PC Gamer checked out the open world game Red Dead Redemption 2:

Red Dead Redemption 2 review

The old west feels brand new again.

"Oh Jesus Christ, what have you done?" ThomasChen978 wants to know why a dozen bodies and a couple horse corpses are piled onto the train tracks bordering the early industrial town and New Orleans stand-in St. Denis. "You just murdered half the village."

"No," I reply, "That's us. This is us. These are our bodies."

We're on round two of growing the recursive corpse pile. My posse got the idea to jump in front of the train after a few rounds of Lasso Your Friends And Toss Them Into The Sea with a couple friendly strangers. Red Dead Redemption 2, like GTA 5, has its own bowling minigame, we explain to Chen in a roundabout way, his horror inverting into blissful awareness. Die in Red Dead Redemption 2's shared open world and you'll respawn fast enough to carry your own corpse around.

[...]

Red Dead Redemption 2's stark, slow depiction of America's fading frontier is a monumental work straining against stubborn mission design and stability problems.

Score: 88/100

Non-RPG news? How is RDR2 not an RPG?
Official genre from the developer/publisher calls it an action-adventure game. Then again it can be an RPG according to different personal opinions. Miss the old days I do.:)

Non-RPG news? How is RDR2 not an RPG?

3 MC (capped 8, can be unlocked to 10) and 2 horse attributes (capped 4) you can improve by playing the game is the only proper RPG element that feels artificial and the game would most probably work better without it.

There is some silly crafting, some varieties of weapons, but that still doesn't make the game RPG.

Everything else in the game is not RPG - you hardly have choices in quests (except in wanted dead or alive bounties you can do anything, otherwise will fail if you kill a person wanted alive).

In sidequests you have usually a choice to accept to do them or refuse. That's as far as choices go - there are no consequences for not doing stuff.

There is a morality system which is dumb as fuck, start a fight because you pressed E to mount your horse but there was NPC nearby and the game decided to hit them, rep lost. Loot a person dead for centuries in a wild cat cave, noone ever saw you nor will enter that cane in next 100 years, well screw you, rep goes down -1. Help a street person and your rep goes +1 although noone saw it and in the whole world noone will ever talk to that hermit or whatever society outcast.

Finally there is a crime system where you get a bounty on your head for doing misdeeds. Pay the price yourself and you're clear.

The game is not RPG. It's a blind horse riding sim. That is 90% of the time - boring.
88/100 is a joke of a score for a boredom.

RPG? No. And the game doesnt even pretend to be one. So it should be easy to avoid such mistake. :)

No. Choices are only one rpg element and those text choices games are pretty much just nonlinear novels.

But you've reminded me on a phonegame named Choices which is as almost every other phonegame pay2win rubbish. Sadly because it was formed around not bad visual novels.
Pay2win scams are not videogames.
