I've only played the demos, but I prefer Outer Gods, and, unlike Reign of the Old Ones, I plan on purchasing the full game.At the same time it looks decent, it looks nothing like the first game. I always wonder why publishers take an I.P. from a developer and then give it to another developer and develop what looks to be a completely different game while keeping the same name. I think the potential to alienate fans of the original game offsets the possibility of using the name to get them to buy in, but obviously publishers see it differently. The original Stygian's turn based combat and side scrolling perspective set it apart from all the other Cthulu games out there. This one looks more like most other recent Cthulu rpgs like Call of Cthulu or The Sinking City.
I understand that, but you would probably have been interested in the game regardless of the title. I am also interested, as I generally am in Cthulu like rpgs, but you have to admit that it looks nothing like the first game. I am also not commenting on the quality of the game. It might be quite good, and I may turn out to play it and think it is better than ROTOO, which was unique, but very flawed. But I still don't understand why one would name it after a game that only shares a general theme with its predecessor.I've only played the demos, but I prefer Outer Gods, and, unlike Reign of the Old Ones, I plan on purchasing the full game.
Still, I can understand how some would be disappointed if they enjoyed RotOO.
Also, it's not very similar to either CoC or The Sinking City other than the setting.
If that's the case, how much name recognition is there?I mean, name recognition. That's it. You may be right about it alienating fans of the original, but how many people is that?
I think that CoC is not very far from this. If I remember correctly it had several skills as light RPG element. And this Stygian game has it too. Also, it's not very similar to either CoC or The Sinking City other than the setting.
I played CoC. It's more of an adventure/detective game. Outer Gods feels more like an immersive sim, or at least that's the impression the much too short demo gave me.I think that CoC is not very far from this. There is just more action like a mix between CoC and FP Resident Evil
I have that on my wishlist. Some fans may be also interested in this:
