DS1 is one of my all time favorites, actually replaying it right now. The 2nd was good, but not as good imo. The fastet combat has me waiting on getting the 3rd one right now.

Any opinions on that?

I'll probably wait for the GotY edition.

The Dark Souls board game is currently on Kickstarter. It looks incredible. I'm backing it for the miniatures alone.

I really like the "Souls" series but I'm sooooooo bad at the combat. Watching me play is to watch a comedy of errors. After 4 games in the series I still can't time parries.

If the game interests you, don't give up. Try starting with a knight or warrior and see if that helps you pass boss 1. DS3 is a good game but not without criticism. DS3 has a wierd difficulty curve. It's not even a curve really... More like sphagetti. The beginning few "zones" are quite tough while the mid section has these dips where things seem comparatively easier.

The Witcher games are about as far as I can go with this sort of fast combat.

The Souls games are definitely tough compared to most other games. Not everybody is trained for really fast reflexes, and there's no shame in avoiding these types of games if you don't enjoy them.

As for me...I was raised on the arcade/NES/SNES classics that were totally brutal. Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Golden Axe, and so on. I'm Soul Level 260 in Dark Souls III, having run through it seven times now. So yeah, it's a fun game. :)

But I'm glad the series is over, hopefully. Dark Souls III is just a best-of from the prior games. It also has the weakest lore and endings of all the Souls games...so if you don't enjoy the combat, there's pretty much no reason to play.

Dark Souls games has always been about patience. Watch and learn patterns , and then attack only when opportunity arises. First boss can be defeated even without using any dodge rolls nor shield, only with timing your steps. But it is tough. I think the easiest way is to use shield and dodges, attack after boss misses you, and watch your stamina bar - don't attack if you are low on stamina cause you won't have any left for next roll or block. When he changes in phase two, attack from behind and you'll be safe.

This is my first souls game and it took me nearly 20+ times to kill the first boss so I am not sure if I am the right person to comment but I will tell you what I did. The boss has 2 phases,

Phase 1 - I run/sprint away from the boss keeping an eye on my stamina. Whenever he does that leap and jump attack, I run straight to him and hit him 1 or 2 times max and then sprint away from him as fast as possible. I don't do more than 2 hits since I will be out of stamina to sprint away. Repeat this till phase 2.

Phase 2 - Around 50% hp mark, he turns into that "pus of man" thing. The trick here is to anticipate this and run straight to him when he is doing this and get 2 or 3 free hits. Then the trick is to stay right on top him and keep on hitting him. If you can get the free hits, he will die soon in phase 2.

PS I am playing Knight.

I think the "sphagetti" is due to the RPG aspect of the souls game. I put all my points into strength and quickly upgraded my sword to +4 or +5 and bam the middle zones were easy since mobs which used to take 5 hits to die now die in 2 or 3. This means that I can spam my broadsword even before the my stamina bar depletes. Also I find that the broadsword or even any straight swords are overpower compared to any weapons. Once you gets your weapon animation going, mobs can't really interrupt me. Running out of stamina is the only thing that can stop me.

I am at the 80% mark now and using Dark Sword +9 with heavy infusion and I can kill the knights in Lothric castle (end zone version) in 2 or 3 hits. Once your weapon is fully upgraded I think you are kill most mobs in 2 or 3 hits. Only mini boss type of mobs give you any trouble.

Despite what people say about reflex, dodge, parry etc, you don't actually have to do any of them. For bosses yes, but certainly not for regular mobs. The "RPG" aspect of souls games helps a lot to people like me who has sod all reflex! However if you can do them then you are walking death machine!

From another thread,

Dark Souls III sells 3 million, series at 13 million

http://www.gamereactor.eu/news/41355…at+13+million/

According to steam spy, PC owners for DS3 is 857,012 ± 22,509. Nearly 1/3 coming from PC sales! I would guess lot more sales on PS4 than Xbox one so really PC > Xbox One!

other souls games on steam

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition - 2,441,639 ± 37,894
DARK SOULS II - 1,046,994 ± 24,872
DARK SOULS II: Scholar of the First Sin - 659,730 ± 19,756
DARK SOULS III - 857,012 ± 22,509

Total darks souls on PC is 5,005,375 so thats 40% of all souls games are sold on PC.

DS3 is good port but they can still do lot more to improve it for PC given the sales numbers.

To motivate you further, you will find that the second boss is LOT easier than the first. All you have to do is to stay behind his back all the time and hit him :)

The first time you fight him you can hack away at him after you pull the sword out while he is standing up. This only works the first time you fight him so if your really having problems it may be worth starting over if you die. This should hold take out about a quarter of his health. If you take black fire bombs as a gift you can then hit him with those right after dodging his attacks. Doing this right will have him down past 50% in about 30 seconds and without you taking any hits.

You can also get in a number of attacks while he transforms. Which should put you at full health with all your estus and him at about a quarter health. Stay close at this point, circle strafing with your shield up. Drop it only if you need stamina. Stay behind him roll when he attacks or jumps and take a couple swipes right after. Shouldn't take long to kill him at that point.

This is very good point. You will get lots of free hits there as well.

If you are on PC, you can just save the game before you pull the sword out of him and copy the save file to some where else. So if you die, you don't need to start over just but copy the save file and you will be just in front of him like nothing happened! This is what I do for most bosses. I will save the game in front of them to avoid running back from the bonfire! At one point I was stupid enough to carry about 60k souls on me and died to boss. I revived at the bonfire and ran though the mobs rather than kill them and got killed and lost 60k souls :(

If you take black fire bombs as a gift you can then hit him with those right after dodging his attacks. Doing this right will have him down past 50% in about 30 seconds and without you taking any hits.

For the life of me, I still don't know how to aim the fire bombs "free style" even after 80+ hours! Only way I can aim is to use the longbow to aim then press "R" to release the fire bomb and I can't do this in proper boss fight.

This describes my overall build strategy. I do everything I can to make fights go faster. Because for me, the ultimate dodge-at-the-wrong-time-hit-at-the-wrong-time king, the longer a fight drags on, the more likely I'm gonna get whooped.

As far as I know you don't free aim bombs you just lock on to throw them, at least that's how I've always done it.
