A new update for Pathfinder: Kingmaker looks at companion romances.

Love in the Stolen Lands - Companion Romances

A life of adventure and the burden of rulership are no obstacle for deep feelings and devotion. The romances of "Pathfinder: Kingmaker" are here to enhance your roleplaying experience. On top of having their own stories, personalities and motivations, we've added additional depth to some of our companions by allowing players to romance them. Four of our brave party members are available as potential love interests: Valerie (romanceable by male PCs), Tristian (female PCs), Octavia, and Regongar (both romanceable by male and female PCs).

Valerie
Valerie appears rational and reserved. And yet, hidden behind all the self-control, her emotions yearn to break free. To win her heart you must first win her trust - and help her to come to peace with herself.

Tristian
Young and naïve, Tristian has yet to experience love. Afraid of the pain of heartbreak, he is hesitant to open himself to others. But when he does, you won't find a partner more tender and devoted than him.

Octavia
Octavia, the optimistic, bright-spirited wizard, is a true friend and confidant. But don't let her cheerfulness fool you – she sought freedom so desperately that the thought of losing it is something she cannot bear. For her, is love a source of happiness - or something to fear?

Regongar
Regongar is like an active volcano. Fierce and dashing, he can't live without danger and challenges. Is there a limit to his recklessness? Will he be able to stop before destroying everything he holds dear? At the game's start Octavia and Regongar are a couple on the verge of breaking up. It's up to you to help one of them find their new love (you!) or rekindle their old flame - and even become a part of it.

For the purpose of building a complete experience and adding more depth to the whole story, we tied the romances to the main storyline. To gain the attention of your love interest you will have to travel together and participate in the story events together. This will prompt additional cues and dialogue options with a character, allowing you to learn more about them and get them to know a little better.

Actions speak louder than words. Striking down a deadly monster at great risk to yourself, swaying an enemy to your side, or taking responsibility for a particularly tough decision can impress your love interest... or disappoint them.

There are no alignment restrictions on romances in the game. An evil character can fall in love with a good one, although keeping such a relationship alive may be harder than maintaining a romance between characters with similar alignment and values in life.

Romance in Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a journey, both intricate and exciting. At the end of it, you may be able to marry your beloved, or decide to skip the formalities and live together without titles and simply enjoy the relationship for what it is. In the end, this is your love story.

One more thing - Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep is coming!

If you love oldschool RPGs as much as we do, then you may want to check out Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep by our friends over at inXile Entertainment. Their game goes live on Tuesday, September 18th at 9am PST across Steam, GOG and Humble. Did you play the classic trilogy back in the day? Why not combine your vacation in the Stolen Lands with a little trip to Skara Brae?

Hail to the Kings!

Can my druid fall in love with a sheep? ;)
Huh? ;)

Romances by themselves are not a problem if they make sense.
It is when suddenly everyone and everything starts wanting to hump you that it becomes terrible - see PoE2. When everyone is pansexual, which ís just immersion breaking (except if it is a specific racial trait like that one Mass Effect race had). And even if everyone was pansexual, why should everyone desire a romantic relationship with you?
Immersion is king, and stupid "everything goes with everyone" romances break it.

Sometimes, you just get the feeling: "to prevent the devs from getting lynched by the SJW mob, everyone is now f***able"

Uh Oh someone here at the Watch hates romance. Can my druid fall in love with a sheep? ;)

Of course @TheSHEEEP; appreciates that comment.

Even I think it's gone a bit too liberal if one can romance the pets though...

Have to agree with this, although I haven't noticed anything like in PoE2 though, maybe it'll get worse as I advance?

I do remember cringing at it in DA:O though, it just got silly. At least make romance an option far enough down the friendship tree that it feels like a reasonable evolution instead of "what the hell just happened?".

Owlcats will have to release telemetric after a few months, I want to know how many people went for the threesome. For research purpose.

Interesting that to advance the romance, the companion has to be in the party during main quest stuff to get the romance triggers. That should make the romance feel more involved in the story but also harder to achieve, you can't just sweet talk someone at the camp. Downside, people will say that romances are required now...

Kinda sad that Jaethal isn't romanceable… She would have been perfect with an undead bloodline Sorcerer.

I've seen more straight dudes complaining about their straight female option being ugly and manly than people demanding "social justice" for game romance. People are already saying that Valeria is too manly to be straight…

The same thing happened with Dragon Age Inquisition, some people asked for Cassandra and Sera to be switched because they didn't like the appearance of Cassandra.

I prefer that you are required to travel with companion to trigger the romance - much more realistic that way.

Gosh, I much prefer Cassandra over Sera... couldn't stand her.

Valerie isn't as bad as people imagine her to be. Besides, she's a decent tank so likely you will travel with her anyway.

I don't actually have the insight to have an informed opinion, but I have the feeling things like gay romances are business decisions and not necessarily SJW related. It would be interesting to know what's more common, a straight guy playing a female and picking the gay option, or a gay person picking the gay option. I'm inclined to believe it's the former.

Personally, I'll never regard options as a bad thing. As long as everyone's not out to get into my pants just because they happened to be included in my party (coincidentally, I also dislike it when I can't actually choose who to include in my party).

I think DA:O was a bit much in terms of being hit on by everybody. "Right, you, back in your tent! And you - don't even think about it." :p

I haven't really noticed it being a problem otherwise. I manage to sail through most RPGs without being unduly harassed by randy pansexuals.

I am not a SJW, in fact far from it ! However, I don't mind if every NPC is err "f***able" by everyone. The way I see it is that, why can't NPC pick their sexual orientations based on what the sexual orientations of the player? I means, the whole game experience can change depending on the player choices, for example ending of games. My ending of Witcher 3 will not be same as your ending and that doesn't bother us yet we have problem if NPC is straight in my play though but gay in yours?

This should be win win for both the players and developers yet people doesn't like this and I don't understand it the reasons. Players will get far more romance options and the developers doesn't need to listen to player complain as to why can't I romance NPC xyz etc.

Just based on statistics, there should be more guy playing female picking the gay option. Although, I believe game telemetrics from BioWare has "no romance" as the most common (outside Leliana in DAO which was basically bugged).

Also, I suspect people who replay games tend to try all the options. I can't be the only one that does that right?

As a straight dude myself, I agree with the other straight dudes who complain that female romancable NPCs have gotten "ugly" over the last few years. I think its done on purpose specially in Bioware games of late and any developer with SJW bent. Maybe I am paranoid... :p

In all honesty, the only game where I´ve ever enjoyed "romance" was "The Witcher:EE".

Very simple and straightforward: You were just looking to get laid and like your typical "James Bond"-style character you were not looking for anything more than roll in the hay in between all the fighting & explosions, then this was combined with a bit of "gotta-catch´em-all" card collecting.

I´m all for romance in entertainment media, but in games it just feels too superficial to take seriously or to have any kind of fun with. Better with a bit of uncomplicated non-P.C. entertainment instead.

Maybe I'm getting old and (more) perverted but I want romances, sex scenes, the works. Especially if the female characters are hotties. Yes, I need to get out more. :D

I actually fail to see what ugly looking woman has got to do with SJW. If you mean to say they made them ugly on purpose, I think that would be a bad business decision? Maybe less stereotype could be regarded as SJW, but that's no reason to make them unattractive.

Now that you mention it, when did they look good? If you don't account for portraits like in the Infinity games, I don't remember them ever looking especially attractive to me? Maybe the problem is that new games leave too little to the imagination.

EDIT: Morrigan in DA:O was pretty hot though…I suppose there are other examples if you go outside RPG territory?

Attractive NPCs are low on my list of priorities when it comes to games. I actually prefer when there's not many of them, because most people in real life aren't super attractive.

In other words, I don't play games to masturbate. That's what porn is for.

@Silver Coin;, you can't go and remove posts that I'm trying to quote, it's very confusing. ;)

Anyway, if "casual sex" is the only thing present in PoE2 it's not interesting at all to me. When singe right romance can enhance the experience and immersion, the sex part I'm perfectly fine without.

I've never encountered a serious companion romance that doesn't take away from immersion. The idea that a player can develop passion towards an NPC is silly.

Original Sin 2 is also a bit of a sin.

Maybe conservatives think that ugly woman shouldn't exist ?
