Sacrifice is the acclaimed real-time strategy game that focuses on combat instead of resource gathering. The only two resources you'll need to worry about are mana and souls. Need more units? Capture the souls of your enemy. Cast spells of awesome power. Choose which gods to support and you will be rewarded with a different selection of spells.
Banish your enemy by sacrificing one of your allies at his altar...

More information.

God damn awful. Economy management is half the fun of RTS!

Thanks for getting this on there, HiddenX! This one deserves some more info because it is a very unique game.

At its heart, the game is an real time strategy game but instead of having an isometric view where you scroll around all over the map directing units as needed, you play a wizard in third person perspective. Instead of building units in bases you simply summon creatures on the spot. Instead of harvesting resources, you harvest souls. Of course, being a wizard you've also got some spells at your command, which require mana to cast.

So, in a typical scenario, you'll start out with a few creatures plus a few souls which you use to summon up more creatures for your army. You'll have an alter to defend and several mana fountains will be found all over the map. Your enemy will have a similar setup. You both then head out onto the map and capture the mana fountains; turning them either into manaliths (which add to your mana) or additional altars. As you move on out you can choose between bringing your creatures along with you or tying a few off to the structures you make - which leaves them trapped near the structure but greatly increases their defenses.

Eventually your armies will clash and your critters will start pulverizing each other. You'll give typical RTS commands - telling your critters to move here or there, defend you, attack that, and so on. You can (and definitely should) divide them up into groups assigned to hot keys. You can also cast spells to help your creatures or attack enemies. As your creatures are defeated you can run over them to pick up their souls (which float above the corpse) and even summon more creatures. The souls of enemy creatures can be retrieved, too, but to get them you have to summon "sac doctors" who suck out the souls and take them to the nearest alter to be tor… <ahem> to be persuaded into joining your side - at which time they become yours to summon in whatever creature you please. Sac doctors are trivial to kill so, to get the enemy's souls, you'll need to win the battle.

Between scenarios (and at the start of the game) you'll find yourself facing the gods of the realm. These gods will all try to get you to do their scenario for them - and therein lie the RPG elements of the game. When you pick a god to work for, you'll be granted the ability to summon a new creature and be given a new spell to use and you'll keep both through the end of the game. As the game progresses, the new creatures become more powerful and the spells become QUITE devastating.

Those scenarios are highly variable, too. If you enjoy the game, you'll find some pretty impressive replay value by picking different gods at different times.

The campaign can get to be pretty difficult but, once you get the hang of how much to defend with and how much to attack with, it gets easier. The game does allow multiplayer but I'm not so sure it's working after all these years.

P.S. Hear Jennifer Hale in her early(ish) years! Oh, and some guy named Tim Curry. He's, like, some sort of actor or something I guess. ;)
