TCR Talks with Josh Sawyer

Josh Sawyer is the legendary game designer behind famous titles such as Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. But besides all that, he is someone who is incredibly generous with his knowledge and often shares game development tips, advice and references. Josh is also a big proponent of the games as culture discourse - it's this theme that we wish to mostly pick his brain on. Join us! The session will last 1 hour, feel free to leave your questions in the chat!
ATOM RPG: Trudograd Review - Gamebanshee
ATOM RPG: Trudograd makes a good case for looking at the forest instead of the individual trees. While some of the game's quests, characters, and lines of dialogue leave a lot to be desired, they exist side by side with great ideas, RPG mechanics, and yes, other quests that are much better.

And if you manage to not fixate on the game's shortcomings, you will more than likely be able to get lost in its weird, unique, and very much intriguing world with plenty of stories to tell. And so, in the end, I can't help but recommend the game to anyone in the mood for some Fallout-inspired adventures.
Is Square Enix Bringing Back a Classic Final Fantasy Game? - Comicbook
At the moment of publishing, neither Eidos Montreal nor its parent company Square Enix have addressed the survey and the speculation it has created. We don't expect this to change for a variety of reasons, but if it does, we will update the story accordingly.

For those that don't know: Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical role-playing game released back in 1997 via the PS1. The first game of the Tactics series within the Final Fantasy franchise, it's a cult classic and widely held as one of the best strategy games of all time.
Dragon Age 4 Reveals New 'Spooky' Concept Art - Gamerant
This “spooky” Dragon Age 4 concept art has two major components to it. On the far left, fans get to see genuine Undead, not Darkspawn. Undead featuring in Dragon Age 4 ought to come as no surprise, given they’ve appeared in the franchise numerous times before, and Necromancy is common in Tevinter Magic and the like. This doesn’t guarantee Undead are in the game or exactly look like this, of course, but it is an interesting depiction of them.
Broken Roads Preview "A Brilliant Callback To Classic Fallout" - TheGamer
The black void wraps its indistinguishable tendrils around you, coddling you in an abyss of morality. A glimmer of colour appears. It’s a wheel with various ideologies marking the slices. You’re asked how you would handle a caravan lost on the road and whether you’d ditch your friends to survive - you’re asked deeply personal hypotheticals that are abhorrent to think about but getting through this quiz washes away the endless depths to reveal a picturesque yet barren Australia, reeling from whatever unleashed its dystopia. You’ve decided who you are. This is Broken Roads.
The Complexity Of Making An RPG That's Authentically Australian - Kotaku
When was the last time you actually saw an Australian city replicated in a video game? Not something in the background, but a 2D or 3D space that you could walk around and interact with, one that actually mirrored the spirit of down under?

The Complexity Of Making An RPG That's Authentically Australian - Kotaku

I like that. There is still too much emphasis on games coming from the northern "western" hemisphere - and from Japan.

Darkest Dungeon 2's Biggest Changes

We're highlighting the most exciting and biggest changes coming to Darkest Dungeon 2 on this episode of New Gameplay Today! Join Tack, Jill, and Stadnik as they discuss why this gorgeous indie is worth playing when it releases in early access!
Darkest Dungeon 2 Early Access Interview - Epic Games
Darkest Dungeon II, which hits the Epic Game Store today in Early Access, appears, in some ways, to be a tonic to that brooding original title. The world is still spinning dizzily to its end, but the journey has players moving toward the light rather than away from it.

In this wide-ranging interview, we chatted with Red Hook Studios creative director Chris Bourassa and design director Tyler Sigman about the original game's inception, how early access will shape this sequel, and why the duo say this game is more like a family road trip than the original game;s brutal hockey game.

Expeditions: Rome - DevDiary #9 Playstyle Variety
Ave, and welcome to our ninth DevDiary. If you were expecting something spooky, you’re in the wrong place: Ancient Rome obviously did not observe All Hallows Eve. Come back on December 17 for the Saturnalia.

Lately our DevDiaries have been delving into very concrete and specific game systems, with diaries discussing character progression and the specifics of the crafting mechanics. Today we’re going to take a step back from all that and look at a more high-level aspect of our game design: how we strive to support multiple play styles.

Different play styles have always been an important part of our game design philosophy, and we consider it one of the most important aspects of roleplaying games – after all, roleplaying shouldn’t just be a matter of what you say, but also what you do. Play styles is a broad topic, and in this DevDiary we will touch on the way roleplaying choices affect the story; we’ll examine how quests can be approached in various ways; and we’ll even look at how difficulty settings change the player experience.

Open-world action RPG Honor of Kings: World Announced

Publisher Tencent Games and developer TiMi Studio Group have announced Honor of Kings: World, an open-world action RPG based on the hit mobile game Honor of Kings, planned for a worldwide release on multiple platforms. A release date was not announced.
Bloodborne's PS1 Demake is Real - Polygon

Tencent Invests $264 Million in From Software Parent Company Kadokawa
Tencent has bought a 6.86% stake in Kadokawa, Japanese publishing giant and parent company of From Software. It is the biggest game-related deal in the country for the Chinese tech giant.

Kadokawa announced the deal worth ¥30 billion ($264 million) on October 29. Tencent will buy 4.86 million shares, with the deal expected to be closed between November 12 and 26.

It will let the Chinese company strengthen its position in the Japanese market, as the domestic games industry still faces scrutiny from regulators and the government. Tencent and Kadokawa will form a capital and business alliance, investing in animation titles and their game adaptations. The partnership will also allow the Japanese company to further expand its IPs across the globe, including China.
Weird West is The Messy Kind of Immersive Sim Deathloop Isn't - PCGamer
Whether you run into a pack of bandits or a pack of traveling merchants on your journey across the shrouded map, both will rob you of something. And that’s why Weird West works, at least in the early hours I previewed. Despite having considerable influence over the scenarios you can find yourself in, the world repeatedly reminds you that you're insignificant, that there's much more going on than what you can see, and that to make it through, you'll need a bit of luck. Even your own character seems to be not of this plane, marked with a sign that asks a larger question you'll hopefully answer as you return to the same world via the four other characters. Weird West promises that decisions and relationships you make as one character will ripple out to the next.

In contrast, Deathloop wasn't my kind of immersive sim. The time loop premise means that nothing lasts, and repeatedly going through the same levels until I'd squeezed them of their spontaneity felt antithetical to the genre's strengths. "Play your own way" only works if you're pressured to do so.

Weird West reassured me that the immersive sim is still playful, still sharp, and open for interpretation by developers who want to push it further. If what I played is close to what the final game will be in early 2022, I'll be thrilled to step into its clockwork world and make some mistakes.

Weird West Small Preview Roundup

IGN
Frankly, the only notable concern I have about Weird West is its optimization before its January 11 release date. The gunplay is visceral, but the controls could be a little tighter. A number of my firefights devolved into both sides circle-strafing around each other, waiting for someone's health to drop to zero, which doesn't encapsulate the high-minded tactical flair that Wolfeye is going for. I also experienced one hard-crash to desktop, and a hilarious bug in which a cowboy devolved into a horrible polygonal monstrosity after I knocked him out. Those issues will likely be ironed out when Weird West is in the public's hands, and if Wolfeye pulls it off, players might finally have the occult, grimdark western we've all been waiting for.
Game Informer
The only aspect of Weird West I found slightly lacking was the narrative. Admittedly, I only played a very small portion of the game, so things could change when the full story is open to me. However, right now, the bounty-hunter-coming-out-of-retirement storyline was the blandest part of my time with Weird West. That's not to say the actual dialogue in-game was rough I quite enjoyed that, and I liked the side quests presented to me as well. I just wish the overarching narrative was as captivating early on as the rest of the game.
ScreenRant
Obviously there are a few teething issues with the preview build. Control with a mouse and keyboard feels a little squirrelly at times, with moments of awkward and unresponsive player character movement mixed with over-sensitive aiming. Ally AI is frustrating at the moment, too, as the player's supporting cast may charge head-first into a wave of enemies or not start shooting at all. However, these are issues that will no doubt be addressed before the final version of the game is available.
GameSpew
Chances are Weird West won’t have the same level of polish applied to it as a bigger-budget release from Arkane, but it’s obvious that it has just as much love, if not more. It also appears to be deeper and more daring. After playing it for just a handful of hours, it’s clear that this is a game that’s going to have a lot of fans. Ultimately though, the true value of Weird West will only be revealed when we’ve been able to go hands-on with its other four protagonist, and witness the full story that unfolds. Or our story, at least.

PC Release Dates for Final Fantasy XVI, IX Remake, and Tactics Remaster?
The Nvidia GeForce leak saga may not be over just yet, as a new repository reveals alleged release dates for hundreds of games. Among those titles are Square Enix projects, dating Final Fantasy XVI and unannounced games like a Final Fantasy IX remake and Tactics remaster.

Back in September, a GeForce Now database leak revealed thousands of titles listed for the service but not yet available. Among those leaks were major triple-A games, some public knowledge and others completely unannounced. The list contained a mix of projects that went on to be confirmed—like God of War (2018) for PC and the GTA remasters—and some that seemed a little too good to be true. In a statement to The Verge, Nvidia called the list “speculative” and said it was to be “used only for internal tracking and testing.” So the first list is real, but Nvidia denies it’s a confirmation for anything.

Josh Sawyer's New game is Rumored to be a Disco-Elysium Clone? - GamePolar
Per Grubb, Josh Sawyer’s subsequent recreation, codenamed Venture Missouri, is extra of an experimental undertaking being labored on with a comparatively small staff. It appears Sawyer could also be taking some notes from Disco Elysium, as the brand new undertaking is claimed to be a homicide thriller RPG, with a deal with character constructing and interactions and participant selection. In actual fact, the sport possible received’t have any fight in any respect. The sport’s setting positively diverges from Disco Elysium although, because it’s stated to happen in sixteenth century Europe.

BioWare on 10 years of Star Wars stories in The Old Republic
As you'd expect from BioWare, storytelling is a big part of the experience. It's possible to play TOR as a single-player Star Wars RPG, and the tales it tells are hugely entertaining, whether you're a Sith lord, a Jedi, a smuggler, or a bounty hunter. BioWare has been telling stories in this game for a decade now, so I sat down with creative director Charles Boyd to talk about the studio's approach to this aspect of the game, how it's changed over the years, and getting to play in such a beloved universe.
BioWare's Jade Empire 2 Would've Followed On From The Bad Ending
In a new 25-minute video, Mark Darrah, who worked at the studio for 24 years, shared an in-depth look at Jade Empire 2's rather complicated fate. Darrah said the studio initially planned a direct sequel to their Far-East action RPG, which would take place several decades later. But when the devs shifted to Unreal Engine to merge development tools for the following projects (like Mass Effect), some changes followed. Specifically, the team decided to bring Jade Empire into a modern setting, skipping hundreds of years of the world's history.
Avowed Deep Into Pre-Production, Draws The Outer Worlds Comparisons
Obsidian Entertainment's RPG set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Avowed, first made its cinematic trailer debut over a year ago. The Microsoft-owned studio is apparently making progress on its Xbox exclusive title, and a new report from Windows Central suggests Avowed is "deep into pre-production," and highlights some of its similarities with Obsidian's other RPG hit, The Outer Worlds.
Xenonauts 2 - October Update
The big news this month has been the release of Closed Beta V22, which is a fairly significant upgrade on previous builds. This is currently only on our Experimental branch but it should be making its way to the main / default Steam and GOG branches in a week or two when it has had a bit more testing. We've done three hotfixes for this build since it was first released and there is a fourth due out shortly that should iron out the most serious remaining bugs we're aware of.

Elden Ring 10 Biggest Key Gameplay Takeaways

Elden Ring Gameplay was shown publicly for the first time yesterday by Bandai Namco, and with it, many new features and secrets have come to light that wasn't previously known. For instance, we got to see Pot Boy for the very first time, and it was absolutely fantastic. However, there are many more things that may have gone unnoticed by those who have not seen gameplay previously. In this article, I want to cover what these are from the perspective of someone who saw a completely different demo a couple of months ago.
Elden Ring vs. Dark Souls - 10 BIGGEST DIFFERENCES You Need To Know

New gameplay footage has been showcased for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, providing an extensive look at the game's mechanics, combat and exploration. There was quite a bit to see, both in terms of things that we're seeing action for the first time and brand-new details.
Alder Forge - Devlog #2
After the environment design the second most time consuming process is of course the character design, you will find that this process is somehow similar in matter of pre production but completely changes the moment the character is skinned/rigged and in Game ready.

In my production process I have split the importance and type of all the characters into three groups:

  • 1- Important characters, Main Cast and Bosses
  • 2- Mob and Mini Bosses
  • 3- NPCs, pets and other creatures.
