Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC Review – A JRPG Masterpiece, Now Polished to Perfection

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has finally made its way to PC after a long wait. Originally launched on the PS5, it was hailed as one of the best games of last year. Given that Square Enix’s last PC port, Final Fantasy XVI, left fans a bit disappointed, everyone was holding their breath to see how Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would perform on PC. And honestly, the port has blown past every expectation I had when it comes to technical quality and performance.

Right off the bat, it includes all the modern PC features you’d hope for, like DLSS, FSR, and other upscaling options. There’s also a wide range of graphical settings to tweak, letting you fine-tune the experience to your liking. The PC version even improves on the PS5 release in areas like lighting and texture streaming, on top of the expected upgrades in performance. It’s also impressively scalable, running well on both low-end and high-end systems. While I didn’t spend much time testing it on the Steam Deck, videos I’ve seen show it’s playable there too—though, naturally, the experience isn’t quite as smooth as on a full PC or PS5.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s PC port is a triumph, setting a new benchmark for how console-to-PC transitions should be done. Packed with modern features like DLSS, FSR, and scalable graphics options, it not only matches but surpasses the PS5 version with improved lighting, texture streaming, and performance. The game runs smoothly on a wide range of hardware, from high-end PCs to more modest setups, and even shows promise on the Steam Deck. Quality-of-life upgrades, such as fast-forwarding cutscenes and a beginner-friendly mode, make it accessible to all players. While minor visual quirks and occasional stutters persist, they’re overshadowed by the game’s technical polish and immersive gameplay. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a masterful JRPG, blending action and turn-based combat seamlessly, with a story that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly new. This PC port is the definitive way to experience one of the best games of the year.

Score: 9.5/10

Ooof, I don't agree with that. The game is good, but it isn't THAT good. At least not yet - there's still a ton of story to go for me.

The graphics aren't that great. They've got some really great character models, but the rest of the world (at least as of lower Junon) has been pretty bland. The water doesn't even make it to bland - it looks like something out of (unmodded) Skyrim!

There are also clearly some serious issues with crashing. It's hard to tell how widespread they are. I couldn't tell you if 80% of players have problems or if only 20% do, but it took until yesterday before Square/Enix even acknowledged one of the issues. It's hardly surprising that Square/Enix is terribly slow to get fixes out, but just because they mess that up all the time doesn't give them a pass.

The open world is weak, too. Exploration isn't very strong, though I have found a few things by venturing off the roads. Most of the open world stuff seems to just be going to the indicated place on the map, doing fight or a minigame, then going to the next one.

Sidequests are... better than last time? Sometimes better than last time. Sometimes right on par with last time - which wasn't AAA quality by a long shot.

Like I said, the game is still good. The music is top notch, the main story is excellent, the combat is really fun (and fairly complex), there's more materia than I know what to do with, the dynamic difficulty setting is working really well for me, and the screenshot functionality... oh, yeah. The built-in screenshot thing is crammed full of weaksauce. But the Universal Unreal Unlocker works great!

I'm also in the lower Junon area and agree with everything you wrote. It's still superior to Remake imo, atleast so far.

On the technincal side of things, I've had no issues at all.
