Timothy Cain - Pros and Cons of GURPS as a CRPG

Well I think I'll take the word of a developer who used Gurps in Fallout over anyone else on this topic. As every rule-set has pros and cons when used in a video game.

Yes I enjoyed GURPS for a couple of PnP campaigns. It wasn't perfect, but as a design-your-own character system it was light years ahead of D&D. My all time favorite though was the HERO/Champions powers-based system. As a game design methodology it just made all kinds of sense. From that perspective I could see all the ways that D&D got it wrong.

I do not know much about GURPS, apart from Sir Terry Pratchett using it for designing Discworld adapations.

No cons for me at all, this would make for an exceptionally good computer gaming system.
nah the hp thing alone is a fun killer for me.

That would be even worse then souls like games.. THere you can at least get hit a few times before you drop for 100% to zero. Same problem in DnD ports at low levels it's horrible, Hp is so low... one crit and you are dead fighter and to top it off it's in a luck based system.
THat's why they add helmets that remove crits in that system when ported to video gaming.

I think that all table top systems need to be adopted and changed for PC if you want to have a slim chance of making it good.

In fact i have yet to see it done amazing. Closest anyone got so far is that it feels ok... But still at every corner as player you can feel and see that the system was never made for PC video games.

Same way you can feel when games are made for consoles...and that fucks up pc version hard.

THe second you start making a game on multiple platforms(same with games that have mutiplayer and singleplayer ) you have to make compromises and that's never good for end quality.

Gurps is great for players who have an idea of what kind of character they want to play, since you have all options open to you. I don't think its the best for new players, as they can be overwhelmed by the shear number of possibilities. In general there are players who love mechanics, and generally love systems where they have more choices and can tweak and customize characters. For those who come to the table for the first time, a streamlined and easily understandable system with fewer but clear choices are helpful. You can say what you want about D&D, but the Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian, Bard, and Druid, for example, evoke clear pictures in the heads of new players.

Nod yeah, you do need to have a very good idea of exactly what type of character you'd want to play, and leave nothing undone. Then again, to me that's a strength. A thorough explanation would likely help new people that are unfamiliar with the system.

I love Gurps-like systems. It's both more open and more "realistic" than D&D.

As a pen and paper system its biggest flaw is that the complexity makes it slow and hard to learn.

As a computer game system I will have to look at the video first to see what Tim thinks... :D

Agreed SveNitoR, though I don't think it's hard to learn, it is something you need to keep on top of, as I recall. And way more involved than the D&D systems that I'm familiar with.

GURPS was one of my favorite roleplaying systems(GURPS Fantasy was what we used for our campaign). I played it for years, beginning around 1990(we originally began with D&D back in 1980). I always hoped someday, someone would make a GURPS crpg or mmorpg. Was really disappointed when Interplay lost the GURPS license for Fallout.

I discovered I had played GURPs when I played Toon once. I had no idea it was GURPs till years later.
I haven't watched the video, but wasn't it Steve Jackson that abandoned Fallout and withdrew the rights for it on account that it was too violent?
