The "I Just Bought" thread

A new cat.
View attachment 6126
Well, in principle we didn't by it. Got it from one of the animal protection services, so it basically is free. However, they always get their cats neutered, and examined by a vet, and we pay for that (approximately 160USD). Many of the cats they have are caught in the wild, but this one came from a family who had to get rid of it due to allergy.

It's very cozy and not nervous. And very curious - when we got it and let it loose in the living room, unlike our previous cats, it didn't at first run and hide somewhere. In stead it started immediately to thoroughly examine the premises.

As you can see my keyboard required some examination. And it often spends time sitting on my desk, so I usually can operate my machines with just minor disturbances, and without bad feelings.
He appears to be a fan of Starfield. ;)

I'm always fascinated by people that keep pets inside the house. While I love dogs, and somewhat like cats (though I prefer the bigger felines, which you can't even keep as pets) I can't imagine keeping them inside and letting them run rampant across everything.
Just the cabling alone I'd lose my mind if they'd chew or pull on them, and I'd constantly need to adjust/fix them. Nevermind my dislike of seeing animal hair everywhere. I can't imagine people that even let them sleep in their beds. And waking up with animal hair in my mouth. :ROFLMAO:

I've got a cat too and he's the easiest pet I could ever have imagined. All I do is provide food, water and shelter. The cat usually does what he wants during the day, which is mostly sleep on one of the couches or on the floor. We have a flap, so he goes out whenever he wants. He never broke anything (in 7 years) and enjoys my company when it's cold outside by just sitting on my lap for 30/40 mins if I'm watching tv. Every few days he likes to play too.

That's it. Oh, and he doesn't sleep on our bed. Keep bedroom doors closed for that :D

Cute cat! yeah, I can imagine it comes down to the personality and particulars of the pet in question. But I wouldn't want to experiment.
We had a very nice dog when I was a kid, but lived in a house back then. So the dog was outside in the yard.
I used to spend a decent amount of time with it, but the moment I got introduced to a PC she was left to my sister mostly.

I've had dogs, cats, ferrets, hamsters, horses, goats, cattle etc over the years, most were not indoor pets. I've not had any pets since the last one passed on, it hit too hard that time.

That really depends on the breed. I think most cats shed fur, but there are some dogs that shed very little or not at all. Typically, the breeds with shorter hair shed more.

It's a clever cat, this one (btw, she's female).

Cats are fairly easy pets to keep. Baseline is: Give them food, water, and show them where the litterbox is. Of course if they want human company, that's nice too.

This one is short haired, and doesn't leave much hair around (we've had long-hairs before). She's well behaved, doesn't chew on wires, and even scratches her claws only on devices reserved for said purpose. For some reason, she likes to chew plastic, so we have had to update part of internal service procedures (housekeeping) just a bit.

As shown elsewhere, she lets me operate my PC's.

I let her sleep in our bed if she wants to, no hairs in my mouth. NB! She's an in-door cat, so she doesn't bring in unwanted stuff in fur. I wouldn't let an out-door animal in my bed.

pibbuR who regrettably isn't allowed to call her "C", after the programming language.

PS. The animal protection service does name their cats, but in many cases the name is a bit too weird. This one they called "Cashew Nut". We will call her "Curie" after Marie. DS.

I was reaching a point where I had no more space to backup my GOG library so I upgraded my raid1 to 2x24TB HDDs.
They were decently expensive but this should hopefully keep me safe for a long while, going from 4TB to 24.
What will be a pain though is when these drives ultimately fail and I need to replace them. I can only replace them with something bigger, and these ones were already quite hard to find in my local market.
And it doesn't sound like the world state is going in a direction where it'll be easier to replace them.

The next thing that's a pita is the sync with the new drives. 5h per drive.
And that's just with the content that's already there. Copying the new content will be even more on top of that. o_O

Idk. Considering how fast tech evolves, and how long most HDDs last, I don't think it will be that difficult to find sufficient replacements when that day comes. (Assuming they don't fail early.)

I received a warning letter from Amazon stating that I was about to lose over ten bucks in kindle credit if I didn't spend it, so I looked around for a book or something to buy and landed a sweet deal with the Belgariad. This is a five volume set by Eddings that totally enthralled me in the eighties and when I left Maryland I gave all my signed hardbacks to my son. Needless to say, rebuying this was a no-brainer and cost me little, with the credits I had. I look forward to seeing if these books hit me the same way they did forty years ago. If so, I might have to re-get the Malloreon series as well.

I loved the Belgariad and follow-up Mallorean series by Eddings (and his wife). I was extremely shocked when I found out years later that he had been in incarcerated for a year on pretty serious child abuse charges (kid locked in cage in basement type stuff) in the 70's. I have not been to able view the novels the same since learning that.

Loved Eddings early work, but his later series were nothing more than a regurgitation of previous plots with the same character types and only the names being changed. His final books were almost vomit inducing!!

Agreed completely! As I said in my earlier post, I liked the Belgariad and Mallorean series' very much. I continued to read the Sparhawk series hoping for some of the same magic. And I did not like it for the reasons you cited. But I have an emotional connection to it all the same. When I was in University in the early 90's, I had a serious medical issue that put me in the hospital for several weeks. For reasons I still don't understand, my classmates bought me a copy of The Ruby Knight to read while I was hospital bound. I don't know how they even knew I was a fan of Eddings, as I never talked about it in the three years prior.

The entire class signed it. I still have it to this day. I disliked it and would never consider rereading it. But the signatures of my classmates...I reread those. Good times!!! Well, other than the being stuck in the hospital part and almost dying...that kind of sucked ;-).

Nod, I'd heard that about his later books so I never ventured into them. And aye, those child abuse charges were well hidden for years yet I remember hearing about them at some convention during the eighties, it was truly sobering to learn such a thing about someone who's talents I admired.

And after finishing the Belgariad and feeling the joy after those five books, I just ordered the remaining eight of the series so I'll have the full collection once again. I got a pretty good deal on them, a total of eight paperbacks for under thirty bucks with free shipping. Now I'll have all thirteen books of the collection!

I bought an authentic Australian cowboy hat at a local shop yesterday. I've not had this style of a hat since my riding days, which concluded over twenty years ago. Now when I'm out on the porch I'm styling and profiling!!

I've owned one for years, but then they're readily available everywhere down here. :)

Don't forget that you have to wear it on your feet instead of your head, since everything is upside down in Australia.
