DOOM: The Dark Ages

Right, I forgot about the slight outrage that Indiana Jones doesn't run without an RT card. But that's weird since the console versions, I expect do run with RT? Anyway ...
Yeah, but the console version is only 1080p upscaled and 60fps. I assume some of the effects are probably toned down as well.

Apparently DOOM now has adjustable sliders for a lot of particular difficulty settings. I don't think I like this. While it might sound cool, and you could technically already do this via mods, this kinda relinquishes any solid vision that the developers want from their players to master.
And especially in a high skill game like DOOM, how would one feel to know they fiddled with pretty much anything. At that point I'm more-so playing my own game.

I guess technically the difficulty levels they already had are just presets for the various other settings? And now they're just exposing those as well.
But it really doesn't look good imo. Feels a bit icky. You might even say these are what older games would call cheats, but directly in the game.

It's just another step towards more accessibility. I don't like it, but this is something that can be easily ignored.

I'll choose the same difficulty that I played Doom and Doom Eternal on, and I won't touch any modifiers unless it feels too easy compared to those games.

So Nightmare's just gonna be the bars cranked all the way up or down now? Will we get a new highest difficulty??? Cool.

I've Ultra-Nightmare'd DOOM Eternal, plan on doing the same (or something similar) for all the DOOM games. Probably the game I've overall been 2nd most excited for (currently the most, since Citizen Sleeper 2's already out. Death Stranding's 2nd place now).

It's a shame I won't be able to buy this game anywhere near launch. Will probably end up getting gamepass just to play this one and buy it later down the road. XBOX and idSoft have priced the game over here in such a confusing way that I'm not quite sure what to think about any other future XBOX releases. It's a full 70 USD (Even the new COD was like, 67 USD (which in itself is like, ?????)) and there is no way I'm paying that much for a single game. Like, are they trying to make people get gamepass instead of buy games?

At least they addressed it. I’m fine with it.
Also kind of funny. the woke ages :)))
This is definitely the way to disarm controvercy. Hugo is very charming.

Also, what's interesting, he confirms that each preset difficulty level has a certain combination of sliders.
I never knew that Nightmare or Ultra Nightmare had an increase in overall speed. And I don't think they did, in previous DOOMs at least.
So maybe this is something new, maybe that's something separate, on top, that you can increase.

I don't think I've heard anything about the Nightmare diffs literally being faster, even in Eternal. Though my normal diff. and nightmare/ultra-nightmare playthroughs were years apart so I can't definitively say that that isn't the case. It feels that way for sure though, due to how more much more aggressive the enemies are at nightmare.

Also, yep, anyone who thinks sliders will make the game too easy is someone who either cares too much about what other people want to do with their games on their own time, or is ignoring the fact that the slider can move 2 ways from the middle on purpose, whether that's a form of self-admitting that they'll make it easy, or just being "ignorant" on purpose, 🤷.

I wonder if the nightmare preset will still have some headroom in terms of enemy aggression. Seriously cannot wait to crank that shit all the way up :]

Lawrence's opinion is interesting, since he's a pretty hardcore doom dude. He regularly plays them on nightmare and even had the patience for ultra-nightmare in either 2016 or Eternal.
And he says Dark Ages is noticeably slower. You do notice it's much more horizontal, and you're rarely off the ground, compared to Eternal especially.

It'll be interesting how they ramp up difficulty.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sold on this yet. I'll get it regardless because id Software has never really disappointed me, but I don't like the lack of verticality or the bullet hell type projectiles.

Okay, the game looks awesome based on all the preview videos I've seen. I don't think I'll like it more than I like Eternal, but I'll probably like it more than 2016.

I can respect idSoft not settling on the same genre tho. For all intents and purposes, DOOM 2016's a pretty normal Arena-Shooter FPS (just polished to hell and back :] ), Eternal's a resource management sim, and hey, if this is gonna be a bullet hell, I'm all for it, love those anyways. Hoping this is another success for them
goddamnit though XBOX just go back to having regional pricing on games you publish.

Anyone playing yet? Impressions?

User-reviews are mostly positive so far, but I've seen a few people say it's easier and simplified compared to the last two games.

That's the general impression across all fans that I've seen. Everyone is saying it's significantly easier. A lot of people are playing on Nightmare, the highest difficulty, something that's nigh-on impossible for most players in Eternal or 2016.
You also don't have to switch weapons at all. You can pretty much main just one you like. I don't have that much of an issue with that on principle, but it seems considerably worse than even in 2016.
And a lot of people are saying the parry mechanic is getting repetitive fast, since it's the only explicit mechanic you pretty much do against all enemies.

It sounds like a good shooter compared to most other fps games, but definitely the worst of the recent Doom games.

From what I've seen, there are WAY too many cutscenes for a Doom game. I want action, not storytime. Also, the death animations look downright Disney - things just popping apart into Lego bits?

Color me not impressed.
