I talk about how I handle error handling in the code of my games.

I talk about events that happen that frustrate and slow down programmers of all kinds, not just game development programmers. Some of these code issues explain why crunch happens...and they are not the programmers' fault.

I am talking about crunch again, this time about lessons learned during a software engineering class back in college.

I watched a great video about career advice from Adam Savage (of MythBusters fame), and I realized a lot of it applied to my own career in game development, and probably yours too.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly a decade since Fallout 4 came out, and even harder to believe that it’s probably going to be about as long before Fallout releases.

From Morrowind to Oblivion to Skyrim and more, Bethesda Game Studios has delivered a number of standout, genre-defining open world RPGs over the years, but the one (or one of the ones) that the masses have
collectively turned their attention to right now is 2008’s Fallout 3.

It’s been 13 years since Skyrim came out, and by the time The Elder Scrolls 6 launches, it’ll probably be well over a decade and a half. Fallout 4, meanwhile, is already nearly a decade old, and we’re likely still at least another decade away from Fallout 5.

Join us as we look back on Fallout 4's history - the good, the bad and the ugly - and why it sowed so much discord among franchise fans.

With Bethesda currently having its hands full with The Elder Scrolls 6 and post-launch work on Starfield, it will obviously be many, many years before we get to see the next mainline instalment in the Fallout franchise, but with all the ongoing Fallout excitement brought about by Amazon Prime’s recently released series, we’ve caught ourselves wondering where we would like to see Fallout 5 take place. Here, that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about.

Of Fallout’s narrative high notes, the peak is arguably Fallout: New Vegas, the much-loved installment set in post-apocalyptic Vegas and crafted by Obsidian Entertainment, members of which have shepherded the Fallout aesthetic all the way from the Wasteland games to the Outer Worlds. And although Obsidian were fated never to helm another mainline Fallout game, they did get to revisit the universe four times before being ripped away by cruel reality. It’s those four twists on the formula, those four adventures into the unknown, that we’re here to celebrate today. At the height of their storytelling powers, Obsidian gave us some of the best sci-fi in games with the four Fallout: New Vegas add-ons: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road. Each veered sharply away from the standard Fallout formula in its own different direction, while simultaneously painting in the secret overstory of the New Vegas universe and the player character, the Courier.

When first announced several years ago, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes sounded like a dream project.

Initial trailers looked solid, and the reveals of its many unique heroes were compelling. Now that I've finally gotten my hands on it, Rabbit and Bear Studios' first title is an epic through and through, telling the tale of an extensive war with all kinds of characters and intrigue.

Though it starts in a typical fashion, the plot encompasses the journeys of three protagonists - Nowa, Seign and Marisa - as they gather allies against the Galdean Empire. The premise is strong, backed by a capable aesthetic and music, and it's enough to weather some of the issues with combat, quest design and enemy difficulty.

"I'm happy to see Sand Land get a second wind with an open-world action game, and it can sometimes adapt the series in impressive ways. But while there is the potential of an interesting expansion of the manga here, it doesn’t manage to replicate what Toriyama's panels were able to illustrate so effectively. Beneath some ho-hum dialogue and stilted cutscenes is a fun story with its heart in the right place, and Beelzebub and friends at least have the charisma to carry you through to the end alongside a quirky set of supporting characters and villains. Dialing in on vehicular combat and exploration pays off to both maintain the spirit of the original work and deliver some high points, but the quests themselves fall into repetition. Thus, Sand Land suffers the same fate we’ve seen in many other game adaptations of anime and manga – competent in several respects with a few moments of brilliance, but for the most part, a simply okay adventure that can only occasionally capture what makes the source material special."
