The latest developer journal to hit the official Chronicles of Spellborn site takes a look at factions.
More information. It's pretty nifty to roll up a new player character, take your first steps upon some unknown Shard, learn how to point your bow in the general direction of (preferably) an opponent and actually hit him with an arrow. In fact, it can be pretty mesmerizing. Maybe even more so, if you do it again and again, with a sword or spell. But it's all kind of useless if you're just shaving off life force of some random bloke, who happened to be within the range of your weaponry. Imagining him to be a part of some smuggler's organization, which was peddling illegal wares into town, now that's already a bit more enticing.
To prevent you, the player, from getting tired thinking up all these kind of jobs and associations with other characters, and then having to decide how they should react to your advances (or stray arrows), we have factions. This is basically just a fancy way of saying that there are multiple character-groups within the game, each with their own history and associated goals. Some of these factions are friendly, but others are hostile enough to reward those stray arrows you expelled with a blunt object to your cranium.
