Crimson Desert - Preview

by Hiddenx, 18:59

Noobfeed checked out Crimson Desert:

Crimson Desert Is Chaos by Design

Part fantasy, part steampunk, part fever dream, the "everything game" might finally have found its rhythm.

Crimson Desert is an open-world epic made up of sky islands, clockwork titans, elemental chain reactions, and arena-level boss fights. It has worn the "everything game" title like armor. After years of hints, a better silhouette is starting to show. Under the show is a more traditional structure, with regions, towns, and outposts spread out across a world that was made for exploration. It's not strange that the title says that. In fact, it might make a lot of sense.

Pearl Abyss shows the world as a mix of different times and styles, not just one. There is a lot of overlap between medieval citadels, steampunk machines, and science fiction. This creates conflict that drives group politics and questlines. Some leaders are open to growth, while others are against it. The result is a variety that isn't just a gimmick. Quests can go from siegecraft to skyborne mischief without breaking the story.

Crimson Desert Preview – The Opposite of a Desert

Crimson Desert has been in development for a long time, but finally, at Gamescom 2025, we managed to play an extended chunk of the game, finally assessing its potential.

Before this year, we played a much shorter segment centered around a boss battle, although we got to see more in a hands-off session

With the release window getting close, Pearl Abyss is finally ready to let us get hands-on with something that really feels like “the game.”

The similarities with the developer’s own Black Desert aren’t limited to the name. The engine is an improved version of the one powering the popular MMORPG, and you can notice it by the massive vistas with crazy draw distance and the many detailed characters carrying complex armor and weapons.

It even shares some of the issues, like a strange wet shader that often appears on some NPCs’ faces when it isn’t raining, and hopefully will be corrected before release. It’s really quite excessive.

That being said, the visual fidelity is, all things considered, fantastic, which is definitely something that it shares with Black Desert.

That being said, there are also some very relevant differences. Crimson Desert isn’t an MMORPG, and it actually isn’t even something that you could really define an RPG. Progression mechanics are so limited that calling it an action-adventure, as Pearl Abyss does, is indeed appropriate.

Interestingly, all I’ve played and seen so far really has nothing to do with a desert. Crimson Desert is a crowded game, and I mean it in a flattering way.

The playable section that was available at Gamescom was right in the middle of a massive field battle, and I had to wade my way through the massive ranks of an enemy army to reach my objective.

That army wasn’t static, but was itself fighting against my allies in a depiction that felt brutal, realistic, and spectacular. It was actually one of the most massive and realistic representations of a medieval field battle that I’ve ever seen in gaming.

by Hiddenx, 18:59

Techradar checked out Crimson Desert:

If you can grapple with Crimson Desert's needlessly complex controls, there's a unique action game here with stunning visuals and deep combat

Crimson Desert dazzles with some of the most technically impressive visuals in modern gaming, offering native 4K, smooth performance, and a sprawling battlefield teeming with detail and destruction. While its complex control scheme and lack of onboarding dampened the demo experience, developer Pearl Abyss’s ambitious action-RPG still shows massive potential ahead of its release later this year.

Since its trailer reveal around half a decade ago, Crimson Desert has generated a wave of anticipation similar to the early excitement surrounding Black Myth: Wukong. Developed by Korean studio Pearl Abyss, the open-world medieval fantasy title captured attention thanks to its jaw-dropping visual showcase.

The trailer stunned viewers with an overwhelming number of highly detailed character models rendered simultaneously, massive draw distances that brought vast landscapes to life, outstanding lighting effects, and an impressive display of particle effects and environmental destruction. The sheer scale and technical polish on display made Crimson Desert feel like a next-gen spectacle in motion.

Crimson Desert Hands-On Preview: Stunning Open World and Dynamic Combat at SGF 2025

At Summer Game Fest 2025 Play Days, I finally got hands-on time with Crimson Desert, one of the most anticipated open-world RPGs coming this year. Unlike earlier demos focused on combat or boss fights, this was the first time I experienced a full story chapter—complete with dynamic physics, large-scale battles, and jaw-dropping visuals

The Start
You are in the shoes of Kliff, who has just had a massive loss in an ambush with his soldiers, who are the Greymanes. After this loss, it is up to Kliff to find the scattered remnants of the Greymanes. He gets word of Oongka, a man from his group who is now in the middle of a rebellion. It is now up to you, as Kliff, to make it to the siege that is ongoing and find Oongka.

I talked to an NPC in a town who asked for my aid in this rebellion, and Kliff agrees. Kliff makes his way to his first destination, a hill with a pedestal and a fallen flag. You use the Thumbstick buttons to aim at the flag, and then you can lift it with stasis powers onto Kliff’s back, and he then sets the flag down into the pedestal. After the flag is down, you are asked to help repair an artillery cannon that you can use to destroy the three scout towers right next to you.

Kliff gets to lead a charge farther down with the men, and you need to race to destroy more scout towers with the newly acquired artillery arrows. If you shoot an artillery arrow, it sends a whistle that indicates to your army to use the cannons in that location. It is helpful for getting rid of the enemy armies and the other scout towers you find in the area.

Once the scout towers are down and your forces have their morale up, you can lead a charge to the castle where you meet Oongka and the army general together, fighting. You join Oongka and then depart to beat the main enemy general who is waiting for you in the throne room.

Crimson Desert Hands-On Preview (PC) – Shaping Up To Be Something Special

Thanks to Pearl Abyss, I recently had the opportunity to go hands-on with a demo build of its upcoming MMORPG, Crimson Desert. The build I experienced focused exclusively on combat and four intense boss fights. While I didn’t get to explore the open world directly, I did catch a glimpse of it, and what I saw left me genuinely impressed and eager to play more. So, what exactly is Crimson Desert, and why has it climbed to the top of my most anticipated games list?

If you weren’t already aware of who Pearl Abyss is, it is the developer of Black Desert Online, the globally successful MMORPG that first launched in South Korea on July 14, 2015. Since then, it has expanded to consoles, PC, and mobile, attracting millions of players and reportedly generating over $1 billion in revenue. Now, Pearl Abyss is shifting gears from multiplayer to a narrative-driven single-player experience with Crimson Desert.

Crimson Desert is an upcoming open-world RPG built using Pearl Abyss’s proprietary Black Space Engine, a next-generation engine developed specifically for expansive, high-fidelity environments. The game follows Kliff, a battle-hardened mercenary, and his crew as they navigate the sprawling continent of Pywel. From what I saw, the world is packed with detail and feels primed for deep exploration.

With Executive Producer Daeil Kim at the helm, Crimson Desert promises a blend of emotional storytelling, intense real-time combat, and richly designed characters. Pearl Abyss is aiming to deliver a truly premium open-world action RPG experience that appeals to players around the world.

Crimson Desert – PC Preview

I was luckily enough to be invited to London by Pearl Abyss to play their up-coming game Crimson Desert. There I watched a video explaining the game’s combat and some information about each of the four bosses. Afterwards we got to get hands on with the game, and what a treat it was.

Skill is the key
Within this preview event I got to play as the main character Kliff in a small segment from the game. In the full launch we will get to venture into the large continent of Pywel, but sadly I didn’t get to see this, this time! I’m looking forward to checking out the various towns and biomes we might get. If you’re looking forward to Crimson Desert, why not check the Steam Page here and give it a wishlist!

Polygon checked out Crimson Desert:

Crimson Desert’s wild combat left me skeptical at Gamescom

Targeting and camera issues hampered the otherwise flashy action

With one of the game industry’s most popular MMOs, Black Desert Online, under its belt, developer Pearl Abyss is shifting to a single-player open-world action game with Crimson Desert. As someone who dabbled with Black Desert but lacked the dedication to stick with it, I’ve been looking forward to Crimson Desert’s solo-minded approach and I enthusiastically embarked on a hands-on slice of the game during Gamescom. Yet while Crimson Desert teems with dangerous, mythical threats, my fiercest opponent reared its head on a systems level.

Crimson Desert unfolds on the vast continent of Pywel and puts players in the bloodstained shoes of brooding mercenary Kliff. A band of fellow swords-for-hire accompanies Kilff on his mission to save this beleaguered land, though I didn’t see much of it in the Gamescom demo, which focused on melee action via four selectable boss fights.
