Last game(s) you bought

I don't recall you being into Metaphor. I don't foresee you being into Persona, that being the case.
I keep hoping to find one jrpg that will flip a switch in me and make me start liking them all.

Same thing happened with FromSoft games. Tried Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, and thought it wasn’t for me. The I played and finished Bloodborne, which lead to me playing and finishing Sekiro and it all flipped. I then played them all.

Maybe Clair Obscure will be that? Which might lesd to Metaphor and Persona? :D

I'm not sure I'd call Clair Obscur a JRPG though. It's more of a mashup of different genres. Mechanically, it's very JRPGish, but the writing, characters, and overall style aren't like a JRPG at all.

I played through the first few hours over the weekend. The story seems interesting enough, and it looks nice from an artistic standpoint, but I didn't care for it enough to keep playing.

If you're more into story, you might like it more than I did. Gameplay-wise, I didn't find it compelling at all.

I’m definitely in it for the story. But I am a bit worried about the story, since it’s getting such univeral acclaim. I hope it’s not just your emotional tear-jerker of a story and that it also has something profound to say.

Another interesting thing is I keep hearing more and more about how brutal the parry mechanics are with regards to timing, even on the easiest difficulty (some are directly referencing Sekiro, which apparently the game director was a big fan of). Though I’m not sure if that’s more towards the end of the game or if it even is on the main path. So that gives me some pause as to how many people have actually finished it. Anyway, I’ll have to see for myself.

I doubt there are any battles were you absolutely have to parry at least on normal difficulty. You can just dodge which is much easier. Also, normal difficulty is challenging enough where you won't feel like you should be playing on hard like many other games.

That’s a good point; so I read correctly that parry technically is completely optional? You can always dodge instead? The person that was saying parrying is brutal was on the easiest difficulty, but apparently she specced her character to get the highest bonuses on parrying. So it sounds like she dug her own grave.

Well, I ended up getting the 20th anniversary Guild Wars collection.
I'll start playing after the 5th o7

Also, goddamn this game's taking ages to download.

I never tried Guild Wars, is this a single player version or the mmo? Because if it can be played offline, I'd be interested.
The MMO. Never played a proper one (I don't think Warframe really counts?), so this is gonna be my first experience with the genre. Actually, this might be my first time actually playing a multiplayer game other than Warframe, though I'm gonna try and avoid multiplayer as much as I can😅

I don't think it can be played offline. I'm probably just gonna try tosolo all of the content, from what I've seen online the game has this entire heroes/characters system where you can have like 8 characters and extra pets on top of those in your party so yeah. (i think the 8 companions thing unlocks in an expansion, and you can only have 3 in the first campaign)

Still on sale btw (atleast for the rest of the 29th, IDK which timezone Arenanet follows). 8 USD for all the expansions and a few extra things.

I've bought Dino Crisis Bundle and Breath of Fire IV from GOG, as a means to strengthen their Preservation Program and also to indicate they are in the right path.

GOG, keep the goo' ol' video games of yore coming

Gears of War 5
Gears 5: Hivebusters
Gears Tactics

I haven't played a Gears game since GoW 1. I was originally only going to purchase Gears Tactics since it looks like it might be a decent XCOM clone, but the entire bundle is on sale for only $10 more.

Gears Tactics is more about the battles and story than XCOM, and the combat is much faster-paced. I really enjoyed it.
I didn't know anything about the Gears lore and still found good to play.

Wartales. I got the bundle which includes the Pirates of Belerion DLC.

My initial impression = this game is pretty tough. I'm playing on "experienced difficulty", but perhaps I should even be playing on novice... my mercs simply aren't strong enough to defeat enemies for an "easy" contract so I've resorted to searching for low level groups of bandits that I can kill for experience.

I think both games have thin stories, and yet I give XCOM2 a grade like 0.5 higher than Gears Tactics. Now, the combat in Gears Tactics is better, especially because if we choose to shot first in the round, it doesn't end for the char, Firaxis!!!

Well, if it's only 0.5 worse than XCOM 2, I made a good choice. :)

I meant story-wise. That's because, let's be honest, both stories are nothing to write home about (back when we're supposed to write home about something - actually, to write something :p)

But what, in the long run, makes XCOM2 a better choice? The plethora of good mods available to it. Last time I checked Steam Workshop, Gears Tactics had no mods (I've read there are few mods on Nexus but I never checked it).

I always confessed here that I'm a little biased toward XCOM2 - I finished it 3 times already (though, believe me, I never played it with Long War of the Chosen mod). IMHO the worst parts in Gears Tactics are the bosses fights - they're nothing more than bullet sponges and thus a combat that drags on tends to be boring.

Back in 2020 I created a thread here where I shared my initial impressions of Gears Tactics. If you care to read them (they can work as a sort of mini-review) please visit: https://rpgwatch.com/forum/threads/gears-tactics-initial-impressions.45232/
