RPG General News - Diablo-likes?

He must be stuck in time as the term Diablo clone has been used for almost thirty years. As the first game spawned hundreds of similar games over the decades.

We use to use to call such games Hack and Slash as well.

I think diablo clones have always been the isometric hack and slash games so hack and slash usually refers to third person or first person hack and slash.

I don't consider Diablo and Diablo clones rpgs.

That works as well as combat and stat numbers is the main priority. :rotfl:

They already call them "Action RPGs" (ARPGs), a term which was coined by Diablo.

Source? As I never considered them ARPGs.o_o

No source. I just remember the term began being used to describe Diablo and Diablo-likes after the original Diablo came out. Similar to how Ultima Online coined the term "MMORPG" and all the ones that followed were referred to the same way.

I did a quick search and this article in Forbes refers to it in their description of ARPGs:

What Is ARPG?
ARPG stands for Action Role Playing Game. A subset of the RPG genre, ARPGs have a focus on real-time combat, hence the action part of the name. They also typically feature an isometric or top-down view along with hordes of enemies to kill, some of which will drop loot.

The 1984 game Dragon Slayer is credited as the first action RPG game, but for many the genre really started with the release of Diablo in 1996. This also represented a bit of a split for the genre and its terminology, which is still a little unclear today. Most people consider an ARPG to be Diablo-like, for want of a better phrase, with the isometric view, dungeons to explore and loot to grab. However, the early ARPGs, and many games that still use the tag on platforms like Steam, sit more within the action-adventure genre.

I've seen a few people refer to Diablo clones as ARPGs. We've had at least one discussion here before about how it's somewhat confusing since others refer to games like TW3 and CP 2077 as ARPGs.

The drama of Rod Fergusson saying that was more connected to him saying it right after (or during?) the huge Path of Exile 2 reveal video.
It was kind of impressive of tone-deaf that was, for him to say that at that moment. When PoE2 was basically showing Diablo how it's done.
Diablo 3 and 4 have been such directionless messes. And for him to be so irked by PoE2 showing them off, and to post that. It's understandable to be feeling envious; but c'mon. Have a little self-restraint and don't post that.

I think of them as a distinct subgenre of action RPGs. "Diablo clones" is what they used to be called in the 2000s, but I don't see as many people using that phrase anymore.

Yes - an action RPG is every RPG with real-time combat.

For example Diablo clones are action RPGs and Souls-likes as well.

Diablo-like is a perfectly good term, imo. "Diabloid" might be even better one, because it shorter, and because it allows me to call (almost)combat-less "run, click, and talk" RPGs "Discoids".

Personally I prefer if game genres get less compared to earlier games as they go along. Otherwise every release thereafter is a commercial for the originator and its franchise. I like the term isometric action RPGs

In my opinion Diablo 1 and 2 were great games. 3 moved away even more from role playing and focused more on action, but it became good with updates. 4 is even more of a departure and is much more mmo-like.

There are a lot of great games in this genre that are more similar to the early Diablo games and I'm much happier playing them.

I've been using term "Diablo tarzı" in my own language which means "Diablo style" when trying to describe a game in this category to my friends for nearly 25 years. Gameplay may have been improved in those years, but in their core these kind of games are always same and a clone of Diablo 2. So instead of describing them as ARPG which is a much broader term (after all Gothic series are all also ARPGs) it perfectly makes sense to use Diablolike since Diablo devs invented this formula. After all when someone uses the term Soulslike for a specific game, nobody lynches them.

I am always wary when someone wants to change the language of something, or say "this is the word that must be used!"...in my humble opinion, there is often a "control freak" mindset behind this.

*mini-rant about language police - only bother reading if bored*
I just am one of those difficult people who always ask questions, and wonder why? "Question everything" is a good motto, because it makes people who want to control things uncomfortable. Language is really powerful, as the main communication conduit between human beings, and so whenever I hear there is a trend to change a word or whatever, it just makes me suspicious.

So I enjoy using the "forbidden words" on purpose, just because I can, lol. Words I still use regularly, even though they were deemed "incorrect" now, by the "cultural powers that be" -- "mankind" "master bedroom" "policemen" "policewoman" "actress" "actor" "disabled" "homeless" (believe it or not, among this censorious wing, they want to use the word "houseless" to replace the standard word used - "homeless" - its very bizarre, but they think this is a necessary change....my reaction is wtf? Why?? -- yikes!)

*end of mini-rant*

Anyway, use whatever word you like best, lol - my 2 cents. "Diablo clone" is fine, "Diablo-like" is fine, "Action RPG" is fine,
they are all fine words to use. (y)
