Elex 2 Elex 2 Discussion

Started over this weekend and begun my "real" playthrough.

It definitely gets better after those first couple of hours. That classic PB exploration is still there.

My only complaints right now are that there's too much free loot and that most of the learnable abilities seem really basic and boring. That's just my opinion from looking at the skill trees, as I haven't actually learned anything yet other than blacksmithing.

Combat seems irrelevant now I have Rain of Fire. I guess running out of mana could be an issue but it is very OP. I took out a cyclops and about 3 other monsters with one cast and just ran around during the strike.

Yeah, it's incredibly strong. I play mainly as a melee character right now, but with Rain of Fire ready to take out either big packs or particularly tough enemies.

Finished it as cleric.
Alb magic is bullshit. Their heal is nifty but for bulletsponge bosses you still need a bunch strongest pots.
And there are bulletsponges everywhere, many not melee friendly so you will need to buy bullets constantly. Luckily you will steal, lockpick and hack everything so the cash is not a problem, especially when you grab all trophy skills so you'll sell every crap looted from hostile fauna.

PB decided to go as much humor route this time as possible and it's awsome.
Sadly the overall story feels like been there done that where people are GMO instead of food (ME4 for example).
Sidekicks are not all great. Some are fun to take (Nyra who thinks everyone is degenerate :D), some boring, irritating or plain useless in combat (Nasty).

The antisleep mechanics is badly implemented (chapter 2 teleporting randomly).
Exploration is very rewarding generally (fuel, pots, unique weapons, etc), but the major mystery map pieces nets a reward which belongs to eraly game stages, not endgame when you will finally get it (unless you know where all pieces are and rush the game to get it as early as possible) which is bad.

Most of skills are very useful to have, but some are plain trolling the player (double XP from reading stuff that gives 10-50XP is an example).

As a form of art every game should slap the society a bit and Elex 2 decided to do it, this is awsome:
Covid mass hysteria shopping reference: toilet paper everywhere, and also soft toilet paper.

The biggest design crime of videogames, trashmobs respawn, is not unbearable here thanks to your jetpack. When I wasn't in the mood to fight low EXP weak trashmobs, I just flew away.
I still believe it would be better if trashmobs didn't respawn after a while automatically, but only from chapter progression as it was done in Gothic games.

Quest design is great, mechanically. You don't need to get a quest to solve it. An example you kill a few skelx named phillistines and you still get quest XP reward even if only later you find a questgiver who wants them offed.
In some cases I didn't find the questgiver though (a couple of trolls, 5 troll roots and unclaim goods supply crates - might be faction specific ones though).

Quest design contentwise is a hit and miss, but it is understandable as PB tried to cover every taste and character build.
Most are fun, some that are not are short.
However there is a horrible case with fighting 8 big groups of robots near the game end which is annoying and very grindy. I can understand why is that, main story rushers get a truckload of XP and motors to sell for cash at certain trader that pays well for those, but cmon, this is very bad.

Faces are horrible, PB should outsorce that part because it seems they can't make humans not ugly. :D
English voiceovers are fantastic.

Apart from a few annoyances I did not spot any huge bug to remember.

A great game if you ask me, it would be a sin if you don't play it.

Sorry for a bit disjointed impression, I just listed what came to mind.

I guess by your criteria a skeleton hugging some safe with a note to use head to open it is a bad writing case.
Especially in a german game where the word for head is "kopf", at least google translate says so making me wonder how this puzzle looks if you don't play the game with english language.

Sorry for one mild spoiler everyone, won't add more.
Play the game!

I thought you were talking about spoken humor.

When it comes to creating scenes that tell a story, yeah, PB is pretty good at that.

The example you mention reminds me of something I saw last night while playing. There was a skeleton lying on its back in a bathtub holding a toaster. It took me a moment to realize what it was, but I smiled when I did.

My very existence is a sin, so I suppose this will add one more pebble to the mountain.

I can't wait for December to see it rise as RPGWatch's GotY.

I can't even fathom the amount of butthurt it must take to make a person keep trolling about something half a year later. :)

By then there may have been time for a mod for Elex 2 to come out and win GOTY instead.

This is true. Though maybe the GoldBox Steam releases are counted as a new game, and then we have a strong contender there.

I just got this game. Is it best to be a king of one set of skills or a jack of all trades?

Abilities are linked to attributes so I always find myself slowly upgrading most things as those attributes rise. So you will need strength at a certain level before being able to upgrade strength based abilities, and most abilities cover more than one attribute.

I do use elex potions as well so in addition to the 30+ LP's I've got through levelling up I must have another 10+ I've made, quite a lot.

Having said that you could specialise in one area but you will probably end up with a load of unused LP's.

oh damn. Please don't tell me elex potions are a thing again. Is there still infinite natural elex in stores?

What is really stupid imo is that drinking ELEX potions has zero effect now. There is no longer cold or warmth but the moral system is now creation vs. destruction. Drinking ELEX potions does not do anything to Jax now. I don’t know if this is somehow explained in the game but it seems pretty weird that Jax can simply down ELEX potions without becoming "cold" or addicted now.

I agree it's strange that they changed that without any explanation. I never liked that mechanic though to be honest.

So far, I don't like the creation vs destruction mechanic either. Sometimes the choices in dialogue don't really make sense.

For example, early in the game there's a quest where you hunt down a group of Morkons for Caja. You can speak to them first, but you end up fighting them either way. I chose to tell them that they had to pay for what they had done, and my destruction decreased. Huh?
