Oh man, you gotta give those FF games priority! Those first six games are the stuff of which gaming dreams are not only made but also realized. And I applaud your astute purchase!!

I still gotta play 2-6. 1's the only one I've played from the 2d games (relic of its time, fun enough, but pretty basic).
2's one of the two FF games I've dropped, along with X. The wrong games at the wrong time, I guess.

I gotta beat Rebirth first though 😭

I wouldn't call 1-3 must-plays even if you're a FF fan. If you're short on time, just start with FF IV. It's a big step up from the previous titles imo. I think IV and VI are generally regarded as the best of the classic FF games.

Yeah, that's what I've always heard. I eventually wanna get through all of the FF games though. Next up are FF7Rebirth and FFXIII or FFXV's Ep Ardyn DLC if I decide to finally buy it. Not including it in the royal edition was an ass move on Square Enix's part :\

That sounds borderline masochistic to me, but I'm of the opinion that not all FF games are worth playing. :)

I have often been described as a masochist by those who've got front row tickets to my gaming shenanigans.
Some proof.

I did literally everything in the game except for beating pantheon 5 (a 40ish bosses long boss rush) no hit or with all the bindings (essentially, lv1)
(yes I like "showing off" my hollow knight badge of masochism honor)

And yeah, it's prolly a "goal" that'll cause me trouble in the end, but hey, I've already beaten a fair chunk of em! (1, 7, 8, 9, 12, 15). Excluding the 2 MMO's I've only got... 8 games left! oh jesus fucking christ that's a lot wait damn, I forgot to count the spinoffs oh goddamn that is a fuckton of spinoffs.
I take it back, I do NOT want to beat all the FF games.

I've never played Hollow Knight, but with a 97% rating on Steam, I'm sure there are worse games you could have sunk that much time into. :)

As for FF, my experience with most of them is that I either liked it or bounced off hard. I quit X and XIII almost immediately and never looked back. I also disliked 8 and 9 but still finished them since that was back when I had a lot more time on my hands.

I liked what I've played of XII though and want to try a full playthrough if I can ever fit it into my queue. Not sure about XV, and I didn't care much for XVI when I played the demo.

I already talked about my opinion on I.

I love the VII, VIII, IX triplet (with VII or VIII alternating as my pick for the best FF game depending on my mood). They also come with parts that are products of their time, but parts of modern ports lessen those aspects and I'm still willing to ignore those due to the stories and worlds that they present.

Played XII last year and while I decided that I liked the game as the credits rolled, my appreciation and love for it only grows the more that time passes (still unsure of whether I loved Vaan's role in the story or am utterly baffled by it). The gameplay started off strange, and by the end it was at once extremely confusing (the feeling of "Am I doing this right? Nah I think I'm fucking something up" never quite left me) and also way more fun than it should've been. XII's gameplay is also the only reason I keep running away from XIII. XII's gameplay had aspects of automation in it, and you could definitely just make a squad of nukes from the gambit system, but in the end, it was still your own planning and gambit setups that led to all that actually happening. From the 4-5 hours I've put into XIII so far, they seem like they saw XII's gameplay and said "yeah, good, that, but also we'll remove all the things that actually made it a game. It's like playing Factorio versus watching a video of someone playing Factorio (the gameplay so far has literally been enter, enter, 3 second gap, enter, enter, repeat). I'm hoping it gets way better really quickly or I'm gonna end up hating this game, which'd be a shame because I'm really digging the setting so far.

XV might just me the game I love the most out of any FF game in some weird fucked up way. It's easily the FF game I've spent the most time in, something like 300 hours. 100%ed it too. It wasn't my first open world game or anything, but it was the first time I lost myself in one. The perfect storm of the lockdown hitting the world and me having just bought the game led to a month of doing nothing but playing XV. I still adore the main trio of bros (Ignis my beloved (❁´◡`❁)), and I'll still open up the game to fuck around in the monster truck from time to time. I also love the setting (and coming in super late gave me the advantage of actually being a somewhat cohesive overall narrative, even if it was split across a game, 3 dlcs, a movie, an anime series and some random ass extra side scrolling beat em up that I've dropped 4 times now). One of my few "guilty pleasures" (nvm the fact that it doesn't make me feel any sort of guilt)

I'll get to XVI eventually ("eventually" being a code word for "my backlog is growing at an uncontrollable rate and I don't know how to stop it")

It's a huge backlog already, and no idea where to add these.

At a certain point I planned on playing through all Metal Gear/Solid. Played through the first 2 Metal Gears, the 2D ones which were pretty solid. And then the streak died with the first Solid. Very hard to play through that 3D from back then.
So, I'm a little wary about whether I'll stick with these old FF games. But maybe I will, seeing as I stuck with the 2D Metal Gears, even though they're quite aged.

What would be the main attraction for these first FF games? Story? Combat? Exploration?
It'll certainly take some patience with them, as I assume they're quite slow? Most games that old usually are.

The main attraction of playing them now is nostalgia. I'm not sure how much they're going to appeal to people who didn't play them back in the day. Unless you're particularly a fan of retro JPRGs.

Have you played Nine Sols? I watched someone beat the final boss and it looked brutally difficult.
Not yet! Saving up for it... and Citizen Sleeper 2... and Metaphor... and Clair Obscur... and Deltarune... and Silksong
Brutally difficult sounds awesome though, that shit's my shit. That and really good stories : P

Their main attraction these days is being museum exhibits. No reason to play em except for exploring the series tbh. Especially 1. It's as basic an rpg as basic could be.

As JDR said (and from what I've heard), 3 is where they start to resemble modern FF worldbuilding, and IV's when the series really finds its footing.

Back in the day, I bought IV and VI (2 and 3) on SNES, along with Chronotrigger. I bounced hard off IV... it had a horrible translation... but VI is still to this day one of the best games in the series. V hadn't been localized yet at that point. It's a forgettable entry.

I never loved VII. I think its popularity has more to do with being a lot of people's first Final Fantasy than the quality of the game itself. I felt similarly about VIII.

IX was my favorite of the PS1 era.

I loved X. I played X-2 also, but didn't finish it. Loved XII (XI was an MMORPG, which I skipped)

Hated all the XIII's.

Skipped XV. Totally unappealing to me. (XIV is another MMORPG, still going to this day).

I enjoyed XVI, as different as it has become from the earlier games.

I quite agree about FF seven, it's fun and all yet by no means even close to my favorite in the series. The mini games alone are enough to drive me bonkers! And yes indeed, any online FF is of zero interest to me.

I've heard and read many good things about Hollow Knight, I have to get that one at some point.

Death Stranding Director's Cut. I really need to stop buying all these games that I don't have time to play. :)

I never had much interest in Death Stranding, but seeing the trailer for Death Stranding 2 made me want to give it a shot.

Clair Obscura Expedition 33 - looks really cool, hearing great things, and after finishing Avowed and not sure what to play ... I saw this on GreenmanGaming for 20% off. Sold.

Jedi Survivor - didn't *love* Jedi Fallen Order (not a souls like fan), but at <$12 I figured why not, especially since patches hav reportedly made it playable on Steam Deck.

Wow that is a great price. Is that on GMG? I'm guessing that is a VIP deal or similar?

Well, you are a gamer....

pibbuR who recently halved his >20 years backlog, but refuses to tell you how.

PS. Problem is of course that we don't know which of all those games (on sale) we will want to play. DS
