AZALI - LOOKING GLASS LUMINESCENCE

Love AZALI's stuff. This one, Mechanical God and Show me the sky are probably my favorites from them.

I have The Mars Volta’s new album “Lucero sucio; Los ojos del vacio” on near constant repeat since its release last Friday.

You need a great sound system or headphones to enjoy it and it might take a few listens to grow on you. It’s a true vinyl-like experience as songs bleed into one another and some tracks seem like intros or bridges between two songs. Also has a pretty cool reprise track as well.

Fitz and the Tantrums, always loved the songs when I heard them on the radio or the airport. Been meaning forever to get The Walker and Handclap on my playlist, but the name of the group always left my brain when I was ready to do it at my PC. Finally dug those two gems up!

Dorsey doesn't get nearly the credit she should have for sustaining Bowie and his vision throughout the years. She's an amazing musician and vocalist in her own rights.

I really need to explore more of Miles Davis's discography. I've only listened to Kind of Blue (since it had song with Coltrane on it).
Any particular songs or albums you'd recommend?
Ooh always happy to talk about Miles :)

For starters Miles really has a series of distinct 'eras', perhaps moreso than any other artist in history:
  • Bebop - while it was Charlie 'Bird' Parker & Dizzy Gillespie at the center, by the time the WWII recording ban ended, Bird & Miles were recording together. From this era (pre-LP) I'd recommend "Charlie Parker the Savoy Sessions"
  • 'Cool Jazz' - a few years later he went in a completely opposite direction, and "The Complete Birth of the Cool" is an excellent record. (others from the session kept going with the style, Miles did not)
  • 'Hard Bop' - Miles had a 'First Great Quintet' in the mid 50s, regarded as some of the greatest jazz of the 50s, and included Coltrane. ‘Complete Prestige Recordings’ is a great collection with my faves Workin’, Steam’, Cookin’ and Relaxin’
  • Modal Jazz - basically Kind of Blue … he did other modal stuff (Milestones) but this was the pinnacle.
  • Collaboration with Gil Evans - between 1959 & 1963 Miles recorded a number of large band sessions that had unique jazz-classical fusions. Sketches of Spain is my fave, but Porgy & Bess, Miles Ahead and Quiet Nights are also excellent.
  • ‘Post Bop’ - Miles ‘Second Great Quintet’ from 1964 - 1969 is some of my favorite all-time jazz. Structured yet free, harmonically inventive, and just absolutely killer musicians who are all over 70s jazz & fusion - Wayne Shorter (Weather Report), Herbie Hancock (Headhunters, the song Rockit, etc), Ron Carter (about 3000 credits), and Tony Williams (Lifetime). My fave is ‘Miles Smiles’, but it is all good.
  • ‘Fusion’ - Miles album ‘Bitches Brew’ is just … absolutely groundbreaking. It brings everything together - jazz, rock, funk, free jazz, a double quintet (two drummers, two bass, etc). This period lasted from 1969 - 75, and I also love ‘On the Corner’ (super funky), Dark Magus (well, dark) and more.
  • ‘80s Pop-Jazz’ - Miles took several years off before returning to make what he called ‘social music’, including covers of ‘Time After Time’ and ‘Human Nature’ amongst others. Very divisive for fans, but ultimately better than people give it credit for being. I Like the albums Decoy and Tutu probably the most (and the 80s was when I got to see him play live several times so I am probably more forgiving!)
Overall if I was going to suggest a few starters that are not too far from ‘Kind of Blue:
  • Workin’ and Steamin’
  • Sketches of Spain
  • Live at the Plugged Nickel (from 1965)
• Bitches Brew

Totally agree about how Davis sort of set the standard for reinventing themselves as a musical artist. So many delicious flavours and all are worth sampling!

My favorite anime series ever will always be Basilisk, it basically amounts to Romeo & Juliet with Ninjas. I've been listening to the music tracks lately because they are that awesome.

This is as epic as it gets for the climactic duel between Gennosuke (the Romeo) and Tenzen (the Tybalt):

The ending credits are good too:
