The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

The Hobbit movies didn't do many things great, but that song is amazing to me.

Having just seen the making of segment for it, it's no wonder. They recorded 6 full takes of the song, and then they got plenty of variations of pieces of it.
It's so "engineered" that it could feel inauthentic. But it just sounds so good.

I did a deep dive into Randy Newman sometime last month, he's an extensive catalogue of great music.
I think this is the first I hear of him. I would assume not being from the states is not that particular of me, to not have heard of him?

This song is fun one. I enjoy listening to older music that I skipped over.

EDIT: Also funnily enough, I heard this song on the most recent Tim Dillon podcast. :D

I would think Randy Newman more of a world-wide artist, yet I could be wrong with assuming that. I've enjoyed his musical satire for decades, he's clever and an extremely talented composer, imo.

Randy Newman ? Didn't he write several Disney soundtracks, too ?

He very well might have, I'd says he's been rather prolific over the past four or five decades. I know I've heard several of his tunes in film scores, though I'll admit to not being a huge Disney fan.

In 2010 Peter Gabriel released the album "Scratch My Back" consisting of cover versions of different artists. The plan was to at the same also release "And I scratch yours" where said artists would record their own covers of Peter Gabriel songs. For several reasons (including some artists, I'm looking at you, mr. Bowie) not wanting to record a Gabriel song that didn't happen. The album was released in 2013, with other artists replacing the reluctant ones.

Here's Talking Heads, "Listening Wind":

And here's David Byrne's (extended) version of "I Don't Remember":

pibbuR who remembers the originals which can be found here and here

PS. Peter Gabriel is releasing a new album in 2023 called "I/O". DS.

Anything Peter Gabriel touches or performs is pure gold. As a mostly solo artist since his Genesis days, I'd rank him right up there with Bowie in just how purely prolific he's been.

I've been listening to some Frank and Nancy Sinatra this past week, excellent tunes for this time of year.

After posting that Smashing Pumpkins Christmas song (I was treated to the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special where it featured, and which was actually pretty fun) I wondered if they were not many folks' cup of tea. I'm very fond of them because their first album came out in the time of my rock music youth, and if you ever saw them live, they really could rock. That Corgan lad can play guitar.

I think Mayonaisse is my favourite Smashing Pumpkins tune, I believe it's off Siamese Dreams maybe? I was fortunate enough to see them countless times during the nineties, their in-person shows could wildly vary from amazing to....yeah, not so good. And if I ever hear that 1979 song again....well, I'd rather not. Holy moly did that song get way over-played at the time.
