Baldur's Gate 3 - Patch 8

After the last patch I will probably replay and try to finish it this time.
Made it to Bladurs gate in my longest playthrough, but I wasnt very happy with my character somehow.
Together with shallow character development I somehow wasnt able to keep going.
Have to choose better next time, maybe some of new subclasses will help with that.

I just saw that the game has now 98% positive reviews on Steam. It has now over 600k lifetime reviews at the time of this post. That's even though the game has selectable pronouns and voices that don't match traditional 20th-century genders, girls with dicks, bestiality, definitely straight male players allegedly being sexually assaulted by gay Gale and whatnot.

The absurdity of the level of success that this game is having is just difficult to grasp and very likely impossible to recreate for a CRPG. I'm not going to say anything about what RPG is the best or not because it's a meme and in the end it's down to personal preferences, but I think it's fair to say these guys made an okay game and the world could use if more games like this were made.

98% is just the recent reviews, overall is still 96%. Not that 96% isn't pretty insanely good.

And yeah it's gonna be hard to re-capture this success, even for Larian, I suspect. BG3 could be the RPG benchmark for the next decade or two or more.

That's a nice list that confirms my suspicions, BG3 is by far the best-rated RPG of all time, which seems relevant in a site called RPGWatch.

Interestingly, the only other CRPG I can see in the list (which seems to stop at 248 entries) is Divinity Original Sin 2 at #197. I honestly thought the Pathfinder games would be somewhere around there, or maybe more actiony great RPGs like Elden Ring, but I guess despite Larian's best efforts, we still are a niche genre.

Hopefully the next game doesn't take six or more years to release.

As we all know it'll be in Early Access for at least two years.

Yeah here's hoping as I'm not getting any younger.🧓

As you get older you realize you won't be playing many more games.

Damn now I feel like the Skyrim Grandma. :rotfl:

BG3 is also #4 in the Steam top sellers list right now, but 2 of the things ahead of it are hardware (Steam Deck) and free (CS2). So really it's the #2 best selling game on Steam right now, behind only the latest installment of Call of Duty that came out a month ago. You have to go down to the #25 position, before you come across the next full game that (1) came out over a year ago, and (2) isn't on a >50% sale.

Maybe but least they aren't nickle and dimeing buyers like other developers would.

Imagine just $1.99 for each sub-class.💲💸🤑

There are a bunch of mods you can download that add more as well.

Not even a far-fetched concept, many studios do this and their fans claim that it's fair and worth it.

Regarding BG3 I don't know, it's free high-quality content, they can call if what they want, it's a good thing in 100% of the cases.

Not too shabby. BG3 is ranked in the top 50 rated games (47th), so only 46 games rated better. ;)

That is such a weird list. South Park is doing better than Elden Ring.. ?

Edit: In fact, it's only 0,17% behind BG3. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoyed The Stick of Truth a lot, but wow.

Some of those are a bit of a Disco Elysium phenomenom, ie, not many people actually played them but the few who did loved it, and nobody has any beef with the game or the studio to just negatively review it out of spite. Others are fanservice or just silly fun games to play with friends.

I do feel I'm missing out on a lot of fun by confining myself mostly to RPGs. There are cases where I'm just not the target audience, but others are probably worth trying.

I think it has a lot to do with expectations and/or the price of the game. If you have a mediocre game that you paid 10€ for and didn't expect much, you're more likely to give it a thumbs up than for a game that you paid 60€ for and expected GOTY material.
