In an older video Michael Snow asks the question if Wizardry 8 is the greatest RPG ever made?

Wizardry 8 The Greatest RPG Ever Made?

This is the excessively long video I made to give my thoughts on Wizardry 8 a magnificent classic video game. I know this video is crazy long but I needed this much time to talk about such a great game (and I didn't even succeed in mentioning everything I wanted to.)
More information.

I don't know about being the greatest RPG ever, but it's a damn good one. It's still the only Wizardry game I managed to play to completion, and it's my favorite blobber.

This is a great game, one of my preferred ones which I didn't finish only because the insane amount of quick respawns. I even tried to find a mod which would tone this down but I got no luck.

Even so, I always keep promising myself to return to it someday. Who knows..

I finished the first Wizardry back in like 1983. No saves except at the inn. If you died you died. I still remember the two vampire lords that fought with Werdna.

Yeah, "GREATER RPG EVERRR" is a tall order, but it's up there. Top 10 for sure. The video definitely makes me want to reinstall, verbosity aside ;)

As an old guy that was part of the QA team, I'd like to say it was, but not really. It was a very good rpg, but I wouldn't put it in my top 10. Still they had created such an interesting universe with the last few games that I really wish it had continued on instead of turning into an unrelated dungeon crawl.
EDIT: After reading some of the comments, I just want to throw out there that the combats, especially the early ones and the insane respawn was something myself and other testers begged them to change before release. Always listen to your QA team, game devs. This is both short and long term proof. :)

Not as good as Wiz 6. I did enjoy 8 more than 7 though. I wouldn't call any the greatest RPG ever made as well.

Best? No, that's Gothic 2. Top five? Yeah, at least.

I love Wiz8, beat it twice, but it's highly imbalanced and doesn't allow for much wiggle room. Like my first successful party was my Wiz 7 party. Dwarf Lord, Felpurr Sam, Dwarf Valk, Halfling Ninja, Dracon Mage and Rawulf Priest. God did I have one heck of a time with them, even on normal. To remedy this on my 2nd trip, I just had 3 fighters in constant berserk mode up from dual wielding swords. I cut through the entire game that way.

I just feel like the game is unbalanced. The heavy spawns, the auto-level scaling, it's possible to counteract it to some degree with party composition, but it's still rough. I probably just suck since I've seen people solo it with faerie ninjas, so....

I'm not a big blobber guy (don't hate them or anything, just not big on them), and I have no nostalgic fondness for Wizardry in general, but there is just something about Wizardry 8. I'd go so far as to say there's some true inspiration, some genius in its world and characters and the way it's all paced and put together. I don't know where I'd rank it, but it would be in there somewhere, and for its time it was exceptional.

Loved it - except for the autolevelling of monsters, which broke it for me. I never finished it because of that.

The monster scaling mechanism in Wiz 8 isn't too bad. Monsters never scale down and they do have an upper limit based on the area you are in. Also rather than just having more hp/doing more damage they actually evolve into more powerful enemies i.e. larger rats, different names and monsters with classes move to more advanced classes like Samurai/Ninja etc.

But still - I do kind of agree with you a bit - they could of done it in a better way. Certain party compositions can make the game more difficult because of this i.e. a mix of faster leveling classes and slower leveling classes.

An hour and 17 minutes to explore if Wiz8 is the best ever???

It was good but it was nowhere near that good. I didn't even finish the thing when I played it back around when it came out.

Not the greatest RPG ever made, but the greatest party based blobber RPG ever made IMHO.
