Bound By Flame - Review @ Rock, Paper, Shotgun

by Couchpotato, 00:32

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has posted one their amusuing reviews for Bound By Flame. As usual they give no score, but plenty of text with witty humor.

The key problem Bound By Flame has is that a few good ideas doth not a classic RPG make. Again, in terms of story and combat engine, it’s surprisingly respectable. The limits of its production are constantly on display though, from plot choices that don’t actually mean a great deal, to the relentless blandness of the environments – claustrophobic, boring, ugly places full of barely disguised canyons and the same repeating monsters to trudge through again and again.

Bound By Flame - Review @ RPGamer

by Couchpotato, 05:50

RPGamer posted a new review for Bound By Flame, and they call the game bad. If you want to know the score it was 2/5. Here is their reason for the low score.

It's with a bit of heavy heart that I write this Bound by Flame review. After seeing some encouraging progress made by Spiders in Mars: War Logs, hopes were high that the trend would continue and result in a game that, while unlikely to be spectacular, would at least provide a solid experience. Unfortunately, except for a bit of polish, things are stagnated at best, and coupled with a considerably less engaging story and world than the previous effort, it's hard to come away as anything but disappointed.

Bound By Flame - Review Roundup #3

by Couchpotato, 06:07

Here  is third round of reviews for Bound By Flame I found this week. This should be the last roundup of reviews I will post. As usual the scores vary from bad to good.

The Game Fanatics - 4.5/10

Bottom line, borrow this from a friend, or get it on a steam sale when it’ll cost $5 or less. That’s only if you have a hankering for some fantasy though, there are many other games that are simply better.

IGN - 7/10

Bound By Flame has one huge strength: the harmony between its entertaining combat and role-playing systems. Granted, its weak storytelling does weigh it down, but the strong core of its gameplay powers it through to transcend these flaws. Bound By Flame’s combination of progression and action ultimately make it greater than the sum of its parts.

Calm Down Tom - 3/5

The good bits aren’t just pretty good, they’re great. The bad bits are so bad that I was sometimes starring at my screen in disbelief. On balance though, I would rather have a game that’s occasionally great than a game that’s consistently pretty good. No doubt that’s not how everyone will feel, and I can’t argue with anyone who says that Bound by Flame is badly written, technically rough, derivative and full of awful characters.

Softpedia - 8.5/10

Bound by Flame is a worthwhile experience that takes an overplayed fantasy storyline and breathes new life into it, even managing to surprise at times, offering a captivating journey and luring you within its world, keeping you glued to the keyboard until you see its conclusion.

Alloy Seven - No Score

Bound by Flame is listed as Focus Home Intereactive's most ambitious RPG to date. While it does follow the formula of their past RPGs, I agree that this entry attempted to expand and improve on that foundation. They still have some progress to make before their games can be considered truly great, but there is enough fun here to satisfy players who can look past the shortcomings I've mentioned in this review.

Bound By Flame - Review Roundup #2

by Couchpotato, 05:39

Well it's time for the second round of reviews for Spider's new RPG Bound By Flame. As usual the scores are a mixed bag, and I posted them in no particular order.

PC Gamer - 54/100

The combat is fun in parts and the characters grew on me, but so much more of Bound by Flame is tedious, frustrating, and unpolished.

Strategy Informer - 6.5/10

Spiders wanted Bound By Flame to be their big breakout hit but penny-pinching on theirs or their publisher's side will hold them back. The combat system works pretty well once you get over the lack of a roll button and it actually gets very satisfying as soon as you get used to it, as well as level up a bit.

Analog Addiction - 6/10

Bound by Flame is anything but an RPG. Its focus on combat and its great soundtrack are redeemable qualities, though not enough to compensate for being so rough around the edges.

Escapist Magazine - 2.5/5

Bound By Flame would be an immensely likable game, were it not for just how slipshod it ultimately feels. Its individual components are well crafted, but when brought together, the result is something that just isn't quite right.

Gamereactor - 7/10

Spiders manages to deliver a compelling story; enough to raise our verdict a couple of notches from our original impression. However, the team immediately have a list of fixes they need to attend if they revisit this world.

Saving Content - 2/5

Bound By Flame is an average RPG held back by budgets and serious design flaws outweighed by its ambition. By the game’s end, I was happy that it was over, as in that I didn’t have to play it anymore.

Gameranx - 5/10

In the end, I called Bound by Flame a “side-quest” because RPG aficionados could play this game to pass the time but it’s not an essential experience for fans of the genre. However, I recommend skipping this one if you’re not a huge fan of RPGs in general

Gamingtrend - 65/100

Ultimately Spider’s follow up to Mars: War Logs is a far better effort than its predecessor. You can’t help but appreciate the effort put forth, as well as the fantastic concepts and new approach to storytelling. Bound by Flame provides engaging mechanics and choices that actually matter, if you can stomach the horrible voice work.

OnlySP - 6.5/10

Bound By Flame is a conceptually interesting fantasy RPG world with great crafting and music, marred by unpleasant combat that prevents it from truly taking off.

Destructoid - 7/10

A solid game that definitely has an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun

Bound By Flame - Review Roundup

by Couchpotato, 06:46

I was going to wait till later but decided what the hell. Here are a bunch of new reviews for Bound By Flame that range from good to very poor.

Game Informer  - 8/10

A skilled player doing no sidequests and blowing through dialogue can complete the game in about 10-12 hours, but this is sacrificing a ton of content both in the quest, exploration, and relationship-building categories. When you invest the time to master the challenging combat and explore the world, Bound by Flame is a solid romp with rewarding tactical action supported by rewarding boss battles and plenty of ways to see your choices reflected in the world around you.

Games Radar - 3.5/5

If you go into Bound by Flame hoping to play a choice-laden game where every selection you make slowly shapes the world around you, you’ll be greatly disappointed. While you do get some say in how things play out, the outcome will no doubt be the same and your decisions don’t seem that important in the overall development of the story. It’s the rapid-fire decisions made mid-battle and the rich customization options at your disposal that truly let you make the game your own. You do have a demon on your side, after all.

IncGamers - 6/10

I enjoyed my time with Bound by Flame, short as it was. I feel that more could have been added to most aspects of the game, and many of you might agree. This makes DLC seem likely, and a good sized addition to the game could make it feel more complete.

This being said, I think most people will find some enjoyment in Bound by Flame, and while it may not be the best action RPG ever made, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to start my second playthrough.

Gamespot - 4/10

By RPG standards, Bound by Flame isn't a very long or expansive game. If you don't consider the battles you must repeat, the adventure is around a dozen hours long, and there is no world to explore, unless you consider a few medium-size levels made up of twisting hallways to be a world. Bound by Flame shoves too many ideas into its cramped boundaries, thus giving none of them the room they deserved to blossom, and thereby allowing the flames to burn the joy away.

Polygon - 4/10

I tried everything I could think of to get myself to care about Bound by Flame, but eventually I tired of doing all the heavy lifting myself. Between a stale plot that goes nowhere, poorly handled characters and a clunky, boring combat system, there was nothing left for me to hang onto, no momentum left to help propel me. Bound by Flame is worse than just generic; it's a mess of a game pretending at greater ambitions.

And the worst of the bunch from Video Gamer that gave the game a 2/10.

While it features the basic building blocks of an RPG, the presentation they’re wrapped in is offensively shoddy. Graphically it sits somewhere between Morph and that Starship Troopers CGI cartoon you saw once in the 90s. The voice acting is atrocious, especially if you opt for the female lead, who seems to have been directed to sound like Roseanne Barr at her most sarcastic, at all times, no matter the tone of the scene. But you’ll come to regard the horrendous cutscenes as welcome breaks from the tedium of fighting the same forever-respawning handful of enemies for hour after endless hour. Quests are plentiful, but almost every one is of the fetching kind, and that goes for both sidequests and story missions.

Bound By Flame - Meet the Demon

by Couchpotato, 06:18

Spiders released a new post on the Bound By Flame development blog with a look at how the demon will affect your appearance, and what it will cost to use it's powers.

Meet the Demon in Bound by Flame

You are a warrior of the Freeborn Blades, a group of mercenaries known and feared throughout Vertiel. But as the Deadarmy breaks into a ritual organized by your latest employers, things turn sour and, and you find yourself suddenly possessed by a flame demon.

After your initial surprise, and that of your companions, you start feeling the power of the demon within you, running through your veins… but this power, should you decide to use it, comes at a price: your very own humanity.

I also have a bonus to go with the newsbit with three songs on Youtube.

Bound By Flame - $25.50 on Green Man Gaming

by Couchpotato, 08:32

Thanks to OnlySP I have news you can pre-order Bound By Flame for $25.50.

Forget pre-ordering the game on Steam (or Gamersgate, even). Right now, the highly anticipated RPG from Spiders can be had for the low price of $25.50.

As far as we can tell, this is the best deal to be had on the game at the moment. Where most sites are offering pre-orders at just under $34, using the code ’9HZ09L-D4RYEU-FIW8BE’ when checking out on Green Man Gaming offers players another 20% off the asking price, bringing the total to the low price of $25.50. Anyone having already pre-ordered the game for PC would be smart to cancel and re-order here before release on Tuesday.

If that two hour gameplay video  is any indicator of the quality of the game, this one definitely holds a lot of promise.

Bound By Flame - Launch Trailer

by Myrthos, 13:15

Here is the launch trailer for Bound by Flame. which is scheduled for release on the 9th of May.

Bound by Flame will be available on Friday! So to celebrate the week of the game launch on PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC, here's a final teaser video of the most ambitious RPG from Spiders studio: a launch trailer with music by Olivier Derivière (Assassin's Creed, Remember Me), who has created an original Bound by Flame soundtrack that is thrilling and sublime.

This latest Bound by Flame video highlights one of the important elements in the game, the background story and the gameplay: the relationship between the hero and the flame demon that possesses him. The choices and decisions you make in the game will determine if you allow your demonic side to predominate and gradually transform you physically in exchange for his powerful fire magic, or if you resist the demon's control and retain your humanity to develop your heroic skills.

Your human/demon duality will have a notable impact not only on your approach to the extremely tactical combat in the game, but also on the reaction of the people around you, particularly your relationship with your companions. It is therefore a central component in Bound by Flame that will influence your game experience depending on your choices and also assure gameplay longevity: players who want to try every possible way of progressing through the adventure are sure to start the game again to make totally different decisions from the first time!

Bound By Flame - Mathras the Undead

by Couchpotato, 09:14

Spiders released a new post on the Bound By Flame development blog with information on another companion called Mathras. Here are the details of the undead Lich.

Mathras, your undead companion in Bound by Flame

Mathras is certainly no ordinary undead. Educated and refined, he lived before the time of the Lords of Ice, even before any known civilization.

Sadly for him, Mathras does not have enough time to explain that he’s not even remotely allied with the Deadarmy before humans try to murder him.

He will join the cause of the hero out of simple curiosity, or perhaps fun, but beware: on the battlefield, Mathras casts lethal spells on his enemies, controlling their minds and transforming them into allies during the fight.

After all, Mathras has had the last 3,000 years to perfect the art of jousting and fighting, skills he applies equally as well through words as well as magic.

Bound By Flame - New Companion Images

by Couchpotato, 00:14

Focus Home Interactive & Spiders Games sent a new press release with a few more images of your companions who will join you in your quest in Bound By Flame.

NEW IMAGES OF THE COMPANIONS IN BOUND BY FLAME!

We’re now just one week away from May 9 and the release of Bound by Flame, the new RPG developed by Spiders studio for PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC. Meanwhile 5 new screenshots will provide more glimpses of what’s in store.

Last week we presented the hero in Bound by Flame and described his customization options, so today we’re meeting the various companions who will accompany you throughout the adventure, and even to the very gates of hell!

Companions are real assets in combat and will prove crucial in the more advanced difficulty modes. Consider carefully who you want to fight alongside you, and combine their skills and your own abilities to achieve a flawless combat synergy, but remember to bear the nature of enemies you are confronting in mind! Each companion fulfils a specific role and has talents and attributes that are unique to them.

Sybil, the young mage, provides excellent long-distance back-up and uses a special skill that enables her to heal you during combat. Randval the warrior excels at hand-to-hand combat and will divert the attention of your opponents, leaving you free to attack safely and to cast your devastating fire spells! Rhelmar the elf is an expert in ranged combat and will rain arrows down on your enemies while you charge into the heat of the melee. The witch, Edwen, has mastered certain hitherto unknown dark and mystical arts. She is able to devastate adversaries at long range with powerful magic spells, and can temporarily take control of an enemy’s mind and turn it against their allies. Last, but not least, Mathras is no ordinary undead... more ancient than the Ice Lords themselves, Mathras has perfected the art of swordsmanship and melee combat over the last several thousand years. Like Edwen, he can also reverse the allegiance of an opponent for a short period using his willpower alone!

Your companions also play an important part in the story, as they all have their own reasons for fighting at your side and may be driven by honor, vengeance or mere curiosity. You will gradually develop friendships, rivalries and even romances with them along the way, and your actions and decisions will influence your relationship with each one, so make sure you don’t upset your best friend!

Bound By Flame - New Music Trailer

by Couchpotato, 04:59

Spiders sent a new press release with information on the music for Bound By Flame. and mention the games Composer is Olivier Derivière. They also included a new video.

BOUND BY FLAME, THE MUSIC TRAILER!

Bound by Flame, the most ambitious RPG to date from Spiders studios, due for release on PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC on 9 May 2014, can now reveal its original soundtrack in a fabulous video with commentary from the composer Olivier Derivière and the singer Iré.

Olivier Derivière is a composer who won multiple awards for his work in video games (Remember Me, Assassin's Creed 4). In this video illustrated by many new sequences and enthralling excerpts from the game's soundtrack, Olivier tells us about his work on Bound by Flame. This is also the opportunity to discover singer Iré Zhekova, who gives her voice to some of the game's musics.

These two artists first explain how they steeped the music in an atmosphere of loneliness and despair conveyed in the dark atmosphere of the game. They also describe how they combined a murmuring choir with the clear sound of a single voice full of emotion to produce a sense of contrast between the game hero and the flame demon possessing him. They invented an imaginary language for Iré's singing to explore the human voice and express emotions beyond the meaning of words and to express feelings of hope and fear.

A total of several hours of original music was created for the game, which embraces many different styles and also enhances the somber and unique atmosphere that is the hallmark of this epic roleplay title. You can listen to more extracts from this extraordinary musical oeuvre on the artist's SoundCloud page

Bound By Flame - Images Of The Heroes

by Couchpotato, 05:54

Spiders studios sent a new press release for Bound By Flame to remind everyone of the games release date, and share a few images of how your characters change.

IMAGES OF THE HEROES IN BOUND BY FLAME!

Your choices will determine your destiny… and your appearance!

Bound by Flame, the new RPG developed by Spiders studios, is set for release on PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC on May 9, and a series of exclusive images now provides another tantalizing glimpse of what’s in store! The game hero takes center stage in these screenshots, and players can create and play him before launching into an epic quest in pursuit of the Ice Lords. All your choices in Bound by Flame will therefore impact on your adventure and also on your hero’s appearance!

You therefore play a mercenary of the Freeborn Blades, who is possessed by a flame demon at the start of the adventure. When you start a new game, you are free to choose your character’s look: gender (which will affect some of the dialog, particularly with companions and potential romances), facial features, ethnicity and hairstyles.

But your character customization doesn’t end there; you will find and create new items of armor during your quest using the ingenious in-game crafting system. Not only will this have an impact on your combat tactics using the bonuses you have been granted but it will also alter your appearance, because each armor item can be customized with various extras, i.e. shoulder pads, knee pads and a range of other protective features, each having a particular style. The combinations are infinite, so each character will be unique!

Last but not least, you will be faced with many choices and dilemmas during your adventure. Depending on your decisions, you can perform heroic actions to reject the demon’s influence or be consumed by the power of the flame by allowing yourself to be controlled by the demon’s will. This demonic influence will be shown in the different stages of your transformation, and you will become increasingly demonic and less human! These screenshots illustrate all this using a selection of characters you can create and play in Bound by Flame!

Bound By Flame - Combat Demo Video #2

by Couchpotato, 05:02

Focus Interactive released the second combat video to a few select websites. I managed to find it on the Playstation Blog, and not the games main website.

This video is brand new and 100% pure gameplay—no special effect, no cutscene--and should give you a little bit of a taste of the combat, before we release an epic combat trailer that covers all the combat mechanics and fighting styles. You'll catch a sample of the possibilities Bound by Flame offers in combat: Stealth, crossbow, fireballs, dual wield daggers, two-handed axe and hammer.

Bound By Flame - Interview @ VG 24/7

by Couchpotato, 05:18

VG 24/7 has a new Interview/Preview with Project Manager Walid Miled to talk about how the thirst for power can corrupt you in Bound By Flame.

While speaking with project manager Walid Miled over Skype I was told that your fellow adventurers can leave at various points in the quest if they feel they can no longer trust you, and there’s also the risk of locking out sections of the plot altogether depending on your inclination. It sounds like a deeper format than your average binary experience.

“It was part of the core at the start,” Miled says of the moral system,” different endings, companions… how they react, how the quests lock and how other quests open. We had to go through all of this and make sure that the player gets a different feeling depending on the choices in the story, gameplay-wise, and so that the character really evolves visually. This has a real impact on the gameplay, so yeah it was really a core part of the game.”

The moral slant is made more intriguing given that the player’s demonic partner isn’t actually evil. Its motivation is a mystery. Miled and his team were keen to avoid making this a choice between good and evil, but to keep things more ambiguous so that vital decisions would be less clear-cut. Short-term advantages such as unlocking new combat options across the game’s three XP-based skill trees may sound tempting, but refusing to submit to the entity will have its own benefits as well. In the end you will end on one of three endings denoting human, demonic and neutral leanings.

“We encourage repeat play in many different ways, ” Miled goes on. “There’s the gameplay first, because you can really specialise your character’s… I could say class, but there are no classes in the game. It’s more about your skill tree because you have two fighting styles, so we encourage repeat play in the gameplay and fighting, but also choosing demon or human will make some characters stay and others leave, then there’s all those different endings. When the player starts over they can have a totally renewed experience.”

Bound By Flame - Preview @ Destructoid

by Couchpotato, 04:55

Destructoid has a new preview of Bound By Flame based of a hands-off presentation form GDC 2014. The writer of the preview was impressed by the game.

I came away pretty impressed with Bound By Flame. While granted it isn’t too different from other titles, it does seem to do things pretty well. Combat looked fun, there's a lot of options to consider for your character plus it’s great to see that your choices actually have a lasting, and very noticeable impact. Bound By Flame will be seeing a release on May 9 on PC and all current consoles (except Xbox One and Wii U), so players can expect to take a trip through this intriguing action-RPG soon.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ IGN

by Couchpotato, 05:12

If you want to read another preview of Bound By Flame then head over to IGN they played the game at GDC 2014. They talk about combat, crafting, and demonic choice.

The last time we saw Bound by Flame we were introduced to Vulcan, a mercenary on a quest to rid the world of seven ice lords. Unfortunately, when our hero gets possessed by a fire demon, it's up to players to choose whether to use demonic powers or more traditional skills to take care of business. In a recent demo, we were shown the impact of these decisions, and got a better look at Vulcan's different fighting styles.

Vulcan, who can be played either as a male or female, has two main combat styles: heavy and light. Heavy weapons, like axes and hammers, are great for landing strong attacks on single or multiple enemies, and can be used to break enemy shields. If you block at the right time while using a heavy weapon, you'll be able to perform a critical counter attack. When using the light style, Vulcan equips two high damage daggers.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ MMORPG

by Couchpotato, 05:29

MMORPG posted a short preview of Bound By Flame based on a demo from GDC 2014. The tone of the preview is positive which is good news as the game is available in May.

Bound By Flame has a massive world to explore. There are four full chapters and about 25 hours of game play. There are lots of enemies to fight of all different types. Monsters, undead, evil necromancers are against you at every turn. The game has a full day and night cycle which can bring about different encounters as the times change.

The real highlight in Bound By Flame is the action combat. It moves very quickly and is very fluid, and fans of The Witcher series will definitely be pleased. The game can be played on the PS4, XBox 360, or PC when it launches in May. We really liked what we saw with Bound By Flame. The dark fantasy setting and demonic spell effects really add to the grim reality of the world. Playing as a mercenary also adds some bravado in how you go into all of your encounters. There may be a lot of RPGs in the works, but Bound By Flame is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Bound By Flame - GDC 2014 Previews

by Couchpotato, 04:46

Spiders was showing off their ARPG Bound By Flame at GDC 2014, and a few journalists have written a few previews that talk about the current state of the game.

The first preview is from Hardcore Gamer, and the writer of the article ponders on whether the game is bound for greatness. Here is a snip of his article.

Bound By Flame is shaping up to be a truly great RPG. Assuming Spiders can iron out the gameplay kinks from their last few outings, and maintain the high aesthetic and narrative standards set by Of Orcs and Men, it could well be the western RPG to beat of 2014. The game is scheduled for release on May 9th, which happens to be my birthday. I’ve gotta say, Spiders, I’m flattered, but if you want to give me a birthday hug with your eight spindly legs, you’ve got another thing coming.

And the second preview is from PlayStation Lifestyle with a look at the game.

RPG’s are few and far between for next gen gaming this early in its life cycle, so I definitely had my hopes up when I sat down with one of the developers from Spiders Studios and got to see the game in action. It has a beautifully crafted world with graphics worthy of the next gen title and a frame rate that is said to fall between 30 and 60 FPS..

Bound By Flame - Meet Randval The Warrior

by Couchpotato, 04:08

Spiders has released more information about a new companion that will join your party in Bound By Flame. This time we are introduced to Randval The Warrior.

Randval is a warrior, last survivor of an ancient clan that was decimated by the Deadarmy. He now lives with the burden of regaining the lost honor of his clan, or to die trying.

According to his strict code of honor, Randval protects the village of Valvenor, waiting for an opportunity to claim this honor back.

His meeting with the Hero of Bound by Flame will give Randval this opportunity he was longing for. The seemingly impossible quest the Hero has thrown himself in is an epic, heroic and desperate goal definitely worthy of the code of honor of Randval’s clan.

Randval is an extremely disciplined fighter, who is ready to sacrifice his life if it is necessary. He considers the demonic powers of the hero as a mean to fight the Ice Lords.

On the battlefield, he will rush into the enemies, taunting them to get their attention and have them focus their attacks on him, giving his allies freedom of movement and relative safety to attack.

Bound By Flame - Official Release Date

by Couchpotato, 13:15

Spiders studios sent out a new press release with the official release date for Bound By Flame. Seems SpoonFULL and Morrandir were correct last week.

BOUND BY FLAME, THE RELEASE DATE AND NEW SCREENSHOTS!

Bound by Flame, the new RPG developed by Spiders studios, will be released on May 9th on PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC. Today, the game offers a new glimpse of what's in store with a new series of exclusive images of some of the ferocious creatures you'll have to face in your numerous quests!

The bestiary you will confront in Bound by Flame is impressive, rich and varied. Conceived and brought to life by the talented teams at Spiders studios, these creatures are as terrifying as they are deadly, and will do their utmost to make your life hell in spectacular, real-time and highly tactical battles. And just how they do that is revealed in the six new screenshots we urge you to check out now!

The strategic depth of the combat system in Bound by Flame has been made possible mainly through the variety and originality of the game bestiary. Each creature has its specific attacks, special skills and, in particular, individual behavior that will force the player to adapt his tactics and combat style depending on the composition of the groups of enemies he encounters. This, combined with the awesome range of strikes available to the player, the use of magic and the incredible combat animations, contributes to make the battles in Bound by Flame both tactically complex and visually stunning.

A video dedicated to the combat system in Bound by Flame will also be unveiled in the coming weeks!

Bound By Flame - Editorial @ Playstation Blog

by Couchpotato, 04:29

The developers of Bound By Flame Spiders posted a new link to a new article on the Playstation Blog that explains the game crafting system.

The Crafting System Explained

Throughout your quest, you will loot various materials and components hidden in chests or from the corpses of your dead enemies. These are the basic components to craft weapons, armors, traps, ammunition or potions that you will need to progress in the game.

Don’t underestimate the usefulness of crafting in Bound by Flame: some of the best pieces of equipment are crafted!

The character visual customisation is very deep: some pieces of armor have up to three slots that can be upgraded, with a direct impact on your character’s appearance.

Crafting components

In Bound by Flame, the opportunities to gather materials for crafting are many. Killing monsters, looting chests and coffins, or completing quests are all good means to collect various components.

There are a lot of crafting resources, and each of them has several quality levels:

  • Metal (raw, refined…)
  • Steel
  • Gemstone
  • Bones
  • Leather
  • Blood
  • Hearth dust
  • etc…

Most of these materials can have a tainted variant, implying various new crafting attributes. While low quality components are very common, you will need to gather a large amount of high quality materials to craft the best weapons and armors. Fortunately, low quality components may be used also to create higher quality materials, at the cost of quantity.

For instance, three coins let you craft a piece of raw metal, and four raw metal pieces will let you craft a piece of refined metal!

Another source of crafting materials will come from recycling your unwanted pieces of equipment. When you find a new armor with better stats, you might want to dismantle the old one, in order to get some components back!

Bound By Flame - Meet Sybil The Wizard

by Couchpotato, 05:52

Spiders has released more information for Bound By Flame introducing us to another companion called Sybil The Wizard. She was the companion kissed in the last video.

Shy yet ingenuous and combative, the wizard Sybil is the daughter of the leader of the Order of the Red Scholars.

Growing up under the cover of the order, she traveled around the world to gather and centralize knowledge of all kind.

On the battlefield, you can count on her offensive powers to fight your enemies, but she is also specialized in the art of healing, magically tending to your wounds in the heat of battle.

Diplomatic, very smart, Sybil is pushed by her curiosity to join the Hero in his quest.

She will help him to understand his new demonic inner self, and is the first to worry about the consequences the extensive use of his demonic powers may involve.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ RPGamer

by Couchpotato, 05:07

RPGamer has posted a new preview of the ARPG Bound By Flame.

Spiders' efforts so far have followed a real-time, action-based format for combat, with a few stragetic elements, and Bound by Flame continues the tradition. The system is relatively straightforward and unlikely to involve too much in terms of innovation, but has suited previous games well and should do the same here. The game provides different options for players to build, customise, and play their character, which should help a lot with keeping players engaged. Players have three skill trees to invest in, one that focuses on more out-and-out combat, one that focuses more on subterfuge and stealth, and finally one that focuses on harnessing the fire magic abilities granted by the flame demon's possession. Bound by Flame looks set to have a pretty decent number of unique-looking enemies, and the game should provide plenty of variation not just in how they look, but in their behaviour and the tactics needed to bring them down.

The crafting system in Mars: War Logs seems to be a basic precursor to the system used in Bound by Flame, which while not being amongst the most substantial or deep out there, provided some interesting customisation as well as adding another interesting facet to the game. Bound by Flame's system looks to be more substantial in the number of options and crafting items available. Rather than just providing new weapons, armours, items, etc., the system allows players to attach additions and enhancements to their equipment, such as hand guards for swords, or spaulders for breastplates. All the various additions to equipment will be immediately visible on the player in-game, which is a nice touch.

The team is well aware that it won't be able to compete on quite the same technical level the likely beast (and shamelessly lazy comparison option) that will be The Witcher 3. So rather than going for the logistical nightmare that is trying to keep tabs on an open world, Vertiel and the story is divided into hub-based chapters. It is worth noting that Spiders' previous game, Mars: War Logs, suffered from a bit of a disaster with it's initial French to English localisation, going so far as to warrant a complete retranslation and redub (which worked well), but this shouldn't really temper expectations as it looks far more likely to be a case of lesson learned than a potential issue for Bound by Flame.

Bound By Flame - Meet Rhelmar The Ranger

by Couchpotato, 01:40

Spiders has released more information for Bound By Flame introducing us to another companion called Rhelmar the Ranger.

Rhelmar, your ranger companion in Bound by Flame

Rhelmar is an Elf with his own sense of justice. Alas, it rarely fits the definition the rest of the world gives to ‘justice’!

A former outlaw, Rhelmar rejects the Elves’ neutral state in the ongoing conflict, and takes and active part in the fight against the Deadarmy.

Considered a pariah amongst his people, Rhelmar is determined to act as he feels right, even if it implies risking his own life.

On the battlefield, he’s an elite archer who can inflict lethal damage to his opponents from range… but he is also more than able with a dagger, when close range fights are inevitable.

Bound By Flame - Interview @ Gamereactor

by Myrthos, 12:13

A video interview with Spiders' producer Walid Miled is available at Gamereactor.

This bit is on choices:

The player is given choices. At some point in the game when the player has a quest that he can choose or a dialogue that he can choose that will push him in a way or another way. A demon way or the human way. And at this point it will branch the game and you will have other quests other choices that are conditioned to this. Some companions you can have, some companions you can't have. It also affects the player visually, so you start growing horns, catching on fire and it has an affect on gameplay as your equipment will start to disintegrate, degrade because you're on fire, you've got horns, you can't put a helmet on. Things like this.

Bound By Flame - Previews

by Myrthos, 12:41

Here is a collection of previews for Spiders' Bound by Flame.

Everybody Plays

In a landscape where heavy hitters like Skyrim and Dragon Age serve as social black holes, it can be hard for the smaller role playing games to get noticed. After all, with our save on Oblivion nearing the 150 hour mark (and that's nothing compared to some people), there's only so much adventuring you can do in-between life's other annoying diversions, like going to work, feeding yourself, and washing. In turn, that means that new kids on the block, like the upcoming Bound by Flame have to work that much harder to get themselves noticed - and while it may not be set to rewrite any rulebooks, this is definitely shaping up to be an entertaining adventure.

Techspot

This game won't replace the AAA-titles that you all love and enjoy, and Spiders doesn't expect it to. They simply want to tell a story, and they are well aware that they do not have the necessary resources to compete with some of the bigger developers out there. The game is estimated to take around 20 to 25 hours total to complete, but with multiple endings and varying side-quests, you might find yourself replaying this release a few times. This is definitely a game that all you RPG fans will want to keep your eyes on.

Xbox Achievements

Bound by Flame's concept of physical metamorphosis is an interesting one, underpinned by some promising and robust RPG mechanics. Whether the story can measure up to the game's ideas remains to be seen and the voice acting at present is a bit on the ropey side, but there's certainly plenty of potential here. If nothing else, Bound by Flame could be the perfect stop gap before Dragon Age: Inquisition comes along, since Spiders' game seems to share a great deal of its DNA with BioWare's fantasy opus. That's no bad thing, we think you'll agree.

Fansided

If you’re expecting an RPG experience to rival that of The Witcher 3, you will be surely disappointed. Spiders is more focused on on creating a story-driven experience that will resonate with players rather than creating a massive game.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ PCGMedia

by Couchpotato, 00:38

PCGMedia has a new preview for Spiders ARPG Bound By Flame.

Spiders have a few trademark features and mechanics they’re retaining this time around, including a similar and streamlined GUI, and more gameplay-centric elements. For instance, there are companions and NPCs you meet throughout the game who will react dynamically to your choices. They can also die, which changes the game (at least, their role in the story) and may either lock you out of, or unlock, different features. What’s more, you can only interact with certain NPCs under certain conditions, such as if you’re lucky enough to become a demon, something I’m told you can switch in and out of (you also get some badass horns, but you can’t wear a helmet.)

Bound By Flame - Previews

by Myrthos, 15:26

Here are two previews for Spiders' Bound By Flame.

Dealspwn:

Bound By Flame is coming along well, adn Miled was visibly disappointed that the nature of the showcase meant that sadly we ran out of time before he could show us everything that he wanted to. It's clear that Spiders are proud of the game that they're making, and  that they've aimed high with this title. The influence of CD Projekt RED's work with The Witcher series is heavily evident here, and to be fair, if you're going to take inspiration from anywhere, as a small studio looking to make an ambitious RPG, looking at CDPR's work (particularly with The Witcher 1 -- they're a bit bigger now than they were then) is a good place to start.

The digital focus is important, too. What was started with Mars: War Logs is being continued here: the idea that you can make a sub-£20, 25-hour RPG on a fraction of a triple-A budget, and still produce a quality product. It's probably for this reason that Spiders have looked towards as broad a market as possible, with the game coming to PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and PS4. Miled said that although there would be some improvements when it comes to the PS4 version, Bound By Flame was ultimately a game designed for last-gen consoles. The team haven't ruled out an appearance on the Xbox One, but according to Miled, there are no plans for an XO version as yet because they didn't receive dev kits in time.

Strategy Informer:

Spiders seem to be tempering ambition with practicality. Bound by Flame isn't some mega-budget blockbuster, and the studio knows it. Instead, they're focusing on making a game that's fun to play, with some cool mechanics and ideas. It feels like a rugged, lively B-movie alternative to the triple-A franchise giants like Dragon Age and Skyrim. I don't mean that to be patronising either, there's some real creativity and enthusiasm at work here. You'll visit several hub towns during the game's 25 hour run-time, and although I only saw the opening dungeon, the developers are promising that there will be plenty of varied locations to visit and a wide range of enemies to fight.

Bound By Flame - Witch Companion Edwen

by Couchpotato, 01:18

Lightning Gaming News has some details about a witch called Edwen. She is one of the companion NPCs who will join you in Bound By Flame.

While we did spot this character in the recent barrage of concept art released by Spiders Studios, the developers have only now chosen to reveal a bit more about the mysterious female companion in their combat RPG Bound by Flame. First off, Edwen is a powerful witch, so expect plenty of magic-based attacks and spells in her arsenal; she can event turn into a real fury in combat.

While not much has been revealed about her past, we do know that although she is an ally of the protagonist, she carries an intense hatred for the Lords of Ice and is motivated by her own quest for vengeance and retribution. Furthermore, she propounds that the main character harness the demonic powers and utilise it as a means to his own end, instead of embracing his humanity.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ IGN

by Couchpotato, 01:32

IGN takes a look at Spiders ARPG Bound By Flame in this new preview.

For a game that we’d never seen in action until now, there’s been an impressive amount of hype already generated for Bound by Flame. Thanks to a combination of a very impressive debut trailer and the fact that there’s a bit of an RPG drought at the moment as we eagerly await The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisiton, the anticipation for Bound by Flame has grown unchecked.

Now that we’ve actually seen the game, however, we can shed some more light on what to expect. Bound by Flame takes place in a high fantasy world under siege by seven ice lords. You play the role of Vulcan, a mercenary tasked with trying to defend the beleaguered lands from the minions of evil, which include gigantic, rotting flesh golems and shambling cadavers.

We also get to see some of the terrifying enemies your customisable hero will encounter, and the companions who will aid you in defeating said opponents and completing your quests.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ Gamekult

by Myrthos, 17:59

The French gaming site Gamekult has previewed Bound by Flame. As could be expected the article is in French, but you can always try the usual translate option, which will inform you of things like this:

We also imagine that the companions to recruit throughout the game will have their say on our eventual transformation and was especially able to cross a former member of the Lords of Cold that will join us in our misfortunes. The atmosphere of the world of Bound By Flame also seems rather sinister with a good scary bestiary and particularly dark nights. The day / night cycle is to have its own interest since some quests and some threats will only be available once the beautiful sun, lying. Spiders seem to have fun at the casting compound monstrosity that will cross our path, each is entitled to his little immunity to this type of damage to his property or disabling passive skill for the adventurer imprudent. What will motivate them to go wandering in the dark looking for new exploits to do before getting a big tuck poisonous creature. Go to the second quarter of this year to engage in the quest Bound By Flame on PC, PlayStation 3 and 4 but also Xbox 360.

Bound By Flame - New Screenshots

by Couchpotato, 00:54

Spiders has released a new press release with details about Bound By Flame with three new screenshots.

BOUND BY FLAME, A BEASTLY ROLE PLAYING GAME

Bound by Flame, the new game developed by Spiders studios for PC, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360®, can now reveal three new images showing some of the extraordinary creatures in the vast bestiary.

The bestiary in Bound by Flame has some amazing, impressive and unique creatures that have been created and brought to life by the talented Spiders teams, and the images released today provide a glimpse of what’s in store: here we see the game hero and his companions confronting formidable enemies like the Bone Golem, the general of the armies of the Living Dead and the terrifying Lich.

Bound by Flame uses the combat system designed for Mars War Logs, the previous Spiders RPG where the highly dynamic and tactical approach to the combat proved a real hit with players, but goes further and offers players even greater variety and tactical depth in battles. This has been made possible by the richness and originality of the game bestiary, where every creature has attacks, special skills and, in particular, behavior that is unique to them, forcing the player to adapt his tactics and combat style depending on the composition of the groups of enemies he encounters. This, combined with the wide range of attacks available to the player, the use of magic and some impressive combat animations (seen recently in the first video teaser), make the battles in Bound by Flame both tactically complex and spectacular.

Bound by Flame will be released on PC, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® in early 2014.

Bound By Flame - First Combat Trailer

by Couchpotato, 01:36

Focus Home Interactive posted the first teaser trailer for Bound By Flame showing off the games combat.

The combat system of Mars War Logs, the previous RPG made by Spiders Studio, seduced players with its dynamic and tactical approach. Bound by Flame goes even further, taking as a base this successful recipe, but offering a bigger selection of attacks and skills, more fluid and spectacular animations, and the use of Magic. All this contributes to making Bound by Flame's combat very impressive, but also resolutely tactical, as players face a huge, original bestiary filled with otherworldly creatures. This is being shown in today's video, in the thunderous clash of three warriors' twirling blades facing an outnumbering enemy and a seriously big surprise.

Bound By Flame - Video Interview @ PCGMedia

by Couchpotato, 00:59

PCGMedia interviews the Lead Game Designer Walid Miled. What is said is basically Bound by Flame keeps the best of Mars War Logs, and expands the scale and depth.

Bound by Flame is an action RPG which expands on the scale and depth of their previous RPGs. With massive monster bosses, improved combat, better voice acting and a much larger game, the Spiders have, according to Miled, learned from feedback gained from the Mars: War Logs release which gathered mostly positive reviews.

In our interview, Miled explained how they had kept the critically acclaimed features of Mars, such as the combat, skill features, and crafting, and expanded them into something bigger. In Bound by Flame, players can gain (or even farm) achievements known as 'Feats', which will unlock skills and abilities for the player. These can be anything from collecting X amount of object, to defeating a special monster type.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ Gamerliving

by Couchpotato, 02:58

Gamerliving has a new preview for Bound By Flame.

When the game begins, you will embark on an epic quest to save the world from an evil sorcerer’s army, comprised of different spirits, monsters, and even the undead. You have been hired to protect a faction called the Red Scribes who are trying to find a way to win the war against this enormous army. Hell-bent on destroying the human race. You are the last hope the world has to turn the tables on your foes and start winning the war.

Even with your skill as a swordsman, there is a dark part to you that could prove even more useful to the war effort than you were originally hired for. You are possessed by a demon and can either choose to align yourself with the demon inside of you and become an incredibly powerful being, or fight against it to become a good and legendary hero. The story will change depending on which way you choose to go, so be careful what you do!

If you’re a fan of games set in a medieval-themed world, Bound by Flame will really be an exciting adventure for you! The small preview we saw was set around dilapidated castles, so old that the grass had begun sprouting in between the cracks on the stone flooring. The characters themselves are in third-person view, sporting metal or leather armour and fighting against grey decaying corpses and wispy white spirits. The transitions between sections are impressive, with high quality graphics and rendering that is sure to help you feel like you are in a fantasy universe.

To add to the quality of the atmosphere, every fantasy game needs a little bit of magic! Your internal demon will grant you the ability to use basic fire attacks to begin with, which will grow and change as you level up and swing towards the evil side. You’ll notice that the more you align yourself with your possessive partner, your physical nature can also change, even to the point of transforming you completely! That may not be something you will want to have happen, but if you decide not to align yourself with the demon, the only magic you will be able to use is ice or healing magic, as the Mages of the land are not typically able to wield such a dangerous force as fire.

Bound By Flame - E3 2013 interview and Previews

by Couchpotato, 00:41

Bound by Flame was at E3 but seems to be ignored by most sites. Here are two previews and a new interview video.

Bound by Flame Interview with Jehanne Rousseau at E3 2013

RPGFan

Bound by Flame is not designed as a full open world, but instead is divided into chapters, with each chapter having its own quest hub and areas to explore. Because of this design, we were told that the game will be "semi-linear," but with a heavy focus on story.

Combat appears to fairly standard action RPG fare, though we were impressed by the creative monster designs and the detailed environments in which you'll fight. Over the course of the game, you'll meet up to five potential companions, of which two at a time can join you in battle. While you only directly control your own character, you can issue commands and assign set behaviors to your AI-controlled companions.

Outside of battle, you'll interact with your companions and NPCs through a variety of dialog options, a WRPG staple. Depending on your choices, you can affect your relationship with other characters, enough that certain companions may even leave your party if you alienate them enough. For you lovers out there, yes, there will also be romance options.

We don't yet know if Bound by Flame will break the mold of the dark fantasy action RPG, but the wealth of customization options and imaginative monster designs show promise. Maybe being possessed by a hellish flame demon isn't so bad after all.

SideQuesting

Bound by Flame utilizes a traditional Third Person Action RPG gameplay system: run around and slash at enemies, use magic, level up through skill trees. There’s crafting, alliances, and conversation choices. There are up to five additional party members than can join in, and multiple side quests that pop up, seven per party member. The visuals carry a sort of dark fantasy style, with plenty of skeletons and giant demons running around. The environments we saw during our demo presentation showed us the insides of caves, tops of cliffs, and warrior encampments. Characters look like knights or savages, wizards or fighters. It’s not going to blow your socks off from that respect.

Where it does do some interesting things is in the morality side. The main character, which can be created based on our gender and appearance whims, has been possessed by a fire demon. As the game progresses and choices are made to gain power, take the hard way, do good or bad, our hero can become more possessed by the entity, slowly turning into one along the way. The change is both physical and plot-based, too. In our presentation the character grew horns, became scaly, more muscular and threatening, and the appearance will be different based on how we’ve designed our characters. The game’s different factions and allegiances will change, since some groups are considered pure and others are nearly cult-like towards the demon.

It’s a little like the team took the idea of Mass Effect 2‘s Shepard physical changes and expounded upon them to the nth degree.

It’s an intriguing idea that may inspire a few playthroughs, as players take different paths and make different choices along the way. It seems like it has the ability to make everyone’s experience with it unique. It’s still early in development, and has been pushed out of 2013 into the beginning of 2014. Though it’s being developed for XBLA , PSN, and PC right now, the team hasn’t made any choices yet for next gen consoles as of yet.

Bound By Flame - Preview @ Gaming Illustrated

by Myrthos, 13:05

Gaming Illustrated has penned down a preview of Bound by Flame, summarizing what is known up to now of the game.

In Bound by Flame, gamers will be put into a wildly imaginative world as a mercenary possessed by a flame demon in a Dark Fantasy universe. Because of the dark forces, players will choose between various dark forces or reject the evil influences and develop heroic talents in their place. It is said that in the game, players will be very tempted by the dark path because of escalating opposing forces and enemies. As players move more toward the demonic side, their outward appearance will reflect the choices they make.

Bound By Flame - New Screenshots

by Myrthos, 16:04

Two new screenshots and a piece of artwork have been made available for Spiders Studios' Bound By Flame.

From this accompanying press release we learn that the game will be shown to the press at E3.

Under development for many months now, Bound by Flame unveils more today through two new screenshots, before making its debut at E3 where it will be presented for the very first time to international press. After the recent release of Mars War Logs for download on PC (planned for release early Q3 2013 on Xbox LIVE® Arcade and PlayStation®Network), Spiders Studio, with Bound by Flame, benefits from a bigger budget and extensive development planning allowing them to realize their great ambitions in this big action/role-playing game.

Bound by Flame lets you play a mercenary possessed by a flame demon in an ambitious Dark Fantasy universe. As a victim of this demonic influence, players will have to choose between the powers offered by this evil or to reject the demonic influence, developing heroic talents instead. Dangers, and enemies becoming more terrifying and fearsome in battle, will be temptations to acquire more power by giving up part of the hero's soul to the demon. Progression of the demonic influence will be reflected by the transformation of the hero's body.

Through its different chapters, Bound by Flame will offer many quests around a primary, epic adventure. Depending on the choices made by the player and the influence of the demon, some chapters will offer different scenarios and a different experience, adding important replayability to the game. Real-time battles are impressive and dynamic. If the player begins the game knowing only the basics of combat, fire magic, and assassination, he will be able to specialize by unlocking and improving many skills and powers, through 3 different skill trees.

Bound by Flame lets the players customize their character. During the creation of their hero, players will be able choose their gender and facial characteristics. This will of course have an influence on the demon's appearance. Bound by Flame also includes a crafting system, allowing them to create and improve equipment, including their armor and weapons. Several companions will join the player during his quest, and will, depending on the player's actions, develop friendship, romance or rivalry.

Finally, the bestiary of Bound by Flame is rich and spectacular. Players will get to fight many impressive creatures: shadow dragons, liches, undead, ice creatures... epic confrontations abound. Which path will the players take? Will they lust after the demon's power and magic to annihilate their foes, or will they favor their combat skills and their bravery?

Bound by Flame is targeted for release on PC, PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® at the end of 2013.

Bound By Flame - Announced

by Myrthos, 13:20

Next to Mars: War Logs, Spiders are apparently also working on a second game named Bound by Flame, which is an adventure/RPG and with less than a year from release shows surprisingly little information on the game. There is no video, but there is a screenshot.

We present Bound by Flame to you with the very first screenshot of the game. This action/role-playing game lets you play a mercenary possessed by a flame demon in an ambitious Dark Fantasy universe.
