The Turn Based Lovers present games of their favourite genre:

Top 10 Classic Turn-Based RPGs and Strategy Games That Still Hold Up

Here’s a list of some RPG and strategy classics that still hold up perfectly today and that, in my opinion, absolutely deserve a spot in every genre fan’s library.

Before anyone charges in with a flaming keyboard and a Wikipedia link, let me say this loud and slow: these picks are in no special order. None. Nada. Zero. I didn’t rank them. I didn’t consult a committee of nerd monks hidden in a mountain temple.

These are simply my personal turn-based classics, the ones that still slap harder than my old math teacher when I forgot homework. You might have your own holy list. Fantastic. Go ahead and drop your favorites, your rants, your childhood trauma stories, whatever you want, in the comments.

We all bond over shared suffering anyway. But for now, let me walk you through ten timeless games that still hold up today, even if your GPU doesn’t understand why you’re booting half of them.

For me - that's a pretty fun list - I played through the majority of those. The ones I did not were : Persona, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. I have a hard time getting into JRPGs even though I have several others.

The ones I did play on the list are some of my most enjoyed games, like XCOM2.

The one thing I found odd about the list was that it grouped the Civ games but not the others.

I would also add many others, but my top TB games would be these:
Age of Decadence
Baldur's Gate 3
XCOM 2
Battle Brothers
Fallout
Fallout 2
Rogue Trader WH40K
Wildermyth
Colony Ship RPG
Expeditions: Vikings
King Arthur: A Knight's Tale
M&M7
Shadowrun Dragonfall
Shadowrun HK
Underrail
Wasteland 3

Well, that was disappointing. No tact or nuance in that list, seems like they just typed "top TB games" in Google and posted whatever the algorythm returned in a mash of "technically" turn-based games and most aren't even games where being TB is a key characteristic of the game, more like an accidental feature derived from the game's genre, much like saying that Fallout NV is a First-Person Shooter.

I like Pladio's list muuuuuch better, but then that's what lists are for, provoking clicks and discussion. So I hereby consider myself provoked, and am ready to move on with my day.

Yeah, amazing how low-effort and incoherent that list was.

I disagree, it's a nice list. Some unique choices. Forgot about Phantom Doctrine, will be buying, it's really cheap now.

The author clearly stated that it is the list of the ten turn based games they personally like most. So in my eyes the criticism misses the point completely.

I love those games on the list, which I have played (DOS 2, P 5 Royal and BG 3). So I expect the others are good ideas in order to find something fitting my taste. Since I am not much in strategy or X4 games, I will surely try Invisible Inc., Dragon Quest XI and FF 10. So for me the list was interesting and helpful.

Combat in Expeditions: Vikings is annoying. Special moves are crap and badly built. Loot is forgettable trash. Artifact forging system should NOT have been given into the hands of the player. I can now forge all equipment and only use found talismans.. :( Animations are poorly done.

I've played all but two of these, Invisible Inc and Phantom Doctrine. I agree with most of their choices, but any of these best of lists are subjective to the person compiling the list. I probably would have included the Shadowrun games and substituted Metaphor Refantazio for Persona 5. P5R was good, but high school was 50 years ago for me so I really can't relate to the school aspect of the game.
