The Codex has a review of Knights of the Chalice, the outstanding indie OGL game. There's some criticism of omissions and balance but, overall, the author enjoyed it. A sample:
Next thing that deserves mentioning is the enemy AI, as it really is top notch. It adapts to your party tactics and line-up well, effectively uses spell combinations and abilities. For example, is everyone in your party engulfed in web? You’re bound to have a fireball going your way to achieve extra fire damage. Some of your party members are protected by death ward? Archers with slaying arrows will be less likely to target them. It’s also common for pretty much your whole party to be completely disabled, due to good choosing of priorities and abilities among the enemy. The knight? Grappled and pinned by a giant. Wizard? Counterspelled. Cleric? Three archers are ready against his casting of spells. Second knight? Charmed. Have fun, you’re doomed.
More information.

This is the second review of KotC by the Codex, I think. Anyone out there who hasn't tried the demo (which stands alone from the full game, one of about 10,000 nice little touches by the developer), do yourself a favour and DO IT!!

I was following the title since about six months before release, so when it came out I knew to expect intense, challenging gameplay, BUT… The first fight is right outside the tower where you start the game. Thought I'd saunter on out and kick ass. The first one's always a throwaway right? Supposed to introduce you to the controls, make you feel good. Hahaha! Ohohoho! Entire party slaughtered.

KotC is really (as far as I know) the first game of its kind this century.

Nah, we had an interview with the dev earlier on. This review might be a little late, but such games never age :D

+1. It's nice to play the demo, it allows you to level up a few times (faster than the main game) so you get the hang of character development.

I always find it funny that a company with more than 1000 x the resoruces. Cannot even make combat gameplay 1/10 as good as this game:D and cannot make AI 1/100 as good.

I'm actually replaying this at the moment for a change of pace. Truly a wonderful combat engine and the graphics actually have a surprising charm that I enjoy. KotC 2 is an instabuy for me.

Yeah, I played the demo though about 5 times and eagerly got the full version.

The crafting system makes it a LOT easier, btw. Gotta set up each of your 4 with a crafting ability. Home made adamantite vorpal war axe +5 is your friend :)

Also, i put everyone in mithril chain shirts and enchanted them with Spellresist and gave them all crafted dex items. heaps of movement. ;)
