The "I Just Bought" thread

That's another great film and the book is even better. I'll give it it's due, the adaptation to film was really good for No Country For Old Men.
I never got to reading the book. I've got a whole slew of them from McCarthy in my backlog. The only one I read, and twice, was The Road.
The film is fantastic. So intense all-throughout.

Since there's no sign of Europe getting the 4k version of No Country for Old Men, I went ahead and got the US version from amazon.
It doesn't say explicitly on it, but I hope it's true for this one as well that 4K blurays are region free.
All UHD 4k Blurays are region free. The UHD specification actually doesn't even have support for Regions! Yeah, they actually did something that was good for the consumer for a change! :)

A new KVM switch.

The olde one suddenly and unexpectedly spent some time flashing, before turning completely dark. refusing to switch between, even connect to my computers.

So I had to get a new one.

Configuring said device was a bit of a hassle. Initially the mouse stopped working after a couple of minutes. And (Stardock) multiplicity stopped reacting after a while. Turned connecting my wireless mouse dongle to the mouse input slot failed. However, I eventually discovered plugging it into the general USB slot of said KVM did the trick. And multiplicity is my friend again.

Switching PC's from the keyboard seems not to be working, but that wasn't entirely unexpected. It's a Logitech thing and Logitech doesn't officially support KVM's (at least didn't last time I checked). Same problem with the olde KVM. Other keyboard functions, like typing does work, fortunately. And there is an easily accessible button on the front of the KVMe.

I've got a KVM with a logitech keyboard and works fine. Shortcut for me is CTRL -> CTRL -> 1/2. It's a PWAY HDMI USB SWITCH

I've got a more improvised solution to an actual KVM. I've got two machines hooked into the same monitor, so I use the monitor inputs to control what screen I see.
And I've got a USB switch for managing which machine my keyboard and mouse controls. Not ideal, but works well enough. At least for the 1-2 times I need to switch during a day, during working hours.

In some cases it works, in others not. It's a bit unpredictable.

Edit: I've had Logitech keyboards that works fine, others that don't. Not a big problem, I'm used to using(!) the buttons.

A bit less practical when I have 4 machines connected. Besides I'm lazy.

pibbuR who actually makes the switches several times during the day.

I've tolerated my neighbors lights coming on at all hours and shining into my bedroom, often during the middle of the night. The sensors must be extra sensitive, autos trigger them, heck a stiff breeze will also and being in Florida, wind isn't something we're short on. I'd say at least once or twice a week, they get triggered.

So I invested in blackout drapes, and got them installed yesterday. That bedroom is now so dim during the daytime that you could develop film there, and I suspect that, come summer, it might also impact my energy bill in a positive fashion. I'm waiting each and every night now to see if the lights can actually even be seen now, it's only been one night yet the dark last night was bliss!

I'm completely and utterly under a "Dark Eye" spell, so I recently purchased the Aventuria Almanac to finally get to know the world, its cultures, geography, pantheon and deities, and so on. My entire exposure so far consisted of Realms of Arkania and Drakensang. I was never into P&P. Still am not. But I love reading about it.

So, the Alamanc, plus various Codexes for magic, divine stuff, heroes, and so on. All as PDF, which has the advantage that I can feed them to ChatGPT and let it cross reference them for my character creation musings.

I'm also reading a Dark Eye novel (Drei Nächte in Fasar - not sure if it's available in English).

And I started a new playthrough of Drakensang: The River of Time.

Trigger for all that was a crowdfunding project for a cooperative Aventuria 2.0 Card game that is still running this week:

Basically it lets you play a campaign with 1-6 players (there's also another solo box). So my BG3 buddies and I will probably be able to play this come Fall.

I have a new PC, it has a silly name "predator" and is Nvidia 4070super. It has the usual pretty lights inside but came with a choice of panels, see through or plain black. Obviously as I spend very little time sitting under my desk, I've gone with the plain black.

A new cat.
IMG_20250223_212220.jpg
Well, in principle we didn't buy it. Got it from one of the animal protection services, so it basically is free. However, they always get their cats neutered, and examined by a vet, and we pay for that (approximately 160USD). Many of the cats they have are caught in the wild, but this one came from a family who had to get rid of it due to allergy.

It's very cozy and not nervous. And very curious - when we got it and let it loose in the living room, unlike our previous cats, it didn't at first run and hide somewhere. In stead it started immediately to thoroughly examine the premises.

As you can see my keyboard required some examination. And it often spends time sitting on my desk, so I usually can operate my machines with just minor disturbances, and without bad feelings.
