Well, to balance out the fact I posted about the awful Marcus vs Isobel encounter, I decided to create a new thread to get a feel for which encounters Watchers really enjoyed in BG3. Mild tactical spoilers maybe? :)

I'm presently getting close to the end of Act III having just dispatched Orin. The satisfying part of this fight for me was the dawning realisation that I could use thunderwave and Djinni summons to be rid of those sanctuary protected Reapers enabling the boon of bhaal on Orin's Slayer form. Knocking them off the platform into the abyss felt great! Any stragglers, a well placed explosive arrow did wonders with. The slayer chased Gale up the stairway who was frightened but it allowed several well placed Sunbeams. Then my fighter and summons finished the job without deaths of anyone.

My favorite overall from my single playthrough isn't particularly elaborate or challenging actually. But it was exciting for the breadth of approaches it allowed and it was the largest in scale at that point. It was clearing the very first room in the Moonrise Towers in Act II; just getting a hold in there. First time I tried, my entire group suffered a nasty demise due to that Hunger of Hadar spell. It just shut my entire position down. So to combat that, I sent my hireling ranger in stealth around the side entrance, picking off one or two absolutists in the process, starting combat that way. The enemy were all at sea after that and it very much was a satisfying rout.

An honorable mention would be the Cazador Vampire Lord fight in Act III. That one took me the longest to get right and mechanically it shares that circle of protective enemies from the Orin fight. I ended up jumping my dwarf fighter all around the circle to take out the ritual spawn which took time to approach with Wyll, Gale and my hireling Ranger keeping the vampire busy at distance. Seeing a zombie form of Astarion kind of rubbed me the wrong way though as he was actually dead back at the start of Act I . But I digress. The first attempt I thought I'd won when I pushed Cazador off the edge. I got quite the shock when he rematerialized back on the platform! It also seemed like if I protected against Lightning, he'd use necrotic attacks and vice versa, so he was always doing damage. Not having a cleric probably made it harder than it should have been but it was a tough battle that I was relieved to win.

So what were your favorite encounters from the game? Feel free to regale with a tale or two.

Viconia, which was the only fight after Act 1 where I still feel things can go wrong rather fast. It has a number of elements that make it interesting:
  • Viconia herself is obviously going to be the "main" target, so I honestly don't know what she does, except for soaking a lot of damage in the first round. Fairly standard so far, but..
  • The main damage dealers are actually the two beefy enemies. This is very counter intuitive, and is probably the main reason it's such a challenge. It just feels wrong to not go Viconia -> Casters -> Beefy, but I suspect the correct order is actually Viconia -> Beefy -> Casters
  • Unless you have loads of AoE, which I never do at that point in the game. BG3 is a game where AoE is rarely the answer, so most min/max parties will have virtually none of it. The two only fights I can think of, post Act 1, where it genuinely makes life easier (instead of just being cool) is this one + the portal fight in Act 2
  • Darkness. Everywhere. This will be a non-issue for certain parties, but a real pain to others
  • Unpredictable enemies: This is related to second point. These are not enemies that we face all over the place, ultimately culminating in a fight with more of the same. They're mostly unknown, and they don't even behave as expected. I like that a lot

Interesting. I haven't found Viconia's BG3 iteration yet but given my past history with her, I'd probably be inclined to not want to fight her. Sounds like I need to check it out though. Hopefully she's not the punk imposter that Sarevok was reduced to! That was a fight I didn't enjoy on principle actually but once the key goal of eliminating the sanctuary source became apparent, it was straight forward enough.

I agree. In fact, his entire cameo just felt off for me, but that's a topic for another time

I did the Gortash encounter last night and it was much easier than anticipated; certainly not as hard for me as the Orin or Cazador fights.

I used stealth to take out many of the grenade and trap mounts ahead of time. I didn't bother engaging in dialogue as this can often give the enemy a massive advantage.

Took out at least two of the guards with my ranger sharpshooter and managed to catch Gortash in the doorway with a cloudkill and the Djinni restraining ability. It was a moment of luck that defined the fight. When he transformed into the Bane avatar, I had everything under control. The sole remaining grenade mounts even provided a couple of concussive grenades for the remaining henchmen still lurking behind the cloudkill. Not an especially memorable fight but one of the few where everything I came up with, appeared to work for a change.

Sounds like trash 80s metal doggeral I may have written as a teenager. ;)

More seriously, I stayed away from Raphael. I mean right away. Wasn't impressed with his random appearance in Act I at all.
