Aeolwyn's Legacy - Cancelled

by Hiddenx, 18:02

Former Might and Magic Developer Tim Lang announced today, that the development of Aeolwyns Legacy will not be continued. The full news can be found on discord - here's a quote:

Development for Aeolwyns Legacy stopped

Hello, @everyone. For those who don't immediately recognize my handle, I'm Tim, the project lead of Aeolwyn's Legacy and former designer at New World Computing. After a lot of thought and soul searching, I've decided, with regret to retire from active game development. I've found that over the years I've lost the passion for developing games that I used to have. I kept thinking it was temporary and it would come back, but sadly, I just haven't been able to get excited about making games (or playing them in most instances). I guess that's life when you get older.

Unfortunately, this also means that effective immediately development on Aeolwyn's Legacy is suspended, most likely permanently. After 6 years of hard work, it's a sad thing to let go, but as a game it's just too big for me and the team to manage.

I've already discussed this with the team and while they're sad to see AL get abandoned, they are not done with game development. @Thorneto is going to be adapting a bunch of the code from AL and continue to work on a project he started before he joined AL. Keep an eye out for that.

[...]

Thanks Kordanor!

Aeolwyn's Legacy - Demo Update & Steam Early Access

by Silver, 08:44

The latest update for Aeolwyn's Legacy announces an upcoming move to Steam Early Access and that a big update of the demo is being worked on.

Aeolwyn's Legacy update #13

It's been a while since our last update, but we've been busy working on the final touches of the last big update of the demo before moving on to the production of Chapter 1!

There's a lot of new features and bug fixes with the last big version of the demo (there may be a few small bug-fix updates). It's not quite there yet as a few bugs keep popping their heads up during testing. Once those are quashed, it'll be going up on our itch.io site.

We're pretty excited about starting on Chapter 1 finally. This means new levels, new cities, and a whole lot more! It's going to be a lot of work, but this means it'll stop being a demo and start being a game!

When we think it's ready, we will be saying goodbye to itch.io (though the demo will still live there), and say hello to Steam Early Access (which offers us and you a lot more flexibility with updates and distribution.

If you're looking for more regular updates and other comments on the process and production of Aeolwyn's Legacy, head over to our Discord. It's a fun place to be!

And if you haven't played the old one yet, get the demo here!

Until next time....

Aeolwyn's Legacy - Tim Lang Interview with Celestial Heavens & Status Update

by Silver, 23:13

Tim Lang was interviewed by Celestial Heavens last month about Aeolwyn's Legacy. Additionally the latest update details current progress on the game.

loading...

Hello everyone! Over the weekend, Tim sat down with Celestial Heavens to talk about Aeolwyn's Legacy, his time working on New World Computing, and hockey!

loading...

In this segment we drill down into Might and Magic VI, VII, VIII and even IX! And Tim delves deep into his long lost plans for the never-released Might and Magic X! (Not to be confused with Might and Magic X:Legacy)

Tune in, it's sure to be a fun ride!

Aeolwyn's Legacy update: One Year Later

It's been a year since we released our first video and announced Aeolwyn's Legacy to the world! A lot has happened, so I thought we could take a look back today.

The above screenshot is where AL started - as a third-person action RPG. From there it went to a turn-based 2D game in the vein of Ultima 4 or Questron and looked like the screenshot below:

And then a revelation!

Finally it ended up as a first-person blobber. Yay! But the UI and various other things made it kind of ugly, so I spent a lot of time this year revamping the UI and generally making things look better!

And here's how it's looking today. I'm pretty happy with how it looks, but that's not all that's changed. There's been a lot of bug fixing and work on the combat system, a streaming outdoor, and lots of general polishing.

I had hoped to have Chapter 1 out by now, but with all the revamping and polishing I've had to push that until after Demo v3 has been completed. It's pretty close, but there's still some bugs and polishing to finish up with.

I can't tell you much about Chapter 1, but I can tell you it's titled 'The Tambryne Letter" and will finally take you out of Ableton and to your first large city!

I'm pretty excited about where the game is headed, and I hope you are too!

See you in the next update!

Aeolwyn's Legacy - Progress Update & New Demo

by Silver, 00:43

A recent update for Aeolwyn's Legacy announces an updated demo and discusses progress made so far. Additionally it seems that the developer has changed its name from Brrapp Games to Dungeonbyte.

Another Aeolwyn's Legacy update

It's been a while since our last update, so I thought I'd let you know a few things that are happening!

There's a new build of the demo up that fixes some bugs. It will probably be the last of the demo build for a while as I'm building out the world terrain for Chapter One! Here's a preview video: (don't mind getting stuck on the roof of the tavern!

There's some pretty exciting stuff about the new world map. Firstly, it's huge. the full size is 16km x 8km. Secondly, it will be a seamless world. You'll be able to walk from one end of the world to the other without a single level load (though you may get a hiccup once in a while). I didn't think I was going to be able to support that, but I've got some tech from Procedural Worlds that's working great.

You won't be able to hike the world from the get-go because there won't be anything there yet! I'm focusing on the Tambryne area first, which includes the demo town of Ableton, the farming (or fishing) village of Graslan, the fort at Cape Bryne, and the region's capital city of Tambryne. There will also be some procedurally generated villages with side quests just as soon as I figure out how to get that working.

You might notice in the demo that the portraits are weird. I've been experimenting with 3D character portraits, but have been running into some difficulty that I'm still working out. I haven't fixed it so you can see the difference between the 2D and 3D portraits. If you've got an opinion, let me know!

Another bit of news is that I moved the location of the demo build from Amazon's AWS to itch.io. Mainly because it's free for me to host (unlike AWS), and I can now accept donations for the project. Eventually I'll start to charge a small amount for it as it gets closer to the beta for Chapter 1. After that, I have plans to put it on Steam Early Access, but it probably won't be leaving itch.io.

Here's the link: https://dungeonbyte.itch.io/aeolwyns-legacy

And as always, if you haven't headed over to Discord, that's where we do most of our development chant these days!

Some good stuff happening!

Toodles for now!

Aeolwyn's Legacy update

November 28, 2019 | Tim

Hello again!

I promise I haven't forgot about you.

I've been busy working on things and things, and wanted to give you guys an update on what's been going on since the Aeolwyn's Legacy announcement!

Based on some of the feedback I got from the demo, I decided to take the time and upgrade some of the art and UI that had been temporary while I worked on the game systems.  A lot of people thought it looked fine, but I thought it could use an upgrade.  So I've been slowly working on a new UI.  Here's a mockup of what it looks like:

I think it's looking pretty good.

I also have been getting a fair amount of questions about the game, the story, release dates, etc so I put together a FAQ and put it on the game's main page.  It's all the way at the bottom.  Check it out!

That's about all the updates for now!  toodles!
