Henriquejr spotted a new community update for Wartales:

Community Update #6 Out now!

Featuring community requests, new content, reworked features and more!

Attention mercenaries!

Community Update #6 is here! You might be a little confused about this surprise update, but fear not, as it brings some much needed balancing to the game, alongside some other smaller changes.

As usual, the changes are based on community feedback/sentiments, read on to find out more...

Choose your destiny

We have redesigned the interface at the beginning of the game!
We wanted to rework it and make it more aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, we have revamped the layout so that the choices at the beginning of the game are clearer and more obvious.
For example, few players knew that it was possible to play without scaling. In fact, the exploration mode now has its own interface. Between adaptive exploration (scaling) and zoned exploration (similar to more classic RPGs), the choice is yours!

  • The destiny choices have been rebalanced.
  • Each setting option now has more information
Revamped Difficulty

Wartales is a demanding game. From the very first minute, your mercenary troop is dropped into a wild and violent world where wolves and bandits are out to get you.

Your feedback tends to show that the difficulty decreases over time. Indeed, mercenaries gain power quickly by accumulating powerful skills and ways to generate Valour points, thus allowing for new possibilities to defeat your enemies. In doing so, the fragile assassin who had to be cleverly placed could, after certain levels, wander through the enemy ranks and annihilate everything.

We are convinced that the notion of challenge is part of the Wartales DNA.
Therefore this patch seeks to:

  1. Make the easy mode less punishing and the hard mode more challenging
  2. Not alter the beginning of the game/new game experience
  3. Reinvigorate the late game with some added challenge

I will finally start playing next week with the full release. I'm surprised I was able to hold off playing during EA. My willpower when it comes to computer games is like a 7-year-old at a toy store.

My recommendation wait for more patches as this update caused problems.

hope this won't be all we get with 1.0, would be disappointing.

The update for the 1.0 release is pretty big if you look at the roadmap. I think they are adding the last high-level zone with some other improvements like a level cap increase.
I think Couch is right, I will wait for one or two patches after the 1.0 release.

You're disappointed why? How many hours of playtime is there so far?

i'd say 60ish right now but it all comes to your expectations. Game claim to be a sanbox (it is only partially) and if you play it with mount & blade / battle brothers in mind you might expect more, if you play it how some adventure/sandbox hybrid then you could be happy with what is already there.
There are sandbox elements , some roaming units and a very basic trade, but map is handwritten and story and point of interests too, so yeah you can enjooy it for what it is.

I have never played Mount & Blade or Battle Brothers. Are those the current 'gold standard' sandbox games? Is there a clear RPGWatch community favorite between the two? Mount & Blade II appears to be the one most recently released. Might try to play one of them while I want for this game to 'season' post final release.

mount & blade 2 isn't that great tbh, i don't want to be the one that made you buy it.
I don't know if those are golden standards but sure are "real" sandbox.

Battle Brothers is one of the greatest games of all time. In my humble opinion.

The original Mount & Blade (haven't played newer ones yet) was really unique and had addictive gameplay. That overhead game world is similar to what you have in Wartales. Along with the aforementioned Northgard, the developer also made Dune Spice Wars (or still making, I think it's ea). I've played all three and there are good qualities to them all. However I got burnt out on Wartales, too many unfair events made it too hard to progress, and I'm sure I was on easy mode. I know they said that part will be easier now, but I don't think it's worth the time investment again to find out.

I tried Wartales just last month and I have a hard time describing why it's not as "fun" as Battle Brothers was to me.
It has lots of elements I am meant to enjoy but overall just feels lesser.
