Grim Dawn is scheduled to receive a big feature update today, bringing it to version 1.1.4.0.

Boston, MA - July 25, 2019 - Grim Dawn gets huge feature update!
Crate Entertainment's critically acclaimed ARPG, Grim Dawn is receiving a huge free feature update today which marks a significant step forward in the game's evolution. The v1.1.4.0 update includes major improvements to the game engine which not only means significant performance gains but also enhanced skill effects and dynamic lights that really make the combat come to life.

The patch comes packed with quality of life improvements players have been asking for, including monster health bars, search functions for items and auto-looting for materials and consumables.

We are thrilled to get this update into players' hands. It has been a labor of love that puts Grim Dawn at the best it's ever been.

Grim Dawn and DLCs have collectively sold over 3 million copies, with Grim Dawn sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive recent reviews and both of its major expansions rated above 90%.
We have not received more information, but here is the info from the latest preview that will probably not be much different from the release today.

More information.

This looks like it's gonna be an excellent update to an already very nice game. Maybe it's time to finally buy those expansions and start playing again.

I sponsored this project back in the day, and played through it once to date. Not sure I'll ever replay it, but if the urge strikes me I'll make sure to acquire the expansions first.

Tried this again recently, and my opinion has improved.

It's still rather stale and boring in terms of moment-to-moment gameplay - especially compared to the best in the genre, but that's about the only weakness it has.

A significant weakness, true, but still.

Anyway, it's definitely not a game I would consider overwhelmingly positive by any stretch of the imagination - but it's a solid ARPG that's better than most of them.

For games I return to occasionally, Quality of Life announcements get me almost as excited as an expansions or major DLC news. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Love the ARPG genre - which do you prefer over Grim Dawn?

Love the ARPG genre - which do you prefer over Grim Dawn?

Depends on how wide we go and if we're talking long term or short term.

I'm a big gameplay/moment-to-moment guy - so I tend to value those aspects more than most.

Also, I generally don't spend hundreds or thousands of hours playing these games, meaning I don't really need a super deep set of mechanics.

I did once have this dream of the "perfect" game in all genres, so that I wouldn't have a reason to move to another game, but I've realised that just doesn't happen.

So, I just need a game to entertain me sufficiently until I feel I'm done with it.

Obviously, I love deep mechanics - but they need to be supported by a solid flow and foundation in terms of the combat itself.

So, I have a few favorites.

For the traditional ARPG (the straight-up Diablo clone) - I tend to prefer Diablo 3, even if it's a little shallow - and I hate the endgame concept of Rift-running. But it has fantastic moment-to-moment gameplay, and I adore the active skill variety and the environment variety. But, I've had my fill of the game now - and I doubt I'll return to it. It gave me around 150 hours or so, I think - which is more than most games do.

Actually, also, I have to say the recent WH Martyr 2.0 patch has changed the game for the better - and the game has the potential to stand among the best of them, but it still needs a lot of work.

If we go beyond the traditional, I think Hellgate London is my overall favorite.

Also, Anthem as the best moment-to-moment gameplay of them all - and I'd argue it could be the best in that specific way of any game I've ever played. Well, at least for the Interceptor Javelin.

Sadly, it has a severe lack of content - and it still needs a lot of work to become more than a short-term game.

But it has the potential to dominate the genre - or at least it did. I don't know if they can turn it around and the upcoming cataclysm update isn't enough for that.

To be honest, I think it will take at least a year.

However, I've seen countless "launch disasters" turn around. Division, Destiny, Destiny 2 - and many others. Even Fallout 76 has recently changed in the eyes of many - even though I always liked it.

For some reason, some of my favorite games have had rather unpopular launches - and I'm not sure why.

I do tend to enjoy games that try something new - instead of merely emulating what came before, especially if they make it work :)

I should probably add that if I was truly looking for a long-term ARPG to focus on, then Grim Dawn or Path of Exile would definitely be higher on the list than any of the others I mentioned.

But the genre doesn't really have enough meat on it to sustain my interest for that long.

Not these days, when great games are released all the time - and when my time is limited.

Back in the D2 days, though - those games would have been something of a wet dream for me, because the fidelity and moment-to-moment standards were much lower then.

Division 2 is also a very, very good looter - but it's a little too…. I don't know. Grindy and narrow in its focus.
