Images to inspire RPG locations

Well, these two shots are mine, but the calendar is a commercial thing I have only seen in a bookshop, and it doesn't contain any of my photos.

Meh reminds me of Detroit a few years back. It's no longer the city of manufacturing.

There's some cracking photographs of the ruins of Detroit, but I don't have them to hand. Don't think they're in my collection (which I will remedy) but I saw them in National Geographic or something.

I always hope Detroit will have a renaissance, one day. It's horrible to see, and it always seemed to me a city with a lot of character.

Kind of sad that Detroid has become like that … ruins. As you wrote like that.
We have industrial ruins here as well, mostly in the "Ruhrgebiet", mainly known for coal, but most of these ruins are demlished or even turned into "industrial museums" these days.

There's not much there tbh other than a lot of shit people. Not everyone of course, but more than your average place. Something about that city just brings out the worst in folks. I worked downtown for almost a decade.

The casino I used to work at. It could be an RPG location on its own.

Damn. Not to be rude, but I can feel my soul draining just looking at the casino. I can see why you scarpered for the sunshine.

Hey, I've been to that Casino and lost money and got drunk. Then went to a strip club afterward and lost more money. Now that was a fun night. Was in Detroit for an Iron Maiden concert.

It only sucked away half my soul, thank you very much.

Yes, it occurs to me I've run my mouth. Just that JDR was being very critical of Detroit, and I don't like casinos, so I was like, "Yikes - I see what you mean." But perhaps that's not what he meant. For me, that sort of windowless, faux-grand architecture of casinos is just really bleak.

When did you go?

Nah, what you said was fitting. Constantly being around a bunch of pissed-off gamblers was pretty draining at times. :)

I want to say that concert was in 2008. My old college roommate is the president of a German steel company in Detroit. He had a luxury box at the old Palace of Auburn Hills and that's where we watched Iron Maiden.

I have a million stories from that day and night but I won't bore you all. Was a crazy and fun trip. Also, been to the Greek Town Casino in Detroit. Detroit is crazy and sad but every time I've been there I've had fun or a crazy story to tell.

I found some of the Detroit photos I was going on about. They're from a photography book called The Ruins of Detroit, by Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre. I think they're some of the best photos I've seen illustrating a great city faded. I reckon that book would be a goldmine for post-apoc designs.

There's a few of them, so I put in spoiler tags to avoid monstering the page.

I was still working there in 2008. Who knows? Maybe I delt you some of those bad cards. ;)

It's Metro 2033 in America.

Some of those are surreal. Very cool and sad at the same time. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing! Bethesda could have used those photos as a source of inspiration for Fallout 3, it would have been even more immersive.

Were they taken long ago, or are there still many buildings like this today?
