Baldur's Gate: EE - Patch 1.3.2053 Released

by Couchpotato, 10:34

Overhaul Games has released a new patch for Baldur's Gate: EE. I thought the game was finished being patched, but it seems not. So here is a sample of the huge update.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Update v1.3.2053

Today we are thrilled to be releasing v 1.3.2053 of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. The update is already available for Windows on Beamdog and Steam, the Mac update is available on Beamdog, and Android can be updated through Google Play. The patch has been submitted to Apple for approval and will soon be available on the Mac and iTunes App Stores.

Crash Fixes

- Game no longer freezes when canceling an imported priest character
- Double-clicking a stack on ground slots no longer crashes the game

- (Android) Returning to the game from sleep mode should no longer cause the game to close

Features and Gameplay Enhancements

- Added "Font Size" to Graphics Options (changing this during play will empty the combat log)
- Quickloot feature from BGII:EE has been implemented
- While viewing a mage's Spellbook screen, players can now switch to a priest character and the game will immediately switch to the Priest Spells screen (and vice versa)
- Spell scrolls that can be written into a spellbook for the current character now display a green-tinted overlay
- Non-friendly NPCs that are Blinded will no longer stand still; they will wander aimlessly until they are close enough to see someone worth attacking
- Phandalyn is now a Lawful Good Paladin
- Drizzt is now properly equipped with his scimitars, and has been recolored to match his description in the books
- All golems in the game now possess appropriate immunities to Poison, Charm, Hold, Fear, Sleep, and Backstab
- All crossbows now require the same strength as their non-magical counterparts
- Rogdok now grants 400 experience points when defeated

Baldur's Gate: EE - Editorial @ Gamasutra

by Couchpotato, 05:57

Gamasutra has a new blog post with Dee Pennyway about the process of rebranding, and beta testing for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition.

Imagine the scenario: a massive repository of bug fixes and new features, a hungry community waiting for a patch, and limited time and resources for thorough testing. How do you make sure the patch is stable before releasing it?

That’s what we were facing with the 1.2 patch for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Well over six-hundred changes needed testing, and after a summer spent in development limbo our players were beginning to wonder if the game would ever see another update. We needed a way to get those people involved, we needed to do the kind of intensive testing that was necessary but beyond our limited resources as a small company, and we needed to make it fun for everyone.

We started by calling it an Open Beta about two weeks before we launched the event. We were surprised to see a great deal of negativity toward the term, which is understandable; if you’ve been waiting for a patch to fix a major bug, the last thing you want to see is a months-long testing process before it’s released, and that’s what people think of when they hear about an Open Beta. So okay, we went back and looked for a better way to present it.

In the end we settled on The Road to v1.2. We wanted to make it clear that this wasn't just any beta. We wanted to tell people, This is the light at the end of the tunnel, this is what we’re working toward, and this is your chance to be a part of it.

The community jumped on board immediately. We were amazed by the enthusiasm and precision of the feedback we received. On our forums, people talked about The Road to v1.2 as though it were an event, not just a beta test. It was great to see the community get involved so readily.

Baldur's Gate: EE - Countdown

by Myrthos, 13:45

There is a countdown timer on the Baldur's Gate site. which at the moment of this writing still has 15 hours to go before reaching the end.

It might be for the Android version or some DLC. Feel free to speculate on it.

Thanks Pongo.

Baldur's Gate: EE - Editorial @ Gamers Lounge

by Couchpotato, 00:53

The Gamers Lounge has a new article about the Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Enhanced Editions.

Recently, a throng of games have been re-released. We've seen these rehashed games become just as, if not more, popular than the original. Resident Evil 4 is getting a new ultimate release on Steam. I'm currently working my way through The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Edition. Not only does it have better visuals, but it has been upgraded, making some of the biggest complaints of the original better and the game in general more enjoyable.

I've been wondering, though: At what point is a game passing "re-release" and going full into "re-make"? While I never got to play Wind Waker on the original system, I do wonder what the experience difference will be: almost as if I would rather have the option rather than simply be forced into what is "better." Of course, it is the right of the developers to do as they see fit, so if George Lucas wants Han to shoot first, I suppose he can make Han shoot first.

Recently Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were re-released on PC via Beamdog, and I've got to say that it feels done right. Collecting all of the original expansions into one package fully ready-to-go with today's computers, Beamdog has given fans of the original everything they expect in an enhanced, hi-definition package, complete with some modern twists like easy loot collection and a handy help menu. The basic game is all here, just with a few natural advancements that you can appreciate. It's like if your favorite shoes suddenly came out with those Marty McFly auto-lacing things. Same comfort, but you don't have to take 30 seconds in the morning.

Baldur's Gate EE - Barred from Sale, BG II: EE Delayed

by Couchpotato, 01:27

Well it's with sad news I bring word of an official statement posted on the Baldur's Gate website.

Trent Oster explains that due to legal problems surrounding the Baldur's Gate license, and with publisher Atari, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition may no longer be purchased from the Apple App Store, or the Beamdog game service.

Also this means that the release of Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition and patches for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition  have both been delayed indefinitely.

Dear Friends of Baldur's Gate,

We recently removed Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition from sale on Beamdog and the Apple App Store. We've taken this step at our publishing partner's request as we attempt to resolve a number of contractual issues.

Unfortunately, until this matter is resolved, we are unable to release the latest Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition patch or Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for Android.

This also prevents the launch of Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. I sincerely apologize to the series' fans and promise we are working diligently to remedy the situation.

Regards, Trent Oster President, Beamdog & Overhaul Games
