Timothy Cain - Temple Of Elemental Evil

Honestly I bought the game on it's release and never touched the game again.

Though it seems a few mods have improved and added content since then.

I loved the early parts (especially the fight with the giant frogs/toads) but once I got in the temple, I lost interest after an hour or so.

I found the game's help system very good back then. It really impressed me then. One day I'll have to dig the game out again. Plus the CO8 Mod for German players, it had this strange name ll .. I think this Mod was called "GULP" or so ...

I still hold a grudge against Atari that they didn't want a third patch for the non-English editions of the game, though. That will always leave a bad aftertaste to the distribution of this game - and a dark spot on the clothing of Infogrames/Atari.

DDO has a quest package of TOEE as well ... It is so much different than this version, though ... At least from what I can vaguely remember ...
Plus, the DDO version merely consists of the temple, not the town. Which had this *really strange* name ... Verbobonc, I think ... It always looked to me as if that was a mix with the words "verb" and "bonk", with "bonk" being the sound of something hitting something made of wood ...

I loved the whole thing and played it to the end, which I don't always do. It really captured that old-school D&D vibe, with bizarre characters and situations, and little corners to explore that had nothing to do with the main quest. Despite its technical flaws (which I luckily didn't suffer from much), I call it one of the best or at least most unique combinations of excellent RPG and excellent turn-based combat I've ever played. I also participated in the Circle of 8 community for a couple years, contributing 3D modeling for new levels.

Shocking disappointment that they couldn't make money on it.

Not shocking the release version was a mess, and the developer was already close to shutting down. It's the free mods and patches that made the game better to play.
