From what I remember quite a few rpgWatchers liked the previous ones, I personally had a lot of fun with 2.

I was one that enjoyed the series. I was never a big fan of RTS, but Spellforce 2 had enough RPG elements such as a skill tree and progression that it managed to hook me. Even others in a fantasy setting such as Warcraft or Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth didn't captivate me like Spellforce.

I really only enjoyed Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars. The following titles were fun, but just more of the same and it became repetitive. Spellforce 2 Faith in Destiny seemed unfinished and the story abruptly ending without coming to a conclusion, maybe they continued the story in Demons of the Past but I haven't played that one yet.

I had a lot of fun with the originals, but remember they were released a long time ago...

They tried a addon for spellforce 2 a couple of years ago...but at that point it had been out for a long time and I don't think it aged well.

I used to love developing my guy with items and large scale battles....would love to see it redone with a modern engine.

Yeah, I really liked the game.
It has a large world to discover, a not-too-bad story (for an RTS, anyway) and supported a number of playstyles.

I also played S2 first , it was a fairly solid RTS/RPG blend.

Well, you can call it a lot of things, but "mediocre" certainly doesn't characterize it correctly. When I hear "mediocre", I think the developers failed or they phoned in their game. Not the case here.
The early SpellForce games were one of the few mixes of RPG & RTS which actually worked. Creative, ambitious, looooong and surprisingly polished games with very good campaigns. SF1 was overloaded with features, SF2 was almost too streamlined and polished.
Of course such a mix isn't for everybody. I consider SF2 the best game of that year - it came out in the same month as Oblivion -, but others couldn't get into it. It's a matter of taste.

S2 at the time went under the radar of most people

I blame JoWooD. Brilliant idea to ship an underdog RTS & RPG mix directly against Oblivion (RPG) and a Star Wars RTS.
