RPGFan checked out Avowed and Path of Exile 2:

Random Encounter 310 – Preview Week with Avowed & Path of Exile 2!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we’re chatting about previews of two games we’re excited for in 2025!

First up is a hands-on preview of Obsidian’s newest first-person RPG, Avowed. A spin-off from the beloved Pillars of Eternity series, Avowed is being presented as Obsidian’s answer to Skyrim. That said, it has an identity all its own, avoiding the full-on open world for a series of expansive zones, similar to their previous RPG, The Outer Worlds. Mark got a chance to play through some of the early game, and he is excited to share his impressions!

Next, we sent Zek all the way down to LA for a hands-on preview of Path of Exile 2, the sequel to the long-running, free-to-play action RPG, Path of Exile. What started as a Diablo-clone has evolved into a game with a massive community of fans who support the game through cosmetics and other ethical in-app purchases. Does this sequel live up to the standard set by the original, or did they literally sell out? Zek thinks it’s the latter, and we hope so too!

First Path of Exile 2 Review:

-Campaign about 35-40 hours
-"Dark Souls of ARGPs" another reviewer thought the same thing
-No difficulty options
-No easy game
-Lots of challenging boss fights
-Feels so rewarding to beat them
-Dark Souls and Elden Ring feeling
-Maps are astronomically large (1 h from side to side)
-Maps feel a little bit empty in terms of events
-Scratched the tiniest surface of the game after 40 hours
-Great sense of discovery (mechanics, builds and lore)
-Feels like 3 games into one
-Almost limitless combinations of builds
-Lot easier to respec your skills
-50-100 changes was no problem
-Outstanding dark theme art direction
-Clearly inspired by Diablo 2
-Details on skill effects and boss designs are the best in the industry in the ARPG genre
-Blown away by the amount of detail
-Most dynamic combat in an ARPG
-Switch to controller was a revelation
-Feels like a game that was designed for controller first
-Plays even better than Diablo 4 with a controller
-Potential to be the alltime king of the genre
-Some bugs and crashes occurred
-Strong believe that the developers will join the annals of greatness alongside Larian Studios and FromSoftware

Looking good.

Comparing a game to the greatest of all time before it even releases is bold, but it's not all so shiny.

You have to pay real money to buy storage space, and in this type of game having storage space is insanely important. The game is basically unplayable without a huge stash to the point that stash space requiring real money makes the game efectively pay to win. If you put that together with the fact that you need to pay at least the price of an average game to even be able to play the Early Access, seems a bit disappointing for a game that's advertised as "free to play with only cosmetics microtransactions".

Worth mentioning that Early Access packs scale up all the way to the $500 supporter; I personally love those huge packs of goodies when it's a game I'm hyped about, but if Blizzard did that next day there would be riots with torches and pitchforks on the streets.

Does the author not know what latter means? Or am I misreading?

"Does this sequel live up to the standard set by the original, or did they literally sell out? Zek thinks it’s the latter, and we hope so too!"

Latter would be referring to "or did they literally sell out" and Zek think's its the latter and they also hope this. Why would someone hope a company sold out?

Hmm...seems Twitter links don't embed on the forum anymore.

They used to show the post but now it's just a link.

No difficulty options for PoE 2? That's quite a departure for a game in this genre. And it's apparently pretty challenging? I'm becoming mildly interested now.

Surprised to hear that it plays better with a controller though. I'm trying to wrap my head around how/why a Diablo clone could be better with a controller.

That's another thing that in any other game people would be saying "they're dumbing it down" but in this game it gets sold as a positive. I honestly don't know what makes everything around this game appear like we're saved, war will end and cancer will be cured thanks to PoE2.

I do think it will be a very good game, but hopefully keyboard controls will still be decent.

1. Dumbing down
The thing is POE1 has grown so much that you could almost call it bloated. The new league mechanics added over 10+ years were sort of just different journeys to the same destination. For POE2 they've taken what they consider 8, iirc, mechanics and adapted them so they all have a unique place in the progression system. Each appears to drop something unique you can use to enchance your gear.

As far as the skills go, I like the look of the new system much more. The old was all about finding that 6 slot item then that was the only active skill you'd use while maybe throwing a golem or something on the smaller pieces. Now every skill gets to be 6slot but also has tougher limitations which is a layer of complexity.

The devs often say they want to make it more accessible to new players and I think they're on the right track. But all classes can still use all skills. My only worry there is the ascendancy classes won't fit the skills, such as my idea of making a D&D style dual-wielding Ranger.

2. Hype, ending war and curing cancer.
It's 2024. Surely everyone already has stash tabs? :)

Having all MTX carry over from POE1 is probably the biggest builder of good-will that's possible. They could have made us buy them all again, it would have been easier to implement, but they made a decision that's clearly entirely in favour of the players instead of the greedy decision. POE has had a lot of players and that's a lot of good will. A good track record, too. So many free content updates. One of the best F2P business models out there, if not the best. People feel comfortable being hyped because they know they're not going to be milked or locked out of future content unless they buy a $70 expansion with only 1 new class.

Plus, it really does look like a good game. We can all see that. "Becoming mildly interested" all 'round!

PoE 1 doesn't have a difficulty option either. You get some disadvantages at certain points in the storyline. I'd imagine PoE 2 would be similar. It's all very close to diablo 2's system with normal - nightmare- hell difficulty, except that PoE 1s campaign is so large now that there is no need to replay acts anymore.
