I doubt you have missed it, but in case you have: The end is nigh.

In the comments people mentioned alternatives.
Please post every one of them as a reply in this thread, so I can update the list in this first post.

Please, check them out, so in June or so we can have a poll and see where the majority of our members will go to in case there is no new site built or Myrthos can not find anybody who he trusts to take over this one.

Alternatives:

HiddenX:
RPGWatch Steam Group
I have created a thread there were you can post your RPGWatch user name (you have to join the group first).
If you want to see new curated RPGs please join the
RPGWatch Steam Curator

Pladio:
in order of my recommendation:
- https://www.worldofplayers.de/ - probably the most avid PB community out there but with news and discussions on lots of other games/topics - so would be very useful for some of our member - main issue is they're mostly German - but they've been hyper helpful in English to me whenever I asked and I'm sure too others too. I would assume they'd be fine with a couple hundred migrants.
- https://sorcerers.net/ - More of a focus on D&D but lots of news and discussions on other RPGs
- https://www.rpgfan.com/ - News Site - no forum
- https://rpgamer.com/ - News Site - no forum
- https://www.gamebanshee.com/ - News Site - no forum
- https://rpgcodex.net/ - very similar news to RPGWatch - but the forums are crazy - although some people there are helpful

Wolfgrimdark:

If that one does not work, try this one from HiddenX:
https://discord.gg/NPWYTAeGnr

Couchpotato:

Alrik Fassbauer:

Heckle
- https://fextralife.com/
a decent news source about RPGs, although they tend to produce a ton of content for popular games, which can clog the feed sometimes

Zloth
- https://forums.pcgamer.com The RPG section is pretty small, but the forum is well moderated

Daveyd
- https://www.reddit.com/r/RPGWatch/ if anyone wishes to be a moderator let me know.

This looked promising at first, but it looks like their newsfeed literally consists of copying every RPGWatch news post, and their forums look like they've been largely dead for years?

I think they have an agreement with Myrthos to automatically import our newsbits.

Makes sense. Also out of curiosity, how'd there end up being almost 4000 members in the RPGWatch Steam group? Are they coming in because of the Steam Curator?

They come from here and from Steam/Steam Curator - but I know only a small fraction of them in person.

Personally, I'd say … the forums of Larian. But that's simply a personal taste thing, because that was my very first RPG forum (apart from Attic, which is long gone) I've ever been in.

The DSGVO https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation killed a LOT of forums.
Meanwhile those, at which it was directed at, "live long and prosper", and become even bigger (everything google & FB).

Regarding other places, I really don't like discord personally. If you search google you will find reports about how discord is very vulnerable to hackers, I experienced weird hacking attempts when I had it. Besides that, overall I just think the format of discord sucks. There is no good reason to have to download a separate program that is shady to begin with in order to have a forum.

Reddit is ok, probably the best alternative suggested so far. The only problem with reddit is that there is a site wide bias towards the left, (meaning censorship heavy) and I would hate to see rpg watch fall under that influence.

If the rpg watch subforum on reddit could be independently run then that would be great. But still, to be honest I think just making an independent free standing site where you don't have to depend on reddit would be better. All of this is my 2 cents and my opinion, please understand not trying to start a debate or controversy of any kind.

I imagine the answer may be different depending on whether you are here more for the forums or the news. I personally depend on the news and don't use the forums much. I would love to know the best alternatives for news in particular.

I think the closest thing to RPGWatch for news that you'll find is either the Codex or GameBanshee although neither is a true replacement. Also, neither posts news about JRPGs so you'll have to look elsewhere if you care about those (although the Codex has a JRPG discussion forum).

If nothing works out I'll just lurk on the Codex or Gamebanshee for news.

Maybe re-open my small forum site from years back as well.

Also Gamebanshee does have a forum but it 's very silent.

Gross. Nice job summing up why that's a lousy site, though.

It's also probably the only site where people actually care about RPGs beyond AAA.

Even on RPGWatch when I posted about Prelude to Darkness' source code being released there was… 0 posts or any other response.

On 'dex people are already modding it.

And it's one of the best RPGs ever released, also the only really similar to Arcanum or original Fallouts. Yet here nobody cares about it, nobody even gave it a try, probably, because it's not advertised or hyped by popular sites.

'dex is definitely better than any other site when it comes to RPGs. Of course there are some trolls or really odd people, but most are genuine and helpful. There is also no other place to find so much information about RPGs, no matter how obscure and crap they are.

And the fact that snowflakes get offended by 'dexian honesty is a good thing. Better to keep trash out!

In my experience, reading RPGWatch for 15 years and the Codex for 20 years, on the whole the tastes here are basically the same as the Codex. The problem you're running into is that this is a much smaller forum (20-50X smaller at a guess?) and you can't expect to spontaneously start discussion on a 20-year old game that was niche even when it was released. RPGCodex is far better suited for things like that, no doubt about it.

Set up camp at the Discord. I'd imagine you could have your own channel there for news.

Ah yes, the vaunted "honesty" that lets half of the Codex (sorry, the 'dex) be as racist, misogynist and homophobic as they'd like, because they're "just being honest". I won't lose any sleep over missing out on trying to talk about RPGs with people who are half as smart as they think they are, thanks.

We talk about non AAA RPGs here all the time, btw, which you'd know if you actually cared to look instead of preferring to feel superior (a Codex specialty).
