What I've Been Watching: The Catch-All Film Thread

He's probably a lot better than I give him credit for, but his style just never really appealed with me. Off the top of my head, the only movies I really liked with him were Con Air and Color Out of Space.
I also remember liking him in Lord of War, Adaptation, Kick-Ass, Face-Off and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Pig is another one I hear is good, but I never got to it.
Some of his roles are more serious than others, but he's always been charismatic and likeable. And with a large range.
From what I remember reading, the vast amount of shit films he's been a part of are basically just an attempt to speedrun making a lot of money to pay his IRS debts?

See, I don't find him charismatic or particularly likeable. He does have decent range though, I'll give him that. He's more talented than someone like Ryan Reynolds who is another actor that's way more popular than I can understand.

Finally got around to watching Mickey 17, the latest film from Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, Parasite, etc). Interesting premise, somewhat strange execution. There's some slight social commentary, but mostly it felt like an awkward character study with a scifi twist. Robert Pattinson did a good job in effectively portraying two completely different demeanors.

6/10.

I think Cage is immensely capable and talented. He can hit drama out the park when he has the right role, script, director, etc. 8MM is one of my favorite movies.

And again with the right role, script, director, etc. he can deliver the ham and cheese in a way that works too. Raising Arizona and Faceoff stick out to me as examples of the latter.

But I also agree he does a lot of trash. And I suspect a lot of that trash was delivered when he'd do any and all roles he could to dig himself out of his tax troubles. The Wicker Man remake was a horrible abortion!

Totally agree about Cage and your thoughts on 8MM, which is an excellent film. And I'm sure some of Cage's projects are truly picked for the paycheck, I suppose many actors do the same thing.

Along the way, I watched Until Dark recently. Ok I guess, not great either.

I didn't realize until the ending credits that it was Peter Stormare who was playing the villain.

Not saying it to be mean, but the guy does have a face that screams "evil creep". I wonder what it may have done for his self-esteem at times, but it did lead to a niche career in films like 8MM and Fargo and so on.

I wasn't too excited about an Elden Ring movie, but them mentioning A24 has just made me slightly more hopeful.
It's going to have a whopping 23 lines of dialogue. ;)

Seriously though, it should be interesting to see how they translate a FromSoft game to film considering how little speech there is in their games.

Yeah. And there's very little actual story in these games. You're more like a traveler exploring remnants of past civilizations in post-apocalyptic lands.
Any story in there is more like the stuff of myth and legend. So it'll also be curious what story they can write into that setting.
But I have a feeling it really won't work. They'll need to take a very different approach. Maybe something like a Terrence Malick film could work, with it being more about mood and atmosphere. Otherwise I'm really skeptical.

Yesterday I watched Alien: Romulus with friends. We had very low expectations and were pleasantly surprised. The film captures the serie's mood quite well, with lots of small references and nods to the older movies. Even the cast of teenagers wasn't as annoying as we had feared. Sure, there are quite a few plotholes but we didn't mind them.
Re-using the final fight of the first movie was a bold move, but worked quite well as well, though the hybrid wasn't anywhere near as fearsome as a proper alien.

After thinking about the film Pig recently, I watched the first hour last night and plan on finishing tonight or sometime this week. I'd forgotten how good a film this is, though it's only maybe four or five years old.

I really didn't like Romulus when I saw it, but in hindsight it wasn't terrible. I do wish they had been a little more creative towards the end though instead of just aping past films. I could have done with less fan service as well.

Bring Her Back was really freaky, in a good way. The Aussies can really make quality horror when they put their minds to it. I have fond memories of Talk To Me when I say that.

Mission Impossible was amazing too, a really good way to wrap things up imho. The first movie will always be my favorite. Partly because it took fans' expectations from the TV series and smashed them all over the floor with a sledgehammer by taking an iconic and beloved character in Phelps and making him a loathsome traitorous villain. But they did it in a way that worked, and set up the future franchise to come. First movie was my favorite, but overall Solomon Lane will always be my favorite villain of the franchise. Four Eyes Zero Soul Evil Genius Chessmaster, if any human villain approached the sheer evil and intellect of The Entity, it was Lane.

Sean Harris used to be a go to guy for playing creepy villains, had the face for it. But haven't seen him in anything lately. Any idea what's up with him?

I'll watch anything from Gillermo del Toro. Except that Pinocchio movie. Still waiting for him to do a movie based in the Cthulhu mythos; seems like it'd be perfect match.

I'm starting to wonder how many times they can remake this film. It does look good though.
Talking about Frank i finally saw poor thing; should have liked it - like most (but not all) of emma stone movie; and it has one scene that is hard to forget but alas i just as well as skipped it; just didn't really enjoy it much.

They're not wasting any time making a sequel to Alien: Romulus. It's apparently already in pre-production and starts shooting in October.
