ADOM - Lots of New Features

by Silver, 11:19

Ancient Domains of Mystery has released a host of new features wrapping up its crowdfunding campaign goals from 2012.

ADOM 3.0.5 now public: The most complete ADOM ever

23 DECEMBER - THECREATOR
Hi everyone!

One day before Christmas we are very proud to release ADOM 3.0.5 to the general Steam public. ADOM 3.0.5 is the culmination of the crowdfunding campaign started in 2012 (http://www.indiegogo.com/resurrect-adom-development).

ADOM 3.0.5 consists of a spectacular set of features including:

  • extensive character generation options including 12 races and 22 classes, point-based atttribute generation and a lot more,
  • extensive game customization options (permadeath versus save & load, monster lethality, treasure rates, etc.) to truly create your preferred way of playing ADOM,
  • several hundred dungeon levels to explore,
  • more than three dozen specific quests during the main quest,
  • various play modes (tutorial, standard, roguelike, challenge, network, customized, etc.),
  • 140 exciting unique artifacts,
  • 480 monsters, 896 base items, 47 spells, 41 skills, 100 talents,
  • a large number of (fair and meaningful) achievements,
  • a global highscore server at http://rogueleague.org (see http://rogueleague.org/register to learn how to register),
  • a simple and easy to use UI with extensive tooltips, hints and a detailed tutorial mode.
  • and so much more.

Please note that this will not end ADOM development. Quite to the contrary we have an almost infinite amount of ideas and improvements to continue ADOM development. As a consequence you can expect new releases for years to come. Nonetheless we are very proud about finally finishing our 2012 crowdfunding campaign.

We wish you a Merry Christmas. And now go and enjoy ADOM - the current sale is the best you can get, so buy some more ADOM codes as Christmas gifts and give them to your friends and loved ones :-) !

ADOM - UI Improvements

by Silver, 15:48

Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) has had a great deal of work put into UI improvements.

Another week of UI work

9 JULY - THECREATOR
Hi everyone!

After being a bit spammy last week I'm trying to keep it to weekly updates here. The past week again saw a lot of work on improving the UI and starting two days ago I'm now playing my own game mouse-only (although I love the keyboard controls) in order to learn more about what actually is missing for a great mouse-based UI.

Soon we'll also run more supervised test games with ADOM newbies to learn more about what works and what doesn't in the UI.

This blog post summarizes the latest advances: http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2017/07/a-week-of-work-on-adom-ui.html

If you have more wishes or ideas regarding improvements for the UI/UX please submit them _now_ at http://www.adom.de/bugs - it's the perfect time as we really want to improve on this for the next release.

Thanks & stay tuned for the next update!

ADOM - Review @ Gameindustry

by Hiddenx, 01:11

Gameindustry reviewed the rogue-like Ancient Domains of Mystery:

Re-loving Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM)

ADOM, or Ancient Domains of Mystery, has somewhat of a following since its original release in 1994. Even as far as roguelike games go, ADOM has quite the reputation as being a difficult game. You play as a warrior who must fight against the forces of chaos, but only if you packed enough sandwiches that you don’t have to eat random animals. Eating innocent creatures causes your character to feel guilty, guilt leads to your character being more easily corrupted which winds up causing your character to join the forces of chaos after some time, tantamount to a game over. See? This is why you’re always told not to forget your lunch.

[...]

So, ADOM is a tough, tough game. Some people who have been playing every so often for over a decade may yet to have seen the endings, yet they keep returning because ADOM is an incredibly rich and complex experience. Players who need a fancy user interface or intuitive keybindings may dislike ADOM greatly, while those who prefer hard-as-nails RPG experiences may enjoy ADOM thoroughly and not put it down for an extremely long time. This game is an acquired taste – the beginning of the game, the first village and its surrounding area, is known for being quite harsh and that is unchanged even in this release. Those willing to stick with the game, even after a few unlikely deaths, will undoubtedly discover a deep roguelike experience underneath the paperdoll surface (or letter surface, should you decide to go with the old school ASCII visuals).

ADOM - Is Coming to Steam: November 16

by Hiddenx, 20:10

The rogue-like ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) will be released on Steam tomorrow:

ABOUT ADOM

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) is one of the most successful roguelike games ever created, boasting a brilliant mix of story, RPG, exploration, and intensely strategic and flexible combat. The Steam version adds various Deluxe features like achievements, difficulty level customization and various play modes (e.g. a story mode allowing to save and restore games, a weekly challenge game, an exploration mode and more). ADOM has been in development since 1994. In 2012 its development was revitalized with an immensely successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, now allowing us to offer ADOM both with ASCII and graphical modes enabling you to choose freely.

ADOM is primarily known for being the first roguelike to include vibrant towns, NPC dialog, and quests, but it offers more than just a rich story line in a complex fantasy world:
  • a huge game world with hundreds of locations such as towns, randomized dungeons, elemental temples, graveyards, ancient ruins, towers and other secrets
  • loads of races (dwarves, drakelings, mist elves, hurthlings, orcs, trolls, ratlings and many others) and even more classes (fighters, elementalists, assassins, chaos knights, duelists and much more) allowing for infinite play styles
  • hundreds of monsters and items, many with enhanced random features
  • a corruption system forcing you to balance lust for power with fear of damnation (corruptions slowly transform you into a vile monster but at the same time grant inhuman benefits - most of the time)
  • spells, prayers, mindcraft, alchemy, crafting and more
  • dozens of quests and branching story lines
  • numerous wildly different endings that might alter reality itself (simply drive Chaos away or slay a god or even become an immortal yourself, and others more)!
  • various game modes (story mode to be able to load and save games, challenge mode to face peculiar weekly challenges, exploration mode for a free wand of wishing and more)
  • various customization options (turning hunger off, turning corruption off, modifying monster difficulty or treasure rates)

ADOM - Wants to be Greenlit

by Myrthos, 12:11

The creator of ADOM contacted us that his game was not in our database, despite it being available for 20 years already. So here is a newsbit on the game just to compensate for that.

ADOM wants to be Greenlit on Steam, so if you think that is a good idea, go ahead and vote it up. If you need some recommendations, here are a few from the creator:

The successful ADOM Indiegogo campaign in 2012 ($90,169 donated) allowed us to greatly expand the game as well as to offer new play modes allowing the player to choose between playing pure ASCII, tile based graphics (our current focus) or even 3D. Thus ADOM successfully thrives in the 21st century, despite being initially launched in 1994.

After going through Greenlight and being launched on Steam ADOM will be the single most challenging and detailed roguelike game on the Steam platform - all thanks to almost 20 years of open development. Team ADOM intends to build upon this for many years to come: The Steam integration e.g. will enhance the ADOM community experience with both standard gameplay features like shared highscores and achievements as well as with new special features exchanging ghosts between players, cooperative modes for fighting Chaos and more.

Or you could try it out yourself.
