I love this! No wonder it remained in my bookmark collection! :D
By using 3D models developers try to solve more interaction between combatants, but it turns out to be way more work than they originally signed up for / hoped: it requires a top-notch animator and a really good programmer to recreate MMA fights in RPGs. The gravity-mass correct physical interaction between bodies, when a monster (big wolf) launches itself at your hero and your hero cannot take the force of the collision and both fall back, slamming heavily on the ground knocked several feet back.

2D pixel art:
Still, good artists, like in Live by the Sword: Tactics, try to emulate very cute "wolf-bite-into-hero"-animations and even put a tiny blood spurt sprite anim between the two combatants to signify a successful wounding bite was made.

I love them for trying! Technically of course its very hard to just SIGNAL that something physically significant as a KNOCKBACK happened..

This is what we are accomplishing in our game, on our visually retro, roguelike-looking battlescape. :D If you have been hit by a monster, you damned WILL see the physical BLUNT FORCE consequence of that attack! :D Hollywood makes great scenes out of this: evil boss kicks our hero and our hero flies back 50 feet like a cannonball and his body slams into a nearby wall. :D
Only "in roguelike 2D", in our case.

One of the great things about old Helherron was your Troll slamming an enemy into a wall and leaving a blood splatter. :D
