Dark Souls III - Why is it being made?

GamesRadar ask themselves the question why Dark Souls 3 is being made. In their opinion the series felt completed with the second installation of it, so they wonder what Dark Souls 3 brings to the table. While playing a two hour session of the game, the author tries to find the answer to that.

I begin to understand the direction Dark Souls 3 is going in as soon as I push the stick forward. I experience a speed and fluidity of movement that all of my experience tells me the mid-weight character I'm using just should not have. It's a revelation compounded when I make my first evasive roll, the movement manifesting not as the expected metallic tumble, but launching with immediate momentum, horizontality taking priority over gravity for the first time in any situation involving moderately hefty armour.
Thanks Eye.

You might as well pose the same question on a number of other things. Why have another piece of chocolate cake when you've already experienced it before. Why play another game of chess when you've already played it before. Why watch Star Wars VII when you've already seen all the others. Why come here to post at RPGWatch when you've already done it before.

The simple and obvious answers as it relates to DS3 is that From Software has a great brand and they can make money off this series. From a creative standpoint, the developers appear to still be interested in continuing this series. From a players' standpoint, it appears gamers still find it a fun type of gameplay. The simple answer is that the marketplace appears to indicate that Dark Souls gameplay continues to be entertaining for many gamers.

Ack. It's getting made because it's a great idea and a great setting.

I am a little DS fatigued, it does see a bit soon. I am definitely NOT excited about the faster combat. DS2 may be the end of the line for me, but it was a good run.

This question can't be taken seriously can it?

If a game sells they will make more, or is that a trick question as in I don't like the game so why are they not making games I like?

I think the MadGamer answered the question very logically and sensibly.

A more interesting, connecting question for me in the light of From's financial success earned from the franchise is probably "For who is this being made?" The influence of Bloodborne's speed in the combat is a little disconcerting for me as I don't want to see the series lose the more cerebral plodding approach that the first game offers in favor of encouraging a more straight up quasi-button mashing reflex based "if you're not fast enough you die" kind of hack and slash.

This is more of a mild concern than an actual perception of what is thankfully at this stage, but still, I do enjoy the series very much and look forward to extrapolating more information as news comes out.

Themadgamer nailed it IMO.

There's still interest in the series from the developer and the fans. The same reason there's the witcher 3, mass effect 3, Diablo 3, etc.

Did any of you play From Software's other big (though lesser known) franchise, King's Field? I loved that series. It wasn't perfect, but those games were a lot of fun. My biggest criticism with that series is that the combat was way too stiff and slow - which is something they seemed to 'fix' with the Souls series. Though in doing so, they lost (imho) some of the exploration that the King's Field series was known for. However, comparing King's Field 1, 2, or 3 (U.S. Versions) to Dark Souls 1 makes DS1's combat seem insanely quick and fluid.

Why does a farmer milk his cows?

It is not the farmer that milks the cow...it is the cow that milks the farmer (free food, rent...). But the farmer is too stupid to realize it.

I used to love those games back in the PS1 days. I think King's Field was the first true 3D RPG I played, and the soundtrack was fantastic.

You're not kidding about them being slow though, and it wasn't just the combat. I believe the two PS1 titles released over here had a framerate of 15 fps, but they got even slower when multiple enemies were onscreen.

The really clever farmer might work out a way to set the cows free and look like a hero knowing they'll wander around with no money and come back willing to work for a fraction of their lodging costs.

They tried that with communism already. The cows, eventually, killed the farmer.
A sad tale...except for the cows. :p

Yep. It took a lot of patience to get through those games. I played all the U.S. releases of that series though. I really loved the exploration and discovery aspect of the games. I still remember being impressed by the night sky in KF1.
