The Strategy-RPG Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters has been released:

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters

Lead humanity's greatest weapon, the Grey Knights, against the corrupting forces of Chaos in this brutal and fast-paced turn-based tactical RPG. Root out and put a stop to an insidious plot to infect the galaxy with the Bloom, an intergalactic cosmic plague capable of rotting worlds into oblivion.

Armoured in faith, shielded by devotion, the Grey Knights' very existence is rooted in mystery, enforced with mind-wipes and executions. Experience life in the 41st millennium and follow the journey of these elite warriors in a narrative penned by acclaimed Black Library author, Aaron Dembski-Bowden.

SHAPE THE FATE OF THE GALAXY

Upgrade your base of operations, build new facilities, conduct research into arcane mysteries and engage in combat missions across multiple worlds to purge the spread. The Bloom corrupts without prejudice; your choices will affect which planets succumb... and survive.

FORGE YOUR CHAMPIONS

Command your own, personalised squad of Grey Knights; learn a range of diverse skills and psychic abilities, unlock powerful equipment and specialise your champions into four unique standard and advanced classes. Each of your warriors can be customised with voice, armour and facial options to make them your own.

PRECISION TARGETING

Grey Knights are an elite chapter of Space Marines and are not in the business of making mistakes or missing their shots. The Precision Targeting system puts you in control of your tactical decisions, allowing you to plan your strategy with confidence, whether by taking shots from afar with sure-fire accuracy, or dismembering and dismantling a foe in brutal melee combat!

MUTATING MONSTROSITIES AND THEIR MINIONS

As the Bloom corrupts worlds, environments will evolve and erupt with deadly hazards and minions, cultists and the infamous Death Guard Chaos Space Marines will mutate with pestilent boons and blessings, giving them new attacks and abilities. Adapt your tried and tested strategies to overcome unsurmountable odds against towering foes and their servants.

CINEMATIC SLAUGHTER

Charge headlong into fast-paced tactical combat. Eviscerate and execute enemies up close in gory displays of prowess, or strike from afar with blessed bullets and powerful psychic energies. Use the dynamically destructible environment to your advantage by tearing down pillars or slamming vehicles into unsuspecting enemies.

I've read some reviews and they are very positive (80+ scores on metacritic). Some call it one of the best games in its genre.

I've been waiting for a good Xcom style game (I keep passing on Phoenix Point as I remain unconvinced) AND I've been waiting for a good WH40K game. It seems like I may have checked both boxes with one game. Downloading now.

Looking forward to trying this game out! Been on my wishlist for awhile.
That said, I will probably just see how well it runs on my computer and check out the game in a quick go around, mainly just to get some first impressions of the game. And then wait for some patches, as I have plenty of games I'm currently playing right now.

It won't be the first good WH40K game, but you made the right move in passing on Phoenix Point (imo).

Let me know what you think after you've had some time with it. I like what I'm seeing, but I have too many unplayed games right now to justify purchasing yet another.

Not the first, no. Mechanicus was one of my favorites. But there are so many and it's mostly a sea of mediocrity.

I'll definitely share some impressions.

Downloaded but haven't played yet. Also hoping for a rare good Warhammer game, Mechanicus was ok, definitely the best of the bunch, but it still didn't quite do it for me. There was a turn based space marines vs. xenos game I played on my Ipad which I liked a lot, but it definitely had it's issues as well.

I played for 3 hours yesterday, and saw enough to give some early impressions, I think.

Unsurprisingly, it is highly reminiscent of X-Com in many ways. Though I haven't played it, I know enough about the changes in Gears Tactics to say that it also borrows a lot from that game: the more durable soldiers, the ability to generate more action points during the round, etc.

I have no idea how much the maps vary as the game goes along, but the maps I've seen are interestingly laid out, with lots of details, including interactive ones. You can push over pillars onto enemies sometimes, for example, and the entire environment is highly destructible. There are more skill upgrades per marine than there are per soldier in X-Com, and it seems like there will be some fun tactical possibilities with the different weapons and abilities. In one of my first battles, I teleported out of a suppression zone to flank and kill a cultist.

As in X-Com, you immediately have to start prioritizing between multiple avenues of base (ship) upgrade and research, and there is a ticking clock (The Bloom) that gives you the sense that you are always running out of time, and you can never save everyone/do everything.

You'll spend most of your time on battlefields, of course, but there is definitely a story, told through cut scenes and conversations with your crew. I think they pretty much nail the WH40K tone with the voice acting and dialogue. It's dramatic, with plenty of technobabble as in all WH40K games, but I would say it's above average quality as WH40K game dialogue goes. The barks are good, too. I'm looking forward to hearing more of the enemy ones.

Graphically, it's a mixed bag. Where it matters, in the fights, it's perfectly adequate. The explosions and ability fx and such look good, as do the models. For some reason, the Inquisitor character looks especially bad/weird (in cutscenes)...she reminds me of Final Fantasy VII characters. The original ones. I like the soundtrack so far, and the sound effects for the boom and rattle of gunfire and such are good.

It's living up to its billing for me, and I do recommend it for fans of the genre.

Btw, I also got Citizen Sleeper yesterday, which is fascinating. Good day for games.

So I played the first scenario, which is a tutorial. I thought it seems like a pretty cool game, with good, brutal style combat, and definitely lots of Warhammer 40k lore is present.

To a surprising degree, even. The Lore is definitely part of the main game focus as well. I admit to being a huge Warhammer fantasy fan, but the Warhammer 40k, not so much. But unfortunately, they "retired" the Warhammer fantasy universe, well, to a certain degree.

But I really like the Chaos faction in Warhammer fantasy, and the Chaos faction is here as the main enemy focus, albeit the slightly altered Warhammer 40k version.

That said, if you don't like a hardcore science fiction type setting, you won't like this game probably. And the Warhammer 40k is done to such a degree that the goofiness of it does become apparent. They have these words etched into their huge armor sets, for example, like "Righteousness" and "Wrath", so it is a bit silly. I admit to having a chuckle when I saw that.

And the characters are all super heroic paladin-like, and the Chaos is super evil and dark. This is definitely a Good vs Evil type game, lol, in a very straightforward manner.

But all that aside, (which really boils down to a matter of taste) I think the rpg tactics system looks solid, and I like the various abilities and tactics you can do. There is a suprising wide range of things you can do during the battles, and it does seem to have quite a bit of complexity designed into it.

If you are a big fan of the Warhammer 40k universe, I can see you loving this game and it being a big hit. I know they have a hardcore fanbase because I have seen them in game stores playing with those Warhammer 40k miniatures.
They would probably go crazy over this game, heh.

Addendum, re: how well it runs.

Better than X-Com 2 does for me, actually. I get some severe frame rate drops at the beginnings of cutscenes sometimes, but overall it's fine, and during battles I have no issues at all. I have the graphics settings mostly on high, except for shadows on medium and anti-aliasing turned off (I rarely see the point of anti-aliasing in any game; it just makes things look blurry). Considering I have only an AMD FX-8350 processor and an AMD RX480 graphics card, that's pretty good.

I'm not sure what's canon, but in past games at least I've gotten more of a morally grey vibe from the space marines. They always seemed like they would be just as happy burning down a town for heresy as fighting space orcs.

They would, but that's not being morally grey, that's being morally absolute. For space marines (at least some chapters; they're not all the same), if chaos has spread past the point of containment in a town (more likely a planet), they won't hesitate to destroy it, along with innocents, because they weigh that cost versus the higher cost of lives lost if they allow it to spread. "The lives of the many outweigh the lives of the few" may as well be their credo.

It's worth keeping in mind that in the world of WH40K, heresy is a real thing. It's not a Salem witch trials situation. Demons ARE actually being worshipped.

Well I meant more that their actions and beliefs are meant to be viewed as more morally gray to the readers/gamers. They obviously view themselves as infallible divine agents and believe that everything they are doing is unquestionable, but depending on where you go with that, that can be make them all the more villainous themselves. I've definitely seen writers portray them as superstitious and dogmatic fanatics who we only view as heroes because the people they are fighting are worse. But as you say, the stakes are really high and traditional morality may not apply as well in this world.
