PC Gamer reports that Wartales has been sold 600.000 times:

Mercenary RPG Wartales has sold over 600,000 copies

Wartales, Shiro Games' turn-based tactics RPG in which you lead a mercenary company in a low-fantasy world plagued by banditry, wolves, and, well, plague, is so gritty you could use it to strip paint. The tough early game, in which you'll march down Struggle Street trying to earn enough food to keep your employees alive and enough cash to pay them, might be off-putting to some. That hasn't stopped it from winning fans, with Shiro boasting that it's sold more than 600,000 copies so far and been wishlisted one million times.

Wartales is doing well with players on Steam, who've given it a user rating of 91% positive over more than 13,000 reviews. Our own Rick Lane gave it a score of 83 in his Wartales review, praising its "rich and granular mechanical toybox" as well as its potential for character-driven storytelling.

I have been playing this one on and off. The turn-based combat gets a bit repetitive, but the general game mechanics are quite fun. Reminds me a bit of Battle Brothers, but a bit less harsh in general, and I'm glad they are doing well with sales.

I enjoyed it for two régions but then found some of the elements a bit lacklustre.
The story éléments aren't good enough to carry it in my opinion. The combat isn't as good as other turn-based games. Progression after level 6 is very very slow making the game feel slow too.

Overall its a fun game but it feels like they've tried too much and not hit greatness in any of the areas.

I would recommend Battle Brothers over this for the combat certainly.

It is a very solid TBS if you love them, balance needs to be patched. Lot's of different game mechanics, more than Battle Brothers. But Battle Brothers does everything that they have in common much better.

It's not perfect. Performance issues. Gets super grindy after level 7. But if you like the gameplay loop, why not?

I finished with my party at level 9, getting only 40-60 xp per battle is crap considering you need more than 5k xp for a level later on. Last area gives level 11 stuff so its pretty useless unless you grind.

Making that practice dummy in your camp can get a few mercs around 200xp when the party rests—helped with the grinding a bit. I've played 101 hours and my characters are lvl 9 and in the capital.

I don't mind the slow lvling but it's almost too slow for me, so I know others will be annoyed by it. I love the game but I think they need to add a few more smithing recipes. All my characters are wearing the same armor. Just light, medium, and heavy versions.

I really enjoy the cooking options and the recipes. They need to add another type of creature to battle at higher levels. I don't mind fighting bandits mostly but you can add some type of orc or goblin-like creature. Just find something that is lore friendly for their world. That's why I would love a D&D game like Wartales. So many awesome creatures you could battle.

Are the Battle Brothers guys jealous? Disheartened? Or did they sell gazillions as well?

Steam stats are estimating just under 400k units for BB. BB also has a bunch of DLC/Supporter packs and GoG sales etc. No idea how much both cost to develop but I imagine both studios would be quite happy with the outcome!

it seems to me you can go with just 4 guys in Wartales, while in BB you quickly have over 20 guys in team, add to that even bigger opponent's army and it drags

The difficulty scales partially on party numbers in Battle Brothers.... So if you tend to keep recruiting you probably are sometimes making your life harder ;)

The disappointing thing about Wartales is that there has been no communication with the players after the release. The game was released on April 12 and only one hotfix has been released. There has been no communication about any future updates or fixes.

Shiro Games released a survey but it was a pretty generic one. There are many minor fixes and quality-of-life improvements that need to be made. The exp you need after level 8 is crazy in this game and I have been leveling up using my practice dummy in the camp mostly. Just bad game design.

Wartales badly needs more variety in weapons and armor and blacksmithing recipes. It could also use a greater variety of creatures to battle. 600,000 copies sold and this is how you celebrate? Great game but I don't enjoy being treated like a sucker by a company. I was going to gift a copy to a few more friends and buy another one on GoG but Shiro Games will not get any more of my cash until they stop being clowns.
