

In tabletop gaming, as well as in computer RPGs, so-called dungeon crawlers became a vanguard of the whole genre. The first known title of this breed was pedit5 developed for the PLATO system by Rusty Rutherford in 1975. Early dungeon crawlers, like dnd and Moria, were turn-based and had very crude visuals, yet they managed to inspire a whole generation of RPG creators and fans.

After Dungeon Master, a classic title by FTL Games from 1988, dungeon crawlers with a first-person perspective and real-time action became more popular. The game’s spiritual successor was the Eye of the Beholder trilogy from SSI and Westwood Studios with its eye-catching visuals and the rich Forgotten Realms world setting. Westwood then went on to create its own Lands of Lore RPG series with great music from Frank Klepacki.

Other classic dungeon crawlers worth mentioning are the Ishar trilogy from the French studio Silmarils and the Might & Magic series that later gave birth to the hugely popular turn-based strategy series known as Heroes of Might and Magic. Their legacy lives on, as we now witness a new generation of dungeon crawlers arrive on our modern computers. Here are 7 of them freshly made available on GOG.COM.

GOG - Galaxy 2.0: Unite all Game Launchers

by Hiddenx, 15:13

PC Gamer reports that GOG wants to unite all game launchers with Galaxy 2.0:

GOG's quest to unite all game launchers just might work, and Microsoft is already on board

GOG Galaxy 2.0 wants to bring every game library and social interaction to one open source program.

Steam, Origin, Uplay, the Epic Games launcher, Battle.net, the Xbox app—there are too many launchers. It's the mantra of 2019, growing in volume and cadence with each passing day. Game companies want as much control over messaging and money as possible, and pushing their own game ecosystems is the way to achieve it.

From a strictly corporate perspective, I get it. But as someone that literally forgot he owns Forza Horizon 4 from launcher overload, I'm mad. I won't get into the weeds over exclusives and platform superiority here, but there's no debate that splitting our game libraries and friends across six or so different programs sucks. No matter where you stand, there's likely no changing the current trajectory of launcher-mania, which is why I'm so surprised GOG might solve the launchers problem with, well, a launcher.

In an E3 meeting with GOG representatives, I got an early look at GOG Galaxy 2.0, the launcher that just might unify them all. It sounds too good to be true and the tech is still taking shape, but if it works I am all in.

GOG - Galaxy 2.0 Beta Signup

by Silver, 07:34

GOG Galaxy 2.0 is under development and beta applications are open.

What is GOG GALAXY 2.0 and why should I use it?

GOG GALAXY 2.0 is an application, thanks to which you'll be able to combine multiple libraries into one and connect with your friends across all gaming platforms, consoles included. If your games and gaming buddies are scattered between different launchers and platforms, this is a solution for you! Keeping track of all achievements earned by you and your friends, hours played, and games owned across platforms has never been this easy. And the application is entirely free, all you need is a GOG account to use it.

How can I add my games to GOG GALAXY 2.0?

In GOG GALAXY 2.0 you're adding games through official and community created integrations. By connecting platforms, the data about the games you own is automatically imported to the application. On top of that you will also be able to manually add single games that are not connected to any platform.

Will GOG GALAXY 2.0 show all my games, or only those I have installed on my PC?

Yes, GOG GALAXY 2.0 will show all your games from connected PC and console platforms... even if they are not currently installed.

GOG - Fair Price Package Ending

by Silver, 12:02

GOG has had to conclude its Fair Price Package program in order to offer better conditions to game creators.

On March 31st we are going to discontinue the Fair Price Package program. Let us explain the reasoning behind this decision. We came up with Fair Price Package (FPP) as a way to make up the price difference between various countries. Some games on GOG.COM have regional pricing, meaning the price of the same game in one place can be higher compared to its price in North America. In countries where the game is more expensive, we give users the equivalent of the price difference in GOG Wallet funds. In actual numbers, on average, we give users back 12% of the game price from our own pocket. In some cases, this number can reach as high as 37%.

In the past, we were able to cover these extra costs from our cut and still turn a small profit. Unfortunately, this is not the case anymore. With an increasing share paid to developers, our cut gets smaller. However, we look at it, at the end of the day we are a store and need to make sure we sell games without a loss.Removing FPP is not a decision we make lightly, but by making this change, we will be able to offer better conditions to game creators, which — in turn — will allow us to offer you more curated classic games and new releases. All DRM-free. We wanted to make sure you have some lead time to still benefit from the Fair Price Package. The program will last until the 31st of March, 2019, so if you would like to take advantage of it, now is the time. The funds you gather from the program will keep the 12 months expiration date from the moment you’ve been granted your last funds.

GOG - 10 Year Journey @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 20:09

PC Gamer interviewed CD Projekt about GOG - Good Old Games:

GOG's 10 year journey to bring old games back to life

An oral history of Good Old Games: How it began, and how they track down classic games and make them work again.

10 years ago, not long after a young CD Projekt had founded a development studio and released The Witcher, the company founded something else: GOG.com. Back then, though, GOG wasn't just GOG. It was Good Old Games, a new digital store aimed at selling only old games. So much has changed about the way we buy and play games in that decade, it's hard to remember that that was, in 2008, a strange idea.

Digital distribution is now normal. DRM-free games are pretty normal, too, and so is selling classic games. But GOG had to be pioneer these concepts as its inexperienced team of upstarts from Eastern Europe built a platform, convinced developers and publishers to join them, learned to become IP rights detectives, and figured out how to make old software run on new hardware.

This is the story of how Good Old Games began, and how GOG today tracks down classic games and makes them work again, in the words of some of GOG's key players.

Good old days

When GOG managing director Piotr Karwowski started working at CD Projekt as a web designer 20 years ago, they faced a serious problem: game piracy in Poland was rife.

Piotr Karwowski: In the early 2000s, before CD Projekt got into game development, we were distributing games in boxes. Piracy in Poland was a big issue, but what were immensely popular were rereleases of classics in a mid-price format, where in one box you could find Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment all for $15, packed with maps. It was all about focusing on value to fight piracy, and also making it hassle free, with no activations so it worked out of the box.

Years later, as digital distribution rose, CD Projekt founders Marcin IwiÅ„ski and MichaÅ‚ KiciÅ„ski saw potential in using what they’d learned in fighting piracy for something new.

GOG - Cooperation with Ars Technica

by Myrthos, 10:00

GOG and Ars Technica have started a cooperation. What the cooperation exactly entails is not completely clear, but for starters they are giving away free copies of The Witcher.

Giving away a game is just the first thing we're doing. Over the next few months, we're going to be testing out some cool integrations between Ars and GOG—most of it's under-the-hood stuff, but based on the talks we've been having with the GOG folks, it should be pretty neat.

Additionally, GOG has agreed to open up its archives to Ars and give us access to the developers who worked on many of the big games of the last 30-plus years, which ought to make for some excellent write-ups and stories. We're also looking forward to running a story or two on the complex methods GOG has had to employ over the years to excise copy protection and DRM from old titles, often without access to the original source code.

There's more, too—lots more. We'll announce additional initiatives over the next few months, so stay tuned folks!

GOG - Supports Cloud Saves now

by Hiddenx, 20:49

Pladio spotted that GOG supports cloud saves for classic games now - The Verge reports:

Steam competitor GOG Galaxy now supports cloud saves for classic games

PC gaming client GOG Galaxy — billed as a DRM-free alternative to Steam — is getting a big update that adds cloud-saving functionality to a number of games on the service. The software update, which brings Galaxy up to version 1.2, introduces what the company calls “universal cloud saves.” This is something that developers can add to new games released on the platform, but it also means that a number of classic games — which are big part of the GOG library — will be updated with the ability to sync saves across PCs and back up saves to the cloud.

At present, only a handful of older titles will support the cloud feature, including Planescape: Torment, Dragon Age Origins, Heroes of Might & Magic III, and Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines. But GOG says that it will be “constantly working on including this feature in more and more games,” including both new releases and classic titles. Your saves also won’t be tied just to GOG Galaxy. “Cloud saves are not locked behind the gaming platform,” the company explains. “At any moment users can download backup of their saves data and use it as they see fit.”

GOG - Summer Sale; System Shock 2 Free

by Aubrielle, 08:52

GOG's bundly, wallet-abusing Summer Sale has returned, and if you're quick, you can grab yourself a free copy of System Shock 2.

GOG have launched their big summer sale and yes, many fine games are very cheap right now but the important news is: System Shock 2 is free if you grab it within the next two days.

We have said many, many, many times that System Shock 2 is splendid. If you didn’t believe us enough to see for yourself: 1) I’m hurt; 2) it’s now free, for goodness’ sake. Now’s an even better time to check it out, mind, seeing as System Shock 3 is coming with Warren Spector onboard and all and the first game is being remade (pending a successful Kickstarter).

To grab SS2 free, download the GOG Galaxy client and use it to visit the storefront. I believe you won’t need to use Galaxy to play SS2 if you don’t want to, as it’ll appear in your library as a regular game, but you do need it to get SS2. As game store clients go, Galaxy seems pleasant and unobtrusive enough anyway.

Oh, and beyond System Shock 2, there’s that whole ‘GOG Summer Sale’ thing.

Every day, GOG will add more games to the summer sale. They’ve started relatively small but you’ll still find bargains on games including Bullfrog’s lovelies, ye olde X-COM (and the homage Xenonauts) Darkest Dungeon, Sunless Sea, Saints Row: The Third, The Witcher 3, and plenty more. Hit GOG’s site to see ‘em all.

The sale will last until Wednesday, June 22 at 1:59pm UK time (5:59am PDT). System Shock 2’s only free for another 47 hours, though.

If you’ve missed the daily fluff of older Steam sales, this has plenty of that. Check in, earn XP, gather badges… it all must mean something. You can get Spelunky free through that guff, which certainly isn’t a bad deal.

GOG - Offers Early Access

by Myrthos, 21:05

Good Old Games is now offering Early Access to games in development, which are DRM free.

GOG.com introduces early access, done the GOG way

All games DRM-free | 14-day refund policy - no questions asked | GOG Galaxy support

Warsaw, January 28 - GOG.com unveils its take on early access, featuring hand-picked games in development that are still being crafted and refined.

"Our goal has always been to offer a selection of titles that are both excellent and worth your time. Nowadays, we're seeing more games that are already great experiences while still in development," says Piotr Karwowski, GOG.com Managing Director. "We want all gamers on GOG.com to have access to what these titles have to offer, but we want to get it right, carefully evaluating each and every game, offering a 14-day refund policy, and providing GOG Galaxy support with update rollback and more."

The first five games in development launch today, fully DRM-free, with launch discounts up to 40% off:
- Starbound
- Ashes of the Singularity
- Project Zomboid
- TerraTech
- Curious Expeditions

It takes some confidence to discover games that are still being shaped - and to build that trust, every game in development comes with a simple refund policy: 14 days, no questions asked. It doesn't matter if you're having technical issues, if you don't think the game is fleshed-out enough yet, or if it simply doesn't click with you - all games in development can be returned for any reason.

To deliver a better experience with games in development, the optional GOG Galaxy client offers both automatic and manual updating, as well as the unique rollback feature.

"If a game update breaks something or introduces unwanted changes, GOG Galaxy lets you easily rollback to any previous version of your game while you wait for the fixes," says Piotr Karwowski. "As an added bonus, rollback actually stores historical snapshots throughout a game's development - that means you can always revisit any point in the game's history with a single click."

Today's five releases are just the first steps in a unique, new take on games in development. More titles will be released in the future, featuring a selection of the most promising games and those most highly requested on the GOG.com Community Wishlist.

The launch discounts will last until February 2, 1:59 PM GMT.

by Aubrielle, 18:31

Pillars of Eternity, Legends of Eisenwald, Satellite Reign, Wasteland 2, and a lot more big titles are 50-75% off at GOG right now, for the next three days, if you've been waiting.

Gaming sins are a regrettable thing. Whether they come from games you shamefully put aside without finishing them, from questionable methods you used while trying to finish them, or from borrowed discs that you claimed were already scratched - they might all give you trouble sleeping. But the worst offenders are always the games you should have picked up and never did. Well, worry not, fellow sinners, for our Weekly Staff Picks: New Year Absolutions will help you settle the bill with the Gaming Gods and venture into the rest of the year as a whole new person!

GOG - How To Save And Restore Classic Videogames @ Rock, Paper, Shotgun

by Hiddenx, 16:19

Rock, Paper Shotgun with an interesting article on how GOG is getting their games:

“Hunting for distribution rights is essentially detective work,” says Marcin Paczyński, Head of Product at GOG. “Rights can repeatedly change hands or be split up between different parties, and it’s our job to get to the bottom of what happened.”

Preservation of old games involves more than just an extra patch. The journey from dusty unplayable relic to polished, cross-platform installer is a minefield of technical and legal obstacles. The team at Good Old Games remain the industry leaders in the restoration of classic PC games, tasked with reverse engineering code written more than 20 years ago, unraveling knotty licensing issues left behind by defunct development studios, and battling lethargy on the part of skeptical publishers. It’s a thrilling and, at times, gruelling process, but – as the GOG team will testify – it never fails to surprise.

Good Old Games is having a pinata sale. You can buy a pinata for $3 and find an indie game in it.

Mystery Games for $3 and deals up to 80% off.

The Indie Piñata is a whacky gaming sale brought to you by Crunching Koalas and GOG.com, a weeklong celebration of diverse indie games - organised to help gamers (you) discover great indie titles without breaking the bank. Instead, we'll break the Piñata!

There's so much stuff.
There's stuff alright, with plenty of video game stuffing. We've got a hefty selection of deals up to 80% off - all indies, all highly recommended - this includes titles like Kerbal Space Program (-33%), NEO Scavenger (-50%), Legend of Grimrock 2 (-75%), and MouseCraft (-80%), so that you can pick and choose what you play (but it's probably best to get them all just in case).

GOG - Rescuing 13 Forgotten Realms Games

by Myrthos, 22:46

PC gamer has an article up informing is on how GOG rescued the 13 Forgotten Realms games from licensing hell and made them available again.

In the 1980s and ‘90s, the roleplay system Dungeons and Dragons was huge, and so were the spin-off video games set in the Forgotten Realms—titles like Pool of Radiance, Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Hack and the awesomely-named Menzoberranzan. Why have you never played them? Because, like Planescape: Torment and Baldur’s Gate, they’ve spent twenty years lost in licensing hell. And Good Old Games has finally tracked them down.

For Good Old Games finding the missing games, establishing who owned which parts of them, and getting them into a playable state has taken many years. Their first step was to work out who owned what. After all, the original developers SSI disappeared into Mindscape in 1994, before being passed through The Learning Company, Mattel and Ubisoft—and this game was licensed from TSR, who closed in 1997.

As GOG’s Oleg Klapovsky explained to us, “with classic games like those from the Forgotten Realms series, years of mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies can really leave the rights sitting in very strange places... like banks, or enormous conglomerates. Sometimes the original documents aren't even digitized, so somebody has to physically head down to the figurative cellar and dig through countless cabinets.” On top of that, the art, the music, the license, the digital distribution rights, the code can all be owned by different people.

So GOG went to SSI, and hence to Ubisoft, who were also the publisher of the first SSI game. “After considerable back and forth, it unfortunately (though perhaps fortunately for us) turned out to be a dead end.” says Klapovsky. “The rights were not with Ubisoft. They were sold or left behind somewhere along the way.”

Thanks Pongo.

GOG - Indietastic Game Sale

by Couchpotato, 05:22

GOG has a new sale for the weekend called the Indietastic sale. The sale contains quite a few games, and one RPG game called Inquisitor. Here are the full details.

Battle Worlds: Kronos, Ether One, Blazblue Calamity Trigger, and more Indietastic titles up to 80% off!

You know GOG.com has a lot of affection for the indie scene and for plenty of reasons. Some devs take on risks that none of the big AAA powerhouses would dare to consider, introducing original, untried concepts into their games. Others look to the past to re-create the feel and mood of the finest titles in the history of gaming, the ones that still give gamers a warm and fuzzy feeling, while adding their personal touch to create something fresh. To give you a sample of what we consider Indietastic this weekend we have a selection of 31 games on sale. Let's take a look at some of those titles:Dyad, a one-of-a-kind shooter, is a psychadelic trip at warp speed and straight into the audio-visual nirvana.

Marcin Iwinski - Interview @ Forbes

by Couchpotato, 07:05

GOG & CD Projekt Co-founder Marcin Iwinski is interviewed on Forbes about the company's latest changes at GOG.com. You may remember they sell movies now.

Forbes: The major selling proposition about GOG.com, both in gaming and now in movies, is the sale of DRM-free goods. What do you see as the demand there? How big is that market for GOG.com, and could the big publishers – of games or films – be persuaded to abandon DRM? What would it take, in your opinion?

Iwinksi: Since 2008 – when we started with just one gaming publisher and 30 games in our catalog – we have expanded our games library to more than 750 titles from 200+ partners. We have millions of visitors every month, not to mention millions of dollars of generated revenue for our partners. Why does it work? Simply because people want to feel that they own what they buy and are free to use their purchases as they see fit.

Although in the digital world it is only a file, it is still a world of difference. We believe that DRM is nothing more than an unnecessary annoyance and that all digital distribution should be free from it.

To talk about numbers – our revenues for last year were at the level of $20M and that’s only for games. Considering the fact that most of our sales are still generated from classic games, you can clearly see the potential for growth. We are moving more and more into the new games segment, but we also thought our model should perfectly extend to movies and TV shows. We obviously want to include classic catalogs of the movie majors and we believe that we can achieve this just the way we did with the gaming majors: convince them with numbers, and show them that it is not a threat, but instead a chance to grow their business.

GOG - Accidentally Gives Away Games

by Couchpotato, 15:36

Polygon has a new article about GOG.com accidentally gives away thousands of games for free. The plus side is they are not demanding anybody give the games back.

Here was GOG's response to the glitch.

Hello

Thank you for your honesty. Yesterday, due to a small glitch on our end, you and a bunch of other lucky people ended up getting games from the Linux Launch promo for free. Don't worry, though, as it's totally cool with us and you may keep them. Yes, we will not be removing these titles from your account and we do hope you will enjoy them! :)

Of course, if you prefer, like some of our community members, we can always remove them your shelf - just let us know replying to this email. Again, there's no problem if you want to keep them :)

GOG - Now Supports Linux!

by Couchpotato, 14:46

GOG.com has officially launched support for Linux games. Here are the details.

GOG.com Now Supports Linux!

50 games for the free OS available right NOW!

A while ago, we've announced our plans to add Linux support as one of the features of our digital platform, with 100 games on the launch day sometime this fall. We've put much time and effort into this project and now we've found ourselves with over 50 titles, classic and new, prepared for distribution, site infrastructure ready, support team trained and standing by, and absolutely no reason to wait until October or November. We're still aiming to have at least 100 Linux games in the coming months, but we've decided not to delay the launch just for the sake of having a nice-looking number to show off to the press. It's not about them, after all, it's about you. So, one of the most popular site feature requests on our community wishlist is granted today: Linux support has officially arrived on GOG.com!

The first 50+ titles we've have in store for you come from all the corners of our DRM-Free catalog. Note that we've got many classic titles coming officially to Linux for the very first time, thanks to the custom builds prepared by our dedicated team of penguin tamers. That's over twenty fan-favorite GOG.com classics, like FlatOut&Flatout 2, , Darklands, or Realms of the Haunting we've personally ushered one by one into the welcoming embrace of Linux gamers. That's already quite a nice chunk of our back-catalog, and you can expect more from our dedicated Linux team soon!

Now, for the recent titles. We've got some indie games with native Linux versions that finally find their well-deserved spot in our store. Among them, debuting on Linux, CLARC - a well received original comedic Sci-Fi puzzler. On top of that, be on the lookout for two new additions to the GOG.com catalog: Gods Will Be Watching (coming in a couple of hours) and Unrest:Special Edition (Linux build coming right up!), both of them very fresh and intriguing. This is the very first time we can provide you with all the PC versions of a premiere game, and we will continue to do so in the future. If there's a Linux version of a title we're releasing, our aim is to deliver it to you Day-1. But enough about us, let's talk about the games. Here's what you can be playing on Linux today:

GOG - Nostalgia is a Powerful Drug

by Couchpotato, 15:42

Polygon has an interesting interview with a few staff members from GoG.com. The interview talks about older games, DRM, and the new GoG Galaxy.

Let’s say that you’re trying to play Dungeon Keeper, a game that came out in 1997. That piece of software was designed to work with a version of Windows that is seven generations old. There’s no earthly reason it should play on a modern computer.

And yet there are people out there who can make it work.

Scattered across the internet, devoted fan bases secret that kind of information away. One team in Poland is constantly reaching out to these communities and soliciting their rarified knowledge, collecting and digesting their expertise so that other gamers don’t have to. All in the quest to automate the process, so that older games can be played just like new ones; with a single click.

"If someone is in the community for a game that was released 15 years ago," says Magda Oracz-Chomiuk, "then that’s somebody that really loves that game." As the head of product management for GoG.com, she should know. She deals with them every day.

"It’s not about money for them," Oracz-Chomiuk says, "It’s just about the games."

So, we'd like to heartily invite you to the GOG.com Party that will be taking place on Thursday, August 14, from 5:00PM to 10:00PM local time, in one of the local pubs not far from where the GamesCom main show will be located.

Cheat Code Central - GOG & Abandoning DRM

by Couchpotato, 13:23

Cheat Code Central has a short article from one of their editors about abandoning DRM, and using GOG instead of Steam. So what do you guys think?

Here's a confession for you: I don't use Steam. In fact, I refuse to. Besides only having a medium-powered laptop that can't handle much of anything available for consoles, I am also staunchly opposed to DRM. I'm sure Valve has only the best of intentions for their customer base and consumers in general, but DRM is DRM. If I buy something, I want to own it. I know that's an antiquated notion in 2014, but that's just how I am. Luckily, that's where services like GOG come into play. If I'm going to buy digital, I don't want to have a mandatory online connection just to play.

GOG - Gamers & DRM @ Load The Game

by Couchpotato, 04:44

Load The Game has a few comments from Guillaume Rambourg the Vice President of GOG North America. He states that gamers should not be treated as criminals.

Developers, publishers and service providers should not focus on treating paying customers as criminals with restrictive DRM (digital rights management) according to GOG. Speaking to Eurogamer Guillaume Rambourg, vice president of GOG North America, said: “DRM is only impacting the good-hearted passionate gamers out there. The very same gamers who are ready to spend $50 or more to own their favourite triple-A title and support our industry.”

“Going through some cumbersome online activation procedure? Sometimes even having to connect to the Internet to activate the single-player mode of your favourite title? Or even worse, being obliged to remain online to play that single-player mode? That’s not really the best way to reward those faithful gamers who just spent quite a chunk of their monthly income to buy your game.”

“Our industry should be cherishing and treating all gamers with respect, those people who pay our wages, servers, development projects and what not. Instead, we just make it frustrating for them to buy games. How schizophrenic is that? DRM is not protecting any product. It is harming your fans and your brands in the long run.” Rambourg highlighted research conducted by the company into The Witcher 2, which when sold DRM free on GOG.com saw far few pirate copies being downloaded than it had done when distributed through Steam and other services. He believes that this is because they are treating gamers as adults and with respect, adding: “Let’s make it easy and rewarding for gamers to buy games. They are not criminals and they do not need DRM.”

GOG - Interview @ Games Industry

by Couchpotato, 00:43

Games Industry.biz has a new interview about the recent GOG Insomnia Sale. The interview includes both GOG's VP of North America Guillaume Rambourg, and VP of Business Development Oleg Klapovsky.

Klapovsky said the team had underestimated how popular the Insomnia promo would be. When they first tried it last year, they queued up a list of deals they figured would take customers maybe two weeks to burn through. Instead, they snatched up all the deals in just five days. And that's even with some games that struggled to sell through their allotted copies.

"There were some blockers we didn't expect," Klapovsky said. "I still remember the game Jack Keane 2, that appeared during the night European time, and it postponed the next game for six hours or so."

The GOG forums soon lit up with players frustrated by Jack Keane 2's continued presence as the lone discounted game. Rambourg said users began asking each other to buy copies just so they could cycle through to the next deal. Later on in the promo, Rambourg said the GOG team decidedly to lightly troll the fans, bringing Jack Keane 2 back in the rotation with an absurdly large allotment of discounted copies. That gag aside, Rambourg insisted they play fair with the counter. If a game stubbornly refuses to sell and brings the promo to a halt, then so be it.

"Honestly, I think it's part of the fun that some games might block the whole process," Rambourg said. "It's just like life. It's never black or white; it's always gray... Let's see what happens. People talk, they interact, they have fun with it. We don't see the promo as something that should be carefully scheduled, that should be totally smooth."

The good news for GOG is that bumps like that are just part of the entertainment value for those following along. The better news is that the Insomnia promos have been working. In the first 24 hours of the most recent sale, GOG saw 620,000 unique visitors come to check out the deals. About 90,000 games were sold in the first two days of the promotion, and in the first wave of titles, each game was only offered for an average of three minutes before all the copies were snapped up. Theme Park was the fastest seller, moving three copies a second for the brief time it was on sale.

GOG - Interview @ Eurogamer

Eurogamer interviewed Marcin Iwinski the co-founder of CD Projekt about whether GOG would be open to selling Early Acces Games. Here is a sample of his answers.

Early Access releases are becoming more and more common - almost routine - but that's not necessarily a good thing. "Scam" release Earth: Year 2066 was hauled off Steam for misleading customers and taking their money. And while that's an extreme case - and there are also many good Early Access games - there are enough milder examples of developers not quite delivering what fans who paid them believed they would, to make Early Access a concern.

It's against that backdrop that I raised the topic with Marcin Iwinski, co-founder of CD Projekt, the company that established and owns popular retro-game download shop GOG. He's considering Early Access, he said, but there are a couple of things GOG would have to change first.

"We're obviously looking at it," he begun. "As you know our concept is different; first of all it's DRM-free and second it's curated. I'm often very lost in a lot of stores - apps being my example today. Or even Steam. I don't know what's happening; there's hundreds of releases a month, and I really believe - and our community's clearly showing that - there is a place for a platform which is choosing the stuff.

"With the approach that Steam has they decided not to, and it's fine, it works extremely well for them and some developers, but it has threats like the one of bad Early Access games. And it's tempting, it's really tempting: you're a developer and you can get to Early Access and charge 40-whatever for your game, for your non-working alpha. And they're pocketing immediately.

"We would definitely consider it," he said, "but again it would be the GOG way. It would have to be curated and, we believe - we are always saying this very openly - we are responsible in front of the gamer for what they're buying on GOG."

GOG - New Indie Mix Sale

by Couchpotato, 06:30

GOG.com is having a new sale I missed called the Indie Mix Sale. You still have about a day left to buy a select bunch of games for up to 85% off.

Be sure to use the follwing link here to help support the site.

Miasmata, the Geneforge Saga, Hotline Miami, and more up to 85% off!

Indie games are always throwing something interesting into the mixed bag that is gaming. Untried concepts that would seem like a risk to the big AAA publishers (whose games tend to have budgets that require scientific notation) are brought to life. Concepts such as an alternative version of Texas, or an 8-bit open world romp through the video game memories of yesteryear have all been brought to us by indie games with all the attention to detail and love of the craft that an indie developer can provide.

GOG - Goes Linux

by Myrthos, 12:21

There aren't many newsbits to find here covering a Linux game, unless it is about a PC game that happens to be running on Linux as well, so it isn't really a platform we look at when we try to bring you news on RPGs.
Good Old Games however has decided to bring you DRM free Linux games this fall and they intend to start with a library of at least 100 games.

We just wanted to announce that, after much deliberation, we've decided that one of the next steps for us is to support Linux. Now, we're not ready to launch Linux games on GOG.com just yet. We've only been working on bringing these Linux games to our service for a few months, and there's lots more to go, but we wanted to let you know what's going to be coming this fall to a digital distributor near you.

We're initially going to be launching our Linux support on GOG.com with the full GOG.com treatment for Ubuntu and Mint. That means that right now, we're hammering away at testing games on a variety of configurations, training up our teams on Linux-speak, and generally getting geared up for a big kick-off in the fall with at least 100 Linux games ready for you to play. This is, of course, going to include games that we sell which already have Linux clients, but we'll also be bringing Linux gamers a variety of classics that are, for the first time, officially supported and maintained by a storefront like ours.

This is, as we mentioned, something that we're in the early stages of, so we can't talk about what games will be a part of our GOG.com on Linux gaming launch--in part because we, ourselves, don't know what those games are--but we hope that you're excited about the fact that we're able to set "GOG.com Support for Linux" in our community wishlist as a task that is "In Progress." We know we are!

GOG - Regional Pricing Plans Abandoned

by Myrthos, 12:19

A few weeks ago Good Old Games announced a change in the pricing of their games and they would go to regional pricing in order to be able to make DRM free games available to everybody sooner.

That created quite some comments on the GOG forums and last week Marcin Iwinski and Guillaume Rambourg let everybody know that they are returning to their roots to offer DRM free games with fair pricing.

We're not perfect, we're exploring new frontiers, and we make mistakes. We thought DRM-Free was so important that you'd prefer we bring you more DRM-Free games and Fair Price was less critical and that it could be sacrificed in some cases. The last two week's worth of comments in our forums (nearly 10k!), show that's not the case. We didn’t listen and we let you down. We shouldn't sacrifice one of our core values in an attempt to advance another. We feel bad about that, and we're sorry. Us being sorry is not of much use to you, so let’s talk about how we will fix it.

One: DRM-free forever. Abandoning fixed regional pricing means it will probably take longer to get some games, but you've made it clear that sacrificing fair pricing for more DRM-free games isn't acceptable.

Two: We will adamantly continue to fight for games with flat worldwide pricing. If that fails and we are required to have regional prices, we will make up the difference for you out of our own pockets. For now it will be with $5.99 and $9.99 game codes. In a couple of months, once we have such functionality implemented, we will give you store credit instead, which then you will be able to use towards any purchase and cover the price of it in full or partially. Effectively gamers from all around the world will be able to benefit from the US prices.

This will apply to every single game where we do not have flat pricing, such as Age of Wonders 3 (full details here), Divinity: Original Sin, and The Witcher 3. If you remember the Fair Price Package for The Witcher 2, this will be exactly the same.

Three: We still intend to introduce the pricing in local currencies. Let us explain why we want to do it and how we want to make it fair for everyone. From the very beginning our intention was to make things easier for users whose credit cards/payment systems are not natively in USD. The advantages are simple because the price is more understandable and easier to relate to. There would be no exchange rates involved, no transaction fees, and no other hidden charges. However after reading your comments, we realized we have taken an important element away: the choice. In order to fix this, we'll offer the option of paying in the local currency or the equivalent in USD. This way, how you pay is always your choice.

Four: You are what matters, and we will be sure to involve you all more in what we're doing and why we're doing it. Let's start by meeting you at GDC - we’d like to invite you to meet us face-to-face Monday the 17th at GDC. Obviously, not all of you can come to San Francisco, so we want to invite all of you to an online event with us early in April to ask us whatever you would like. More details soon.

The bottom line is simple: there may be companies that won't work with us (although we will work hard to convince the most stubborn ones ;). Yes, it means we might miss out on some games, but at the same time GOG.com will remain true to its values and will keep on offering you the best of DRM-free gaming with Fair Prices.

Once again thank you for caring so much about GOG.com. We will work hard not to disappoint you again.

GOG - Doomdark's Revenge Released

by Couchpotato, 05:26

GOG.com has released a classic game called Doomdark's Revenge for $5.99.

Doomdark's Revenge is a revamped version of the 1985 game, retaining its gameplay and graphical style, just adding some more intuitive interface and high resolution graphics. At its core, however, this is the exact same title that enthralled the imagination of many gamers almost three decades ago. The turn based game mixes elements of an adventure with a robust, well-written storyline, an epic wargame in which you manage and command large armies, and a role-playing game with much focus on exploration of the game's incredibly detailed landscape. You already slew the evil Witchking Doomdark, now you're up against his wicked daughter, Shareth, the Witchqueen of Carnage. This is no easy task, as the sequel introduces a whole new level of independence to the NPCs whose help you need to complete it, and beating the game in any of the possible ways will prove quite a challenge. Let one of the oldest, yet greatest stories ever told in a computer game unfold before you!

GOG - World of Aden Promo

by Couchpotato, 00:24

GOG.com is selling two classic RPGs called World of Aden: Thunderscape and Entomorph.

Both games set in the World of Aden up to 70% off

Thuderscape and Entomorph: Plague of the Darkfall, two very different classic RPG titles sharing the original setting of the World of Aden, are available bundled on GOG.com with 70% discount. That's only $3.58 for both for the next 24 hours.

In 1995, that is 19 years ago, Strategic Simulations Inc. set out to create a whole new fantastic universe that would become a canvas, on which they would depict epic campaigns and heroic sagas. The legendary developer team decided to take the popular pulp-fantasy tropes, put them through a grinder, mix in some steampunk pizzazz for that special coppery aftertaste, and slap a catchy--and a tad pompous--name on their creation. Thus, the World of Aden came to existence. It never became as popular as some of the fantastic realms of eternal fame, and it only witnessed two heroic campaigns in the end, but it surely deserves its place in the role-play gaming hall of fame. Today, GOG.com invites you for a trip to this amazing forgotten land.

GOG - Interview @ Arstechnica

by Couchpotato, 05:16

Arstechnica has a new interview from Wired.co.uk with GOG’s Managing Director Guillaume Rambourg about DRM.

Wired.co.uk: What was the story behind setting up the GOG.com website?

Rambourg: It all began in the mid-90s, when friends Marcin Iwinski and Michal Kicinski started their business as retail distributors in Poland. Back then, Poland was a very highly pirated market, with most gamers using outdated hardware and not having too much money to spend on games. That's a tough market to break into: one where people aren't used to paying for games.

To convert pirates to paying customers, the founders of CD Projekt introduced a budget series of classic PC games which quickly became one of the company's best sellers. The reasons for the budget titles' success was both kind of simple and also kind of complex. The budget line was made of carefully picked top quality games with tons of goodies (manuals, posters, world maps, and whatnot) made available at an attractive price.

It's since been proven in many arenas that pirates are willing to pay for computer games if they feel that the price is equivalent to the game's value, but this was new and crazy thinking at the time. From there, Michal and Marcin dreamed bigger: if it worked in Poland, why shouldn't it work worldwide? Going DRM-free was a natural consequence of this train of thought: if you trusted your customers to pay for reasonably priced games, why would you want to use copy protection and treat gamers like potential thieves?

Wired.co.uk: Did the situation in Poland regarding piracy mean you considered DRM in a different way from other digital distribution sites, or is it a universal problem that you were hoping to find an alternative solution for?

Rambourg: Trust and respect for your customer is quite a universal set of values, I think. It's not always been a very popular value in the computer gaming industry, sadly. Our founders' Polish market experience was important, because it proved that you could build a successful business model on trust, even in a difficult market. DRM is an ineffectual tool (games are still being pirated at launch—if not earlier!—even with state-of-the-art DRM systems) and it antagonizes paying customers, because effectively the pirate is getting a less constricted gaming experience. This is crazy. Our belief in trusting and respecting our gamers who are part of GOG.com remains at the core of how we approach our customers.

Wired.co.uk: Do you feel that DRM policies are getting better or getting worse overall?

Rambourg: I wouldn't necessarily like to differentiate between those policies. Sure, some are more annoying than others, like the always-online requirement, which practically stops you from playing your game if you don't have an Internet connection available at all times, but all in all, DRM is just terrible as a concept. With no real progress in its efficacy, big publishers and developers are trying new, more aggravating ways of copy-protection. Thankfully, the resistance from gamers is stronger than ever before. Wins, like the recent Xbox DRM policy reversal, caused entirely by gamers' strong reaction, prove that tolerance for DRM is dropping.

GOG - Fallout Games Removed

by Couchpotato, 04:23

GOG.com has news that every Fallout game has been pulled off their gaming catalogue.

Removed from catalog: Fallout 1, 2, & Tactics

Today, we bid farewell to the legendary post-apocalyptic 2D classics.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we needed to pull the three classic Fallout games, that is Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, from sale and remove them from our DRM-free catalog. These classic titles have been with us since day one, that is for over 5 years now, and they were always one of the highlights of the selection of games that we offer. There are very few titles in the history of computer role-playing games, that have had so much impact on the gaming landscape, players' expectations, and even the popular culture. The iconic setting, the memorable quotes, and unparalleled amount of fun and challenge these games provide--it's all burned in the memory of a whole generation of gamers. Probably even more than just one generation. It was an honor to have you here, Fallout. Take good care of yourself out there, try not to mistake a gecko for G.E.C.K. (not even remotely the same thing!), and remember to take your Rad-X pills!

All those who acquired Fallout, Fallout 2, or Fallout Tactics on GOG.com prior to the date of removal (that is before Tuesday, December 31st 2013, at 3:59PM GMT), will still be able to download the games' install files (as well as the bonus content) via the "My Games" section of their user accounts. Gift-codes for these three games acquired in our recent giveaway are no longer valid. However, if you own a gift-code for any or all of them that was purchased outside of the said giveaway, you'll still be able to redeem it in the foreseeable future.

GOG - Let's Party Sale

by Couchpotato, 11:23

GOG.com is having another huge sale called Let's Party to go along with the New Year. You can find a variety of new bundles to suit any taste. Here are the details.

Let's Party Promo!

Say farewell to 2013 and welcome 2014 with 15 special bundle deals up to 80% off.

2013 is coming to an end. Oh, what a fun year this was to be a gamer! Especially a PC gamer, as our console brethren got quite a sizable share of stress and frustration along with their fun, mostly due to the controversy around the new console generation DRM policies. Luckily, the NoDRM movement scored quite a success there, and some of the gamers' worst nightmares did not materialize in the end. Meantime, here at GOG.com, it was another year of DRM-free gaming. We got bigger, we got better, and our catalog of the best games in history got more extensive. Business as usual. It was a good year to be a GOG.com user, and we can promise you this: the next one is going to be even better!

But you're probably anxious to hear about our promo for today, right? Well, we did wrap up the 2013 DRM-Free Winter sale last Sunday. But this doesn't have to mean we can't offer you some amazing deals today still! Remember all those bundles and packs that competed for your support to become the daily community choice? Holiday season is upon us! If you are a long-time GOG.com user you know well enough--or if you're relatively new to our service, you're about to learn--that we just love offering great games for free whenever it's possible. This year for instance, we've given away innumerable copies of the action-rpg gem Torchlight. Today, we're taking our gifting habit a step further. For the upcoming 48 hours you'll be able to add Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics to your GOG.com collection, completely FREE of charge. GOG - BOOM! Black Friday, Baby! Sale

by Couchpotato, 04:32

GOG,com is having another huge weekend sale with 65 games that are 70% off.

Weekend Promo: BOOM! Black Friday, Baby!

65 assorted games 70% off, no risk of getting trampled!

The time has come to unveil our special Black Friday promo First, let's put things in some perspective, though. There are a few great things about the Black Friday retail festivities, and one really, really bad one, that kind of spoils all the joy for many people. On one hand, you can go out there and grab consumer electronics, games, movies, and other tech-goods with insanely attractive discounts, finally getting those things you wanted, but without the guilt of paying too much for stuff that's not essential to your wellbeing. On the other, you risk getting seriously battered-up in the process, as hundreds, or thousands of other people will be trying to do just the same and they won't take competition kindly. Each year people get injured in their pursuit of great deals. Badly injured! Killed even! Even if the media blow the thing way out of proportion, the risk still exists.

Why take any risks? You're entitled to great Black Friday deals without exposing yourself to raging crowds. Take the digital route, this year! We've prepared a huge selection of titles for you, and applied a huge discount to all of them. Games that usually cost $9.99 are now available for only $2.99. Titles with $5.99 regular price tag are up for grabs for only $1.79. That's 70% off discount on a selection of 65 fantastic games. You can greatly expand your DRM-free collection and emerge victorious from this whole Black Friday ordeal, without staring into Death's cold eyes even once. You don't even need to rush in--we give you plenty of time to plan your purchase, so you don't end up with something you bought because it was dirt cheap, not because you really wanted it. That's Black Friday GOG.com customer love style! The offer lasts until Tuesday, December 3, at 10:59AM GMT.

GOG - Wasteland 1 Now Available

by Couchpotato, 14:09

GOG.com announces you can now buy the original Wasteland  for $5.99. Remember the game is free if you were a backer of Wasteland 2. Here are the details.

Pioneer the post-apocalyptic open world.

Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, a post-apocalyptic open world full of awe and danger, as imagined in a 1988 RPG, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com

They say that ever since the nuclear holocaust, America is no longer a place for heroes. They say, that it is no longer the land of the free. Know, that they've been lying to you. In the atomic wasteland of the year 2087, there is still room for bravery, justice, and order. There are men and women standing guard to what is left of civilized society, facing villains, mutants, bandits, and monsters on daily basis. When everyone else just gave up, they roam the ruins of our nation's sinful past, and do the impossible to bring law to the badlands. They are the Desert Rangers, and this is their story.

Back in 1988 Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic (or just Wasteland back then) took the fresh memory of living in constant fear during the Cold War, reached for the aesthetics of the Mad Max movies, added solid cRPG mechanics, and offered gamers an experience that would soon inspire a whole gaming sub-genre. Long before Mr. Ron Perlman announced to the world that "war never changes" in the iconic opening sequence to Fallout, the post-apocalyptic grim future was a vision already present and persistent in the minds of gamers. That was mostly because of Wasteland. The open-ended free-roam gameplay, paired with incredibly rich and suggestive setting made a lasting impression on everyone who dared to visit the nuclear desert. With challenging difficulty level and great variety of NPCs, quests, and locations, this fantastic title is still a blast to play!

GOG - Activate Autumn Weekend Sale

by Couchpotato, 04:35

GOG.com is having another weekend promo with a few RPGs included .

Weekend Promo: Activate Autumn

Get Arcanum, Pharaoh + Cleopatra, Vampire: The Masquerade, Quest for Glory as well as all the other "Quest" games, and more amazing Activision titles 60% off!

The days grow shorter, the weather gets nastier by the day, but as a trade-off, there's more time for gaming in the evenings. It's time to Activate Autumn, with a superb collection of 32 memorable titles. Oh, wait... that's wrong. What I meant was: 32 game boxes. Some of them contain more than just one game, so the actual number of discounted Activision titles amounts to impressive 55! And you can get them all 60% off until Tuesday November 12 at 4:59 AM GMT. Let's take a peek into some of the boxes!

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura summons the spirit of Fallout into a unique world where steampunk meets fantasy in a creative mixture of imagination and pure isometric RPG awesomness. In Arcanum, you get the absolute freedom to create any kind of character you want and pursue whatever quest you find the most fitting. If you're looking for a game that will drain dozens of hours of your free time and have $2.39 in digital loose change--here's your best pick!

Gabriel Knight, a tormented young writter, came to be a celebrity of the point-and-click adventure genre. The first game he stars in--subtitled "Sins of the Fathers"--features beautiful pixel-art graphics, over 7000 lines of fully-voiced dialog, and a dark story balancing on the verge of madness and occult. The game launched a successful and recognizable series that earned its place in the adventure games' hall of fame. Be sure to check the other two games that complete the trillogy: Gabriel Knight2: The Beast Within and Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

Quest for Glory 1-5 is an amazing collection of Sierra's innovative action-RPGs. Each of the five games can be played as a whole but you can also treat the series as one big adventure, as the character and his accumulated wealth can carry on from one game into another. Become a mage, a thief, or a knight and explore the five huge worlds, each based on a different culture and mythology, from Germanic fairy tales, through Arabian and Slavic folklore, right down to Greek myths. Experience the game that set many standards in the "new school" of computer RPG.

GOG - Classic Gem Promo: Darkstone

by Couchpotato, 22:35

GOG.com is having a new sale on the classic hack-and-slash game Darkstone.

Darkstone, a classic hack-and-slash that introduced 3D graphics into the genre, will have you hacking through hordes of horrors with a 60% discount on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours.

When your legal name is "Lord Draak" and you wield the power to transform yourself into a giant dragon, becoming an evil overlord seems like the obvious career choice. Then, if by some strange and totally unexpected twist of fate, you end up deprived of your magic, banished from the realm, and nearly killed you are, again, left with not much of a choice. You obviously need to gather back your minions and devise a new evil plot to terrorize the land and rebuild your reign of fear, violence and darkness. Right? RIGHT?! Well, tough luck, Lord Draak, this game is not about you. It’s about the valiant heroes that are out to get you. Let's repeat that part: Out. To get you. Right. Now.

In Darkstone a party of up to four adventurers sets off on a quest to free the realm of Uma of its oppressor. In the co-op multi-player mode each player controls one of them. In single-player you can switch between two characters and the computer will take control of the one you leave unattended. There are four provinces to explore, each with its own set of quest-filled, procedurally-generated dungeons to keep you busy and boost the game’s replay value. If you enjoy hacking the minions of evil and slashing through one dark, damp dungeon after another, preferably with some friends at your side, but this title somehow is missing from your DRM-free collection, today is the best day to grab it!

GOG - Witcher Story Contest

by Couchpotato, 02:08

GOG.com is hosting a new contest were you can send in a short story to win a few Witcher shirts, and medallions.

Creative Contest: The Witcher Short Short Short Story

Give us a 100-character Witcher story. Win official The Witcher t-shirts and wolfhead medallions!

Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy saga upon which CD Projekt RED's The Witcher universe was built, consists of five novels. The legend of Geralt, however, began with a 1986 short story. Even in his very first feature, the white-haired monster hunter was already a complete and fully-developed character with unmistakable personality and demeanor. It's amazing just how well the debuting author managed to define the hero and his reality in such short form. This was 27 years ago, though, and the current forms of communication have taken a turn towards haiku-like limited form. It's amazing what people are able to convey within 140 character limit. One might imagine, that nowadays, you could see a complete fantasy short story in under--say--100 characters. In fact there's an example of one, just below this post.

Do you think you would manage to squeeze a Witcher story within 100-character limit? If you think you can, tweet it with the #GOGWitcherStory hashtag. That's 100 characters of the actual story + 16 characters of the hashtag. Alternatively, you can give us your story in the forum thread below. Naturally, the 100-character limit applies here just as well. Two entries per person tops (each of them still needs to be a separate, self-contained short short short story). Prizes? Of course there are prizes! Authors of the 3 best stories will receive exclusive The Witcher: Wild Hunt t-shirts, and wolf-head medallions. 4 runner-ups get just the medallions. All the winners will also get one $5.99 GOG.com gift-code, each. The deadline for submissions: Friday, October 18, 9:59AM GMT (the GMT part is important!).

GOG - Interview @ IncGamers

by Couchpotato, 00:48

IncGamers interviewed GOG’s Trevor Longino about DRM, piracy, and the future.

IG: GOG is perhaps best known for having a firm no-DRM (Digital Rights Management) stance, which I believe you’ve had from the very start. Was that a decision informed more by ethics, or by business?

TL: A bit of both, but I’d lean more heavily on the ethics of DRM informing the business decisions. We were already opposed to DRM, and when the founders started the company, we knew that if there was one thing that would be sure to anger people who wanted to play classic games–which don’t have DRM, by and large–it would be to add DRM on top of them. Making a game substantially worse for the consumer and then selling it? That sounded like madness.

You probably note that the same argument applies to new games: why would you take something that doesn’t naturally have DRM and then add it, which makes your game worse for paying customers? That’s a good question, and we still don’t know the answer to that.

IG: Is there any situation you can envisage where DRM might be acceptable? Perhaps one in which an asteroid can only be prevented from striking Earth through the addition of DRM to a videogame.

TL: No – humanity is dooooomed!

Honestly, if that was somehow required for the continued existence of humanity, of course we’d be willing to put up with it. While it’s true that psychologically, games are practically required for a healthy consciousness, computer games are not. Video games are a hobby, not a necessity for life.

You can construct circumstances where DRM is acceptable, but I’d note that it’s not necessary. Adding DRM to games is like adding DRM to books or music–it’s been done, but both of those industries are learning that it doesn’t actually make any difference in piracy.

GOG - Square Enix Catalog Sale

by Couchpotato, 06:03

GOG.com has a new weekend sale going on were you can save up to 60% off all Square Enix games.

As of 0615 hours this morning, we have confirmed massive signs of a noncorporeal invasion force that is determined to directly hijack our entertainment and slowly invade everyone's minds. Fast work by some of our Unusual Circumstances SpecOps team has funneled these aliens into a containable area, though. We have managed to secure them in a select list of video games--specifically titles like Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Thief™ Gold, Anachronox, and a few more--and the non-corporeal aliens are currently inhabiting the enemy A.I. routines. That means we can find them, we can fight them, and we can kill them.

The space-time rift that the aliens are using to invade is unstable and our physicists project that it will close on Monday the 16th September at 23:59.59 Eastern Time. CENTCOM has arranged for a video game retailer to steeply discount the usual price of these titles to facilitate intervention--they're all 60% off for the duration of the invasion.

You've been contacted because you're part of the elite few who can handle an assignment like this: we need you to buy these games, install them, get in there, and kick some alien butt. The world's counting on you, soldier.

GOG - Thunderscape Released

by Couchpotato, 01:46

GOG.com has released a classic 1990s dungeon crawler called Thunderscape.

Thunderscape, a classic 1990s dungeon crawler with real-time exploration of a vast and diverse underworld and challenging turn-based combat against many fearsome fiends of chaos, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

The world of Aden is in great peril. The demonic, corruptive power known as the Darkfall fills the world with monsters, abominations, and evil-inspiring artifacts. The realm is in dire need of defenders, and it's your job to lead them against the forces of chaos. You will explore a dark and dangerous underground to reach for the power you'll need to bring the light to where darkness reigns. A small party of stalwart adventurers seems to stand little chance against the hordes of evil. It's up to you to prove, that miracles do happen in fantasy worlds.

Thunderscape presents you with many time-proven RPG ideas that work together so well, that it's astounding that anyone would want to modify them. You get a party of six brave champions, a large gameworld to explore, lots of items to collect, stats to build, and enemies to slay. While roaming the world, the game progresses in real-time, switching to turn-based combat whenever you approach (or get ambushed by) an opponent. With everything that made dungeon crawlers so successful in the 1990 and some very distinctive steampunk-ish feel, this game is highly recommended to all cRPG fans looking for a challenge!

GOG - DRM-Free Works

by Couchpotato, 01:09

Games.On.Net has the second part of the interview with GOG about why drm free works.

GON: Now obviously GOG has been about no DRM from the start – has that ever caused any problems with any of your relationships with traditional publishers? Or any developers that you’ve spoken to who have wanted to release something — maybe you’ve said, “Hey, we’d love to release your old game on GOG,” and they’ve said, “Oh, but you don’t have any DRM, do you?” Has that ever been a sticking point?

Trevor: It can be. There’s a very persuasive argument we have, which is money. You speak to a developer or you speak to a publisher and you say, “But look at all the money we’ve made!” They’re like, “I guess this ‘no DRM’ thing can work!” Of course, for certain scales of money, you know — we went to EA, not initially, not in the very beginning. At the beginning we were like, “Well, we’ve been open for three months and we’ve sold this many games” and this is the kind of money we had experience with and EA was like, “Eh.” They wouldn’t have cared about that much money because we were a brand new company that had just started.

GON: Yeah, small change.

Trevor: Then we added EA what, eighteen months ago, I think. Maybe a little bit more than that. By that point we had Interplay, Activision, Atari, I think we had Ubisoft by then. So we had this stable of big companies who had joined in and we had a large user base and we just said, “This is where we are, this is what we’re doing.” There are still some problems, but the problems are increasingly less about “We don’t want DRM-free games for our classics” and more like either, “Man, we don’t know who owns the rights for this,” or just, “We don’t have anybody whose focus is restoring old content at this company, so we have no idea who you should talk to.”

GOG - Discusses DRM with AusGamers

by Couchpotato, 03:25

GOG is interviewed by AusGamers on DRM and the sites goals for the future.

AusGamers: With the recent explosion in crowdfunding, we’ve seen many independent studios promising to publish DRM-free copies of their completed games, but all major publishers remain averse to even experimenting with selling their smaller budget new release games without copy protections. What do you think the main reasons for that are?

GOG.com: First and foremost, the reason for using copy-protection is "decision-making by spreadsheet." For some of the mentally lazy people in the industry, putting a tick in a "piracy protection" box is enough to help them sleep at night. DRM, of course, doesn't do anything to fight piracy, as it is the first thing to go when a pirated game is uploaded to a torrent site. The only people affected by the DRM are, unfortunately, the legal users who bought the game with their own money.

As to crowdfunding, it is actually an interesting way to combat piracy, because you are actually selling the game BEFORE it's possible to pirate it. It is another instance of the human relationship acting more effectively than any DRM to boost sales - whenever the creators have an ability to show their face and showcase the people and process behind game development, they become humans and not a faceless corporation. This makes convincing people to pre-order much easier.

AusGamers: It’s clearly absurd when rights holders directly attribute every unit pirated as a lost sale, but do you think some games are more at risk for potential revenue to be impacted by piracy than others, such as those with more casual-user appeal?

GOG.com: I don't think that distinguishing between casual gamers and hardcore gamers is helpful here; I think that people who have created something that is distinctive and different and have put the time into building a passionate community are more insulated against piracy than people who release shovelware. People are smart: when it looks like a developer didn't care about the game, then they tend not to either. Passion, engagement, craftsmanship - these are the things that put value into a game, and that value, in turn, is what sparks the gamers to invest their money into it.

AusGamers: Even with old classic games, I expect large publishers would be extremely reluctant to allow those to be sold without any copy protection. What is the general approach GOG takes when convincing publishers that making their game available in your store is in their best interest?

GOG.com: In business, the most convincing arguments come from hard numbers: when we started in 2008 with the Interplay catalog we had help from sister company from CDProjekt, who had been distributing games in Poland since the 90s, about the correlation between sales and DRM. The data supported our belief that DRM does not increase sales or limit piracy in any way. Along the years we have been able to gather more data on the subject specific to different types of games we have been releasing: classics, but also newer AAA titles and brand new indies.

Across all those game categories the numbers show how useless DRM is at everything it was supposed to achieve. So why penalize the gamers for no reason? More and more publishers are understanding our message and our data is enough to convince them to give it a try. However, some companies are just not ready to go DRM-free yet, even if they understand and agree with the numbers we provide. There is only so much we can do.

by Couchpotato, 03:37

GOG has a new game available called Rogue Legacy for $14.99.

Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero. Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be color blind, or they might have Tourette's. They could even be a dwarf.

That's OK because no one's perfect, and you don't have to be to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die, all of the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade your manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

GOG - #NoDRM Summer Day 6 Sale

by Couchpotato, 03:19

GOG continues it's #NoDRM Summer Sale with two new bundles available for the next twelve hours.

In the RPG Rarities Bundle, we offer you a selection of five recent notable indie role-playing titles for only $14.95. Each and single one of them is unique and special in its very own way. Evoland is as much of a console-style action-RPG, as it is a nostalgic retrospective of this genre presenting its evolution from the early 8-bit era to modern times. Anodyne also draws inspiration from Zelda-like titles, but uses these time-proven gameplay ideas to tell a allegoric story of an inner trip into one's own subconsciousness. Sword of The Stars: The Pit is a fun and addictive modern roguelike game delivering a great level of challenge and replayability in a colorful, yet ominous, hard-SciFi setting. The Real Texas provides unexpectedly deep and refined gameplay mechanics paired with a zany, yet at times thought-provoking story and colorful and silly art-style. Finally, there's Costume Quest taking us on a Halloween-themed trip into the land of kids' imagination executed with Double Fine's signature charm and creative gameplay mechanics. All of these games truly deserve to become a part of your collection, but we know they get often overlooked in the company of larger and more celebrated RPG titles that are aplenty on GOG.com. You can see what you've probably been missing out on for 75% less than usually.

There are few genres available in our catalog that can be compared in their popularity to the RPGs. Managerial strategy, especially of the city-building and managing kind, is one of them. Today, with 70% discount, you can grab the Builder's Boon Bundle, a whole pack of such games. The phenomenal Hellenic Acropolis (Zeus+Poseidon) and its Egyptian counterpart Pharaoh + Cleopatra will allow you to raise the legendary empires to their full ancient glory. Children of The Nile will allow you to stay even longer in the amazing setting of ancient Egypt and rule the people from generation to generation, thus forming a dynasty destined for immortal memory. Caesar 3 will let you witness, protect, and build even further the glory of Rome. In Lords of Magic you'll get to run your very own fantastic kingdom, taking car of its military, resources, and even diplomacy. Finally, Lords of the Realm: Royal Edition (1+2) and Lords of the Realm 3 will take you back to the medieval times, where your rule can turn the tide of historical events. All that multi-layered and deep strategic goodness can be yours for only $16.13!

GOG - The DRM-Free Revolution

by Couchpotato, 00:27

Forbes contributor Erik Kain has an interview with managing director Guillaume Rambourg of GOG.

“It’s hard for the industry to think this way,” Rambourg says, “but consider this: if Zork I had an always-on internet connection requirement, do you think it would still be possible to sell the game 33 years later and have it work? It does work just fine on GOG.com, and the rights holders make revenue on this great old classic, but that’s because it’s not crippled with a short-sighted DRM policy. Of course, it wasn’t possible to use DRM like that back in the day, but I think it’s best for all of us who like seeing the classics that shaped gaming that it wasn’t.”

Always-online should be reserved for MMORPGs, Rambourg says, because large online games are built with an always-online internet connection in mind. It’s the point of this sort of game.

“However,” he says, “using an “always-online” feature for games that very much look and taste like single player titles is really a worrying trend to me and just like any short-sighted fasion out there, I hope it will just vanish in a near future.”

Mostly, however, Rambourg thinks the company’s success boils down to something simple: customer service.

“We treat our gamers like humans,” he says, “not criminals—and I think this is why our community is so active and faithful.”

Like any relationship, fostering trust between a business and its customers is crucial, and CD Projekt and GOG.com have figured out how to cultivate trust and respect with a tough crowd: gamers. The video game industry should take note. Abandoning DRM may sound risky, but abandoning your customer base is a far greater threat to the bottom line. If anything, CD Projekt and GOG.com have illustrated how important service is to the video game industry, and how adding value and treating customers with respect can pay dividends.

GOG - Wizardry VI-VIII Available On GOG

by Couchpotato, 00:26

GOG just sent out a press release announcing the last three chapters of the Wizardry series are now avaible on their service .

Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant is $5.99 and Wizardry 8 is sold as a stand-alone for $9.99

The cult classic RPG series Wizardry finally arrives on GOG.com

DRM-FREE DIGITAL DISTRIBUTOR RELEASES THE BEST GAMES OF THE WIZARDRY SERIES: WIZARDRY VI: BANE OF THE COSMIC FORGE, WIZARDRY VII: CRUSADERS OF THE DARK SAVANT, AND WIZARDRY 8

(23 May 2013) -- Gather your party and prepare for some dungeon crawling! GOG.com, the DRM-free home to the immortal classics for PC and Mac, has delivered another all-time great in its catalog: it's time for some Wizardry! The last three entries to the genre-defining classic RPG series are available now at GOG.com.

Wizardry, set in a world boldly mixing fantasy and Sci-Fi themes, has gathered quite a cult following of loyal fans along the years. Celebrated for creating one of the most complex storylines in RPG history and equally praised for its unmistakable sense of humor, the series is still perceived as one of the most influential creations in the history of RPG games. Wizardry games have appeared on many "all-time best" lists and have received numerous distinctions, such as RPG of the Year (Wizardry VII, Wizardry 8; Computer Gaming World), Best Role Playing Game of 1991 (Wizardry VI; Power Play), Top Ten Best PC Games of 2001 (Wizardry 8; GameSpot). With one of the more intricate class systems in the history of the genre, over 700 (yes, SEVEN HUNDRED!) hours of gameplay, and an import feature, allowing players to finish the entire trilogy with the same six-character party they started out with, the Dark Savant Trilogy follows up on the promise of an epic adventure. Wizardry 8, the last entry to this celebrated series, is also a proof that a smooth transition to the next generation of games is possible. A thoroughly modern makeover of its 2D predecessors, that took 9 years to finish, the game has performed an uncanny feat of updating its architecture into 3D, without losing any of its character.

With releases of Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant, and Wizardry 8, this summer might turn out to be an all-indoor season for cRPG lovers old and new. Wizardry VI + VII (including the original DOS version, and the Wizardry Gold edition of the title) will be available on GOG.com for only $5.99 and Wizardry 8 for $9.99 from Thursday, May 23 2013, 6:00 AM EDT!

GOG - Survey Results

by Couchpotato, 17:03

GOG has posted results of a recent survey. The questions on the survey dealt with  topics on DLC, DRM, and pre-release alphas. Prepare to be surprised by the results.

Thanks go to PCGamer for the newsbit.

In almost all cases, the surveyed customers voted in favour of the additions. That’s somewhat surprising. GOG have historically focused on bringing old, DRM-free games to digital distribution, and creating bespoke special editions through bonus content. That might suggest a user base who would be sceptical of the modern industry’s love of extending a game’s life through additional post-release content. That, apparently, is not the case; although it’s worth remembering that the survey wasn’t set up to judge whether these features are popular or liked, just whether they should be allowed into GOG’s catalogue.

Of the general survey questions, the most supported potential addition was DLC, followed by episodic games and “Early Access” alphas. All three got over a 60% positive response. DLC and Episodic Season Passes also got majority of support, although these proved more controversial, with 52.29% and 56.23% yes votes respectively.

The only proposed plans that failed to gain majority support were for non-MMO multiplayer games requiring some form of online activation to access. Serial Key protection was narrowly rejected – 50.47% said no – while a third-party account was overwhelmingly dismissed, with over 70% of respondents dismissing the idea. Understandable perhaps, except the response was quite different when users were given specifics.

Planetary Annihilation was offered as an example, with GOG noting that it’s online and skirmish focused, DRM-free for offline, but also that: “A unique key is required for Internet multiplayer, and an account with the developer’s service is only required for the persistent online features.” Given this choice, almost 78% of respondents were happy for the game to be sold.

Which makes it hard to draw firm conclusions. At best, the thing to note is that, far from people being immovably against DLC, or even DRM, consumers are more interested in judging things on a case-by-case basis – and what bonuses they’re being offered as a result of perceived negatives.

As for GOG, as well as assuring they’ll be considerate with their offerings of DLC And episodic content, they conclude by saying, “any game that we bring you guys with persistent multiplayer features will be at least as offline-friendly as Planetary Annihilation is.”

Good Old Games - Relaunches as "GOG.com"

by Dhruin, 11:59

Good Old Games has relaunched as "GOG.com" (if you're failing to notice the difference, the words have gone). They'll now be adding newer games, have refreshed the site and Legend of Grimrock is an exclusive new preorder:

Bigger.
Year after year we’re getting bigger and so our service needs to adjust. Bigger means more users, and therefore more website features, more social interaction, more customer love. Bigger means AAA new and newer titles and more partners--and especially developers!--signed every month. Bigger means a mix of the classic titles that you’ve come to know and love from GOG.com and newer with the kind of great gameplay that makes them feel like instant classics.

Fresher
GOG.com does not need a brand-new start. We’re doing great and hundreds of thousands of you agree that the road we’ve taken is the right one for the industry to follow. However, spring is nearby, and a little cleaning to spruce up the place is never amiss. Fresher GOG.com means changes to the website layout, which now offers a more modern look; it also means we’re featuring our Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus accounts at the footer of every page and more social integration overall. Fresher means more of the features you want. The My Account page now has a built-in search feature, new organization options for the games library, and the website is no longer the only way to deliver notifications to gamers. We’re offering the new, faster than ever GOG.com downloader, which integrates support for downloading game patches, goodies, and notifications to keep GOG users up to date on changes to games they have purchased, replies to forum threads, or PMs.

There's also an interview at GameSpot if you'd like to read more.

Good Old Games - Anachronox Now Available

by Dhruin, 20:47

GOG has released Tom Hall's classic, Anachronox:

Anachronox is charming, intelligent, witty, fun, and entertaining from the very first minute you start until the final lovingly-crafted moments of the engaging story. The game is not simply an RPG: it combines Japanese-style elements (like fairly linear story, cinematic direction, and turn-based non-random battles) with Western-like side quests, dialogues, and sense of humor, mixing in some puzzles and a story straight from an adventure game for good measure. Yes, the game was known to be kind of buggy at launch, but a pair of official patches and a later pair of fan-made patches have taken care of that and you can play it with virtually no issues. The most important thing is that the story flows like an entertaining novel--light-hearted, bizarre, and humorous, but at the same time the gameplay is addictive and challenging.

Good Old Games - Thief Gold Now Available

by Dhruin, 22:11

Thief Gold has been released on GOG for $9.99:

Garrett, the main protagonist in Thief trilogy, is one of the gaming’s most appealing hidden anti-heroes. Sure, he’s a thief (and a killer!), but he makes it up with sarcasm, intelligence, and rougish appeal. Thief’s surprisingly elaborate storyline throws Garret between a rock and a hard place where he needs to restore the political and magical balance of the city by using silence, stealth, and thievish skills as a weapon. The chaotic Pagans and technological Hammerites are preparing to tear the city apart in their battles with each other, and it seems that only a little judicious theft can keep these titani forces from clashing. No matter who's the employer and who's the victim, he plans to stay neutral and is always upholding his beliefs with a simple key principle: always get the loot.

...and Rock, Paper, Shotgun has an article on installing it and a widescreen mod, fixing the non-working videos and so on.

Good Old Games - Starflight 1 & 2 Released

by Skavenhorde, 15:48

Starflight 1 & 2 are now available on GOG. They were the best space opera adventure RPG games I played as a kid and still replay to this day. If you can handle the clunky UI (compared to games now-a-days) and the basic graphics then you are in for a treat.

Overview:

In Starflight 1 you embark on a mission to save the galaxy’s future by discovering the secrets of its past. With over 800 unique planets in 270 systems to explore, you never know what might lurk behind the next star. Each newly explored system might lead to a powerful artifact, a mysterious alien race, or another piece of the puzzle that will unravel the ultimate mystery. And that's the really great thing about this game: the feeling of exploration and fulfilling that deep human need that drives us towards the unknown.

Starflight 2 keeps all the great gameplay of its predecessor, but makes everything bigger and better. Many aspects of the game were vastly enhanced: the game’s diplomacy, the size of the galaxy, and the number of alien races you can interact with are all improved the second time out. The gameplay—if not the graphics—are reminiscent of another classic game in our catalog where you wander around the galaxy exploring stars and chatting with humorous aliens who want to control the galaxy. The plot starts you out in a standard science fiction mode, but it builds to a fascinating and satisfying climax at the end. Basically, if you enjoyed Starflight 1, the sequel will be right up your alley.

Good Old Games - "Good New Games"

by Dhruin, 11:25

The CD Projekt conference also produced news for GOG, as they look to add new games in the future. The press release:

Newer games to be added to catalog as the DRM-free digital distributor sets its sights on being the second largest independent digital distributor on the 'Net

(WARSAW, POLAND -- 17 November 2011) GOG.com, the DRM-free digital distributor with a difference, announced its plans for 2012 and 2013 today, stating that it while it will continue to add classic titles to its catalog it is also pursuing newer titles, it seeks to continue its impressive growth rate over the next two years, and looking for exclusive release opportunities with certain developers.

Speaking to a room of investors and journalists, Managing Director Guillaume Rambourg stated, "GOG.com has been performing very well the last three years, as we've mentioned previously both at CD Projekt conferences and at venues like the London Games Conference last week. We have an audacious plan for the the next two years to continue GOG.com's success story, and that depends on three things.

"First, we will be adding newer games into the catalog in 2012. Traditionally, GOG.com has looked for great classics that are three years old or older. We will continue to add classic games, of course, but we are actively working to sign newer titles now. Of course, these new titles will have to come at a new, higher price point, but our key focus will always be on the same core values that have made GOG.com great so far: completely DRM-free games, flat prices everywhere in the world, and extra content and goodies for our fantastic customers.

"Second, the consistent growth that GOG.com has had since we launched in 2008 has been a great success story. We've been profitable since our first month, and the fact that we've come from nowhere to bring over a million classic gamers to our website every month and over six million games downloaded proves that gamers want an alternative to the usual digital distributors. We want to continue this growth, and we have a plan for this: more than 400 products in our catalog by the end of 2012, combined with new partners, more franchises, and continued improvements to make GOG.com a better website will help us achieve this goal.

"Finally, we want to work closely with ambitious developers and independent publishers who feel a kinship with that 'good old spirit' that GOG.com embodies. Thanks to the commercial success of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, more and more people realize that our values are universal. They are coming to GOG and asking if we can carry their titles. We’ve made GOG.com the destination for classic PC games, but now is the time to take this to the next level and emerge as the best alternative digital distribution platform for all PC games.”

Good Old Games - Ultima 4+5+6 Released

by Dhruin, 00:22

GOG has released a pack of Ultima 4 + 5 + 6 for $5.99:

Experience fantasy role-playing’s most distinctive and award-winning series in this special three-game collection. Ultima: The Second Trilogy follows the spellbinding tale of the Avatar in this richly detailed and challenging story. The setting is medieval Britannia, but the stories are timeless and involve universal issues that explore the essence of virtue. First, there is the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment in Ultima IV, where your personal ethics are tested in a treacherous struggle to demonstrate the eight virtues of Avatarhood. Then in Ultima V, you rely on your new-found strengths and skills to oppose a tyrannical leader who warps the virtues you uphold through his twisted legislation of morality. Finally, in the epic concluding chapter of Ultima VI, you, the Avatar, must resolve the cultural conflict between a race of hostile creatures and your own. It all adds up to a relentless test of character in a world where things are not always as they appear, and evil is not easily defined.

Thanks, Frozen Fireball!

Good Old Games - EA Games Added - Including Ultima Underworld 1/2

by Dhruin, 01:08

GOG has added EA to their catalogue, including Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld 1 and 2:

In a ground-breaking, earthshaking, and jaw-dropping deal we've managed to sign with EA and will be releasing more than 25 legendary classics from the globally renowned publisher. With today’s announcement three widely known and much awaited brands get the revival treatment from GOG.com: Wing Commander: Privateer, Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld 1+2.

We will be adding more than 25 titles from EA over the next few months, so the games will be unveiled gradually, but we can already reveal that the next upcoming titles from this huge deal are: Crusader: No remorse, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Magic Carpet.

While the agreement between Electronic Arts and GOG.com brings back many acclaimed and well known franchises, it doesn’t include the much anticipated System Shock or Syndicate series at this time. After releasing the first six Electronic Arts classics, we will take a break from the concentrated awesome until later in the summer.

As a bonus you'll get 2 manuals, 15 wallpapers, soundtrack, 13 avatars, 87 artworks, a map and the Throne of Bhall reference card. I never really know what to think of the bonuses. Good Old Games - NWN Module and Model Contest

by Skavenhorde, 14:49

GoG has two types of contests going on for Neverwinter Nights Modder out there.

In the first contest you are tasked with creating a module titled, "The DRM Monster and The Treasure of GOG".

The second contest is a little more difficult. You need to create a model of the evil DRM monster.

The top five entries for the module contest will get five free games each.

The top entry for the model contest will earn the winner three free games.

You have until November 24th to submit your module or model.

Here are the guidelines and rules:

Module Guidelines:

1. 3 Areas: an interior starter area, an exterior transition area and a final interior.
2. No custom content. You can only submit a module file (no haks), a character file (see #5) and screenshots (see #8).
3. Up to 3 friendly NPCs
4. No more than 10 hostile creatures
5. Include a premade character capable of surviving the module
6. No more than 5 conversations
7. 10-20 minutes playtime.
8. Include 2 to 5 screenshots

Rules:

1. To keep things simple, the judges will review all entries from both GOG and the NWN communities and choose the 4 best modules from each community. From the chosen modules, judges will pick 4 winners while the 5th one will be chosen in a poll on the GOG forums and be awarded the title of "GOG community's favourite module".
2. The Contest ends on November 24th. That is four weeks folks, so get cracking.
3. There will not be a point scoring system that reflects the numerous elements of the module (i.e. plot, conversations, area design etc.). Instead judges will be instructed to choose the module whose overall presentation appeals to them the most.
4. The winning modules will be posted to the vault and become the property of the NWN community. There will also be a special mod spotlight on GOG.com which will highlight the winning modules.

DRM Monster Model Guidelines and Rules:

1. Submit a hak file that contains all the needed files for the monster to appear in the game.
2. The creature should have animations. It is acceptable to take an existing NWN creature and modify it. However, it should not substantially resemble the original creature. It should reflect the personality of this monster: it's DRM'ness
3. The Contest ends on November 24th. That is four weeks from now.
4. The judges will choose the entries that appeal to them the most. No point based system will be used.
5. The winning modules will be posted to the vault and become the property of the NWN community.

Good Old Games - Temple of Elemental Evil Released and Antara for Free

by Skavenhorde, 13:11

They say good things come to those who wait and a good thing is exactly what Good Old Games has just released. It now has in its ever growing library Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil. At its release it was a very flawed gem, but over the years those flaws have been polished down and made into a truly fine gem of a game. You can get it here for $5.99.

I should also mention that GoG now includes Betrayal at Antara for no extra cost if you get Betrayal at Krondor. They're now calling it the Betrayal at Krondor Pack. Antara is not set in the same setting as Krondor and Raymond E. Feist had nothing to do with it, but the combat is similar. The gameplay will feel familiar if you played BAK before it. You can get both games here for $5.99.

Note: Thanks to EvilKoala, ouiyepp and VoxClamant who also sent this tip in.

Good Old Games - Relaunch PR

by Dhruin, 20:58

So, GOG sent us a lengthy official relaunch PR:

GOG.com Officially Launches, Revives Baldur’s Gate and other Classic Hasbro-Licensed PC Games

The definitive resource for DRM-free classic PC games leaves beta with a new site, new features and some of the best games of all time from Hasbro and Atari.

Warsaw, Poland – September 23, 2010. GOG.com (http://www.gog.com) celebrates its second anniversary with one of the biggest announcements ever for fans of classic PC games. After reviving and releasing more than 230 classic PC games and attracting hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers, the DRM-free platform leaves behind its “Beta” status and has officially gone live. GOG is commemorating the milestone with a new site, brand new features and the massive announcement of a deal with Hasbro to breathe new life into some of the most desired titles in PC gaming history, including BioWare’s role-playing opus, Baldur’s Gate: The Original Saga. The titles from Hasbro will be unveiled gradually in the coming weeks, and today's announcement is just a small taste of what’s to come.

Available now for $9.99, Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga (Role-Playing Game, 2000) is the first part of one of the most important franchises from the RPG masters at BioWare and features the core game, as well as the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion. Utilizing the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) ruleset, the game was deemed an instant classic upon release and praised by many as a revival of computer role-playing. Baldur's Gate, set in the Dungeons & Dragons setting of Forgotten Realms, gives players the best from the RPG genre and provides countless hours of great, classic gameplay.

Leaving beta means lots of changes to the site itself, as well. A sleek new design makes it even easier to browse through the huge catalogue, share one’s passion for classic games via popular social media, get to know more about the classic games available and recommend favorite titles to other gamers. Among other changes, the team has introduced GOGmixes, which are, in short, user-created lists of games around one theme.

“We've decided to celebrate our second anniversary in typical GOG fashion: big, loud and with style. Announcing the agreement with Hasbro and launching the new site was a perfect way to finally leave the beta stage,” said Guillaume Rambourg, Managing Director at GOG.com. “We're very excited to see users’ reactions to the new features and we're exceptionally excited to see how they like the Hasbro deal and the incredible games we're releasing in the coming weeks. It's worth waiting for every new release."

Check out four chapters of GOG.com Revival videos on http://youtube.com/gogcom to learn more about the new GOG.com, explanation of the recent events, announcement of Hasbro games and a summary of the service's first two years.

Good Old Games - Will Be Back!!! [Updated]

by Skavenhorde, 17:31

Well it's official! This whole thing was a joke. GoG's homepage has a video with the managing director and co-founder of GoG dressed up as monks and apologizing for their sins. A little funny actually seeing them dressed up as monks apologizing for their prank. They gave some reasons as to why it went wrong like saying that back in the day people could be a little more silly. They also spoke about that they gave plenty of hints in the orginal message and tried in the writing to give everyone a *wink, wink* *Nudge, nudge* "Say no more" "Say no more".

I think if they just gave everyone a heads up that GoG will be down on a certain date AND THEN posted that message a lot of people wouldn't of been so mad, but that's just my opinion.

Personally, I don't care. They're back and even better than ever with Baldur's Gate and it's expansions being released. It's confirmed they will have other RPGs with the D&D license. Is that another hint that Planescape will be coming soon?

The new and improved GoG will launch at 8:00 am EDT with all of it's new additions. So go grab your GoG downloads when they reopen because I know a lot of people were worried about that.

[Update] GameBanshee sends in their notes direct from the press conference:

New features include a mini-catologue divided by gaming genres, a community overview at the bottom of the page with GOGmixes, ratings and discussions, in a quick overview for purchasers. The games catalogue has been overhauled to make searching for games and genres easier.

GOGMixes are the "biggest" new feature: they're a list of titles with recommendations and short descriptions from other users. This is primarily to give an easy overview for users who are interested in certain genres (they use adventures and tactical games as examples), but who don't have a lot of knowledge in that genre.

Good Old Games - Update, Video

Good Old Games - Update, Announcement Wednesday

by Dhruin, 20:57

There's a new statement up at GOG offering an apology and saying they "had to close the service due to business and technical reasons".  A full announcement will come on Wednesday.  It certainly doesn't sound like a PR stunt to me but time will tell:

UPDATE 20.09.2010
First of all, we apologize everyone for the whole situation and closing GOG.com. We do understand the timing for taking down the site caused confusion and many users didn't manage to download all their games. Unfortunately we had to close the service due to business and technical reasons.

At the same time we guarantee that every user who bought any game on GOG.com will be able to download all their games with bonus materials, DRM-free and as many times as they need starting this Thursday.

The official statement from GOG.com's management concerning the ongoing events is planned on Wednesday. If you want to receive further information about GOG.com, please send an email to update_media@gog.com if you're a media representative or to update_users@gog.com if you're a user without a GOG account.

Ironically, Gamasutra posts that NPD says digital sales overtook retail for the first half of 2010.

Good Old Games - Offline, Closed?

by Dhruin, 21:16

As several posters have noted on our forums, GOG.com seems to have suspended operations.  Here's the announcement on the site:

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team

You may note there's nothing definitive and they leave the marketing door open through Facebook and Twitter.  Speaking of Twitter, here's a new tweet:

The official statement from GOG's management about the situation will be announced soon. We'll have more details about this tomorrow.

Marketing gimmick?  Actual closure?  Ending beta?

Good Old Games - Age of Wonders Released

by Dhruin, 21:17

As rumoured, Age of Wonders has been released on GOG with the later games from Triumph Studios to come along soon.  It's been a long time since I dabbled with it but it was a pretty sweet fantasy TBS game, as I recall and worth a look if Elemental has piqued your interest in the genre.

I try to avoid GOG to spare any appearance of a conflict with our advertising but, sometimes, it's worth a post.  GOG is currently serving up six RPG games at 30% discount (or bundle the lot for $23.75).  Head over if you don't own Arx Fatalis, Divine Divinity, Warlords: Battlecry 3, Realms of Arkania 1+2 or Realms of Arkania 3.

Good Old Games - Spring Sale

by Dhruin, 12:52

It's Spring Sale time at GOG and a bunch of good titles are 50% off.  If you don't have Fallout or Divine Divinity or Gothic 2 Gold or others, head over for some silly prices.  I remember paying a bucket load to import Gothic 2 Gold from the UK back in the day.  Ah, the memories.

Good Old Games - Myst Now Available

by Magerette, 18:03

A little off the rpg track, but for those into older games the classic adventure title Myst revamped into the Myst Masterpeice Edition and other Cyan Worlds titles including Riven are now available at GOG.

Here's the description:

Myst Masterpiece Edition is the remastered, higher-quality version of the original Myst - a first-person graphic adventure game. The story puts you in the shoes of "the Stranger", an otherwise unnamed person who arrived in the strange world, or "Age", soon after reading an unusual book called "Myst". The world appears to be deserted, so the Stranger is left with only one thing to do - explore. Here is where the game truly shines - there are a lot of unique locations to visit, each with a hidden secret waiting to be unraveled. It's not just about exploration, though, as there's an enthralling backstory with multiple endings to discover.

And just for our forums administrator Jaz, the old 3rd person shooter,  MDK(Murder Death Kill) is now available there as well.

Good Old Games - Realms of Arkania 3 Now Available

by Skavenhorde, 17:23

Good Old Games adds Realms of Arkania 3: Shadows over Riva to their catalogue completing the Realms of Arkania Trilogy.

Announcement:

Realms of Arknia: Shadows over Riva is a classic RPG game based on a popular German pen-and-paper RPG system The Dark Eye. Once again you take control over a party of heroes to fight evil Orcs and save the people of Aventurien. The third part of the series features an extensive 3D scrolling world which made RPG fans all over the world really excited when the game was released in 1996. To create your band of heroes you can use the detailed statistics system or you can export your party from the prequels! There's no time to waste as the game offers weeks of classic RPG gameplay.
An overview of the game:
Something sinister is happening in the seaside town of Riva. Brave and honoured warriors refuse to fight the horde of Orcs attacking the city. An evil force preys on their minds and souls. Can your small band of heroes defeat it in time?

The object of the game is to unmask the men behind the scenes, to unriddle secrets and to never fall for the enticements and allures of Evil. Only those who see through truth and lies will survive this adventure.

Good Old Games - Realms of Arkania 1 & 2 Now Available

by Magerette, 21:13

Good Old Games adds two more classic rpg's to their catalogue with Realms of Arkania:Blade of Destiny and its sequel ROA2:Star Trail. The third installment, Shadows over Riva is slated for a future release. Price for the two-game bundle is $5.99.

Here's the announcement:

The Realms of Arkania 1+2 pack consists of the games Blade of Destiny and Star Trail. They're both role playing games, based on an actual pen-and-paper RPG system. Similar to the Ishar or Might and Magic series, the games let you lead a party of characters through a 3D environment of towns and dungeons. What makes this game unique among other RPGs are its turn-based combat system, which uses an isometric view and an extensive and detailed statistics system that defines every hero. Both games offer you days of gameplay and, once you finish Blade of Destiny, you can export your party to its sequels. Both games are solid titles in their own right and must-haves for any fan of classic RPG games.

and game overview:

An epic RPG based on the popular German paper & pencil series, "Das Schwarze Auge" (The Dark Eye). Games that draw you in so deeply that the hours slip by like minutes.

The atmospheric old-school feel, interesting game system and character development are fun, but the real strength of this games lies in their cool dungeons, which are chock full of tricks, traps, puzzles, and side events to keep you occupied for a long, long time.

Good Old Games - Interview @ Strategy Informer

by Magerette, 16:35

Strategy Informer talks to  Lukasz Kukawski, Marketing & PR Manager for digital download site Good Old Games about their business model, the new Ubisoft additions to their catalogue, DRM, and how things are going for them so far:

Strategy Informer: What is the underlying ethos behind Good old Games?

Lukasz Kukawski: Good Old Games is a digital distribution platform dedicated to classic PC games. What is different about GOG.com and other services, aside of the games catalogue, is that we offer DRM-free games. This means after you buy a game on GOG.com you can download it as many times as you want, install it on all computers that you own, burn it to CD and play it without having an internet connection. It's like a CD version of the game, but without the CD...

Strategy Informer: What games to consider ‘old’ enough to feature in your catalogue? What’s your cut-off point?

Lukasz Kukawski: As for how old game should be to appear on GOG.com, there's no specific rule for it. Simply saying we release games that aren't new, so don't expect the new Dawn of War or Empire Total War. The shelves in game stores are too short to have all games on them, that's why a game that is 6 months old is sometimes hard to get. We want to offer games that are hard or even impossible to find in retail...

Strategy Informer: What are your thoughts on DRM?

Lukasz Kukawski: We are all gamers at GOG.com and frankly saying we hate DRMs implemented in games. We don't think DRM is the best way to fight piracy. You won't find any copy protection that haven't been broken, so this won't stop pirates from getting the games the illegal way. DRM is more of an obstacle for legitimate buyers than people who pirate games, because if you get the pirated version you'll get it stripped from all forms of copy protection and you can do with the game whatever you want...We think that the best way to fight piracy is to offer good games in a reasonable price with cool additional content.

Good Old Games - Announces Gothic 2 Gold and Spellforce Platinum

by Myrthos, 09:44

Good Old Games and Jowood have signed an agreement where they will add Gothic 2 Gold and Spellforce Platinum in the near future.

JoWood and GOG.com Take Gamers to Hell and Back with Painkiller and More Bloody Good FPS Joins Panzer Elite Special Edition and Other Titles on DRM-Free Classic Games Site

Warsaw, Poland – January 27 – Today GOG.com (http://www.gog.com), the best place for digitally distributed, DRM-free PC classics, announced an agreement with JoWood Productions to bring a number of acclaimed titles to the GOG.com games catalogue, starting with Painkiller Black Edition (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/painkiller) and Panzer Elite Special Edition (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/panzer_elite_se). Both games are available today for $9.99 each – as always, DRM-free and guaranteed to work on Vista and XP. Other JoWood games destined for GOG.com include Gothic 2 Gold, Spellforce Platinum, The Guild Gold and Alien Nation.

Painkiller Black Edition is a perfect fit for GOG.com with its old-
school action-heavy gameplay and top-notch visuals. The critically
acclaimed game pits players against hordes of hellacious beasts, with
little more than weapons of incredible destructive power at their disposal. Panzer Elite Special Edition is perfect for armchair generals and generally anyone who’s always wanted to drive a tank but couldn’t stomach the idea of sitting with a couple of other men in the
tank’s steamy, tight and uncomfortable confines. The game allows players to command a platoon of US or German tanks as they relive some of the most intense tank battles of World War II.

Adding JoWood Productions' games is another exciting step toward
becoming the ultimate place for fans of classic PC games,” said Adam
Oldakowski, Managing Director of GOG.com. “All of these games have
found large fanbases around the world, and we hope that we can show off these great titles to even more people.”

Promoting our games over the GOG.com network is a great opportunity for JoWooD not just to increase sales, but even more to distribute our classic titles to gamers who love to play those “good old games”. As JoWooD has to offer an extensive product line, we are confident that the GOG.com community is a perfect target for our titles", said Georg Klotzberg, Head of Sales of JoWooD Productions.

Painkiller Black Edition (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/painkiller)
and Panzer Elite Special Edition (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/panzer_elite_se) are now available at GOG.com, with the release of other games from JoWood's catalogue planned in the near future. Stay tuned for more news concerning new deals, more new releases and new service features in the upcoming weeks.
