Forum members Jhwisner & Silver submitted links to a new article on Ars Technica where the site posted Steam sales estimates for all 2014 PC games.

Here is more information form Jhwisner.

Ars Technica used data availible publicaly through steam's API to estimate sales, ownership, and playtime for the 400 most popular games on steam for 2014. They did this for 2013 previously and it was pretty interesting.

Some interesting tidbits (these are games released in 2014, numbers are estimated Steam owners and obviously does not include sales on GoG or other distribution systems)

Divinity: Original Sin ~ 802,315

Dark Souls II ~ 964,266

South Park: The Stick of Truth ~ 929,442

Wasteland 2 ~ 384,760

Banner Saga ~ 343,511

Final Fantasy XIII ~ 327,959

Shadowrun Dragonfall Director's edition ~ 313,082

To put this in some perspective, they also found there to be roughly 3 million new Skyrim owners on Steam since 4/14/2014. The good news there is that if you think Bethesda likes money, then they might not be at all disingenous when they said they were putting an increased focus on the PC going forward..
More information.

To put this in another perspective: When I was on the Early Access forums for Might and Magic X, the developers from Limbic Entertainment said the most popular Heroes of Might and Magic (part V) sold around 900,000 copies and that was much higher than the number of what any Might and Magic title (including the old classics) sold. That means that most of the games on the list, being indie games with low development costs, have done very well.

Goat Simulator was the most played Steam release in 2014? Who are these people?

PC gaming, still deader than Elvis.
Beautiful numbers, Dark Souls 2 was probably more profitable on PC than on either console.
Divinity and Wasteland 2 are both wildly profitable.

My colleagues at work. Yeah. I buy Witcher 3 and they buy Goat Simulators.

Of the 20 most owned, I'd never heard of 12 of them and 3 more I know of the franchise, but was not aware of the new iterations. That makes 15 of the 20 I was totally unaware of.

It was most played only in the sense of how many people started up the game.
When it comes to amount of hours people spent playing it, it´s not even in top 20.
The average owner spent only about 6 hours on the game which is not as alarming :).

384.000 seems a bit low for Wasteland 2. I expected it would have been sold nearly 1 million copies.

Wasteland 2 is availible on Steam, GOG.com, Humble Bundle Store, Glyph, and Desura. As non-steam versions are on offer the number could be higher. Also it will be getting a second launch when it comes out on xbox one and ps4 later this year.

It seems that Risen 3 and Bound by Flame didn't do very well with 86k and 62k copies respectively.

Lords of the Fallen didn't sell much as well with only 193k (apparently it sold well on consoles as they announced plans for a sequel).

On the other hand How to Survive did suprisingly well with 700k, the game recieved mixed to negative reviews but the concept seemed not bad (diablo-style zombie game with lite survival elements) so maybe a sequel will be much better.

Games like Blackguards, Transistor and Gauntlet did rather well with 304k, 526k and 360k respectively.

Other notable games:
Van Helsing II - 153k, Legend of Grimrock II - 88k, Dead State - 42k, M&M X:Legacy - 131k, Dogs of War:Online - 105k, Lichdom:Battlemage - 112k, FF XIII-2 - 160k, Warlock 2: The Exiled - 52K, Endless Legend - 360k, Age of Wonders III - 283k and Disciples III: Reincarnation - 73K.
