The machines in Matrix were dumb as fuck. Any actual AI will have access to basic knowledge of thermodynamics, so they would know that if you want to draw energy from a source, you lose a significant amount of the energy every time that energy has to be converted and processed through another medium. If the machines needed sustainable energy, feeding humans to power their brains so their brains could produce a few kilowats that then they could use to power themselves, it would be one of the least efficient approaches to gaining gain sustainable energy, as most of the energy is lost out to maintain other bodily functions, heat or simply dissipates due to the laws of entropy.

Whatever they were feeding the humans, they should just have processed it into energy straight away, or if they couldn't figure that out (wierd, we can figure that out, maybe the machines were truly dumb) they could use simpler lifeforms that have much more efficient energy conversion rates and are easily harvestable, while not prone to uprisings or revolutions, such as potatoes. That's not even taking into account the processing power necessary to maintain the Matrix itself.

Nice movie though!

That depends what source of energy you have at your disposal. The human body is quite efficient at transforming food into ATP, but the question remains whether it's efficient enough to transform that into heat plus keeping the necessary for the functioning of the body, given the alternatives (if there are any - I don't think simply burning the food is sustainable).

But it doesn't matter. It's fiction; the fictional AI is based on facts that are true in that fiction, not on what we believe to be true in our reality. If there's a flaw, it's in the setting.

Anyway, that's quite OOT.
