The Verge reports that Steam will, in partnership with Lionsgate, bring over 100 movies to the platform.

The Hunger Games, Twilight, and more big Hollywood movies are now available on Steam, Valve's PC-gaming platform. Today Valve announced a deal with Lionsgate, which will bring more than 100 films to the service, and it includes some of Lionsgate's biggest franchises, like Saw, Crank, and Divergent (there's also the entire Leprechaun series, if that's your thing).

At present the titles are available as streaming rentals only, and not for download. You will, however, be able to watch them on all platforms Steam is available on, including PC, Mac, Linux, SteamOS, and even SteamVR. While Valve has previously dabbled in releasing films on the platform, including documentaries like Indie Game: The Movie, this marks the company's first big effort at expanding into traditional blockbuster movies.

Lionsgate says that the number of films available will expand as "the partnership continues to expand worldwide."
More information.

The Hunger Games, Twilight... Divergent?!
Crank? Someone who'll die unless has sex?
Does The Verge think only teenagers with no taste are using Steam?
I find this advertisment pathetic.

One thing, IMO not all THG movies were bad.

I think the initial selection of movies is circumstantial - it's just the deals they were able to make first. More interesting is the move itself, to become a player in streaming media. It explains why SteamOS has been silent on the obvious need to compete with other platforms by including Netflix, et al. This would seem to be a piece of Steam's long-term strategy, which they've probably been planning for a long time.

Crank isn't a movie about someone who needs sex to say alive (WTF?). It's an escapist action film with a ludicrous premise, but the protagonist pulls it off.

@Ripper
I'll agree that more streaming platforms, the better. But the problematic part I see there is deliberate selling of junk in general and rarely quality stuff. I don't care for Divergent nor will ever watch it. Give me something I can watch and rewatch indefinetly without feeling I'm wasing my time. How about advertising Casablanca?

@Screeg
Sorry man, but I think that my description is 100% correct. It's not my problem that instead of getting full feature porn on the premise, we got just a few seconds of it and the rest of the movie is trying to find something that can replace having sex. Which means, Crank IMO is an utter rubbish not worth anyone's time.

EDIT:
The link, I forgot the link (the offer depends on your area, many movies are not available worldwide):

They're entering a marketplace that already has a lot of competition, and supplying media that is now in its third or fourth run. I think they're going to find sales in that arena... challenging. Will they destroy their established business by going after new revenue sources? It's happened before.

I'll go ahead and reply "No" to that one. Steam is a juggernaut which as of today has zero real competition.

I can't imagine any string of decisions, however ridiculous (barring giving up distribution of games) that could lead Steam to fail in the next ten years.

Distributing movies will probably turn out the same as their initiative to distribute software, a failure. But so what? The reason they're turning to other sources is they already completely dominate their primary market.

I just wish they'd put 1% of one month's profit to fixing their abortion of an interface.

And how about another 1% for proper moderation of their forums and reviews?

Well, I liked divergent, hunger games and crank.

I suppose I'll take no taste teenager over high brow, jaded old man any day though.:p

As for Casablanca, I'm not sure steam has a big 70+ year old audience.;)

Just messin with ya Joxer, but really what do you expect, those are all popular movies nowadays wether you enjoy them or not.

I expect quality. Not quantity.
Or better said, I dream of - the reality is that everyone got obsessed with Candy Crush Saga.

And now Netflix will be offering partnering with Electronic Arts to bring you...Netflorigin.

I don't know but I find movies on steam weird. Probably just me, but I really am not into watching movies on my computer. Generally like games better. Of course, I guess you can Steam on your TV, so the cross platforming works there...

Yeah, I see this as part of Steam's strategy to conquer the living room. They have their eye on SteamOS boxes competing with future console generations.

I think the key thing to bear in mind about the Steam boxes is that Valve hasn't really made their play yet - they are slowly putting pieces in place, and building up their position.

Fixing the interface would be a one-time cost. Moderation of forums and reviews would be a MASSIVE, ongoing labor cost if it was done in any effective way. Anyway, isn't responsibility for game forums on game devs?

Another step towards world domination. And to think that people laugh about my opinion since HL2....

Consider yourself warned.
