Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Deep Dive

by Hiddenx, 20:42

IGN talked with creative director John Epler about Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

How Dragon Age: The Veilguard Grapples With the Series’ Wildly Expansive Lore (and Your Choices in It)

Creative director John Epler dives deep into the lore of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the emphasis on not contradicting previous choices, and more.

Somewhat famously, the fourth game in the Dragon Age series has gone through a lot of changes in the ten years since Dragon Age: Inquisition. What’s now known as Dragon Age: The Veilguard began development in 2015 and in that time, reports emerged of Dragon Age 4 going the live-service route, with a heavy multiplayer component.

The eventual confirmation that EA would let BioWare go full single-player with Dragon Age 4, keeping with the series’ history, led to a major sigh of relief from many fans. And when I got my hands on the game last month for our IGN First coverage (read my full preview here), I struggled to catch any whiffs of its multiplayer past in the gameplay, so I can only imagine the overhaul that was done behind the scenes.

But, interestingly, there was one thing that Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s creative director, John Epler, tells me never changed throughout the near-decade of development: “There was never a version of the story of Dragon Age 4 where Solas was not at the center,” he says. Basically, if you were worried that the name change from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf to The Veilguard would mean we’re not focused on Solas, think again.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Preview @ IGN

by Hiddenx, 17:12

IGN checked out Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Exclusive First Hands-On Preview

We spent hours of time with Dragon Age: The Veilguard: here's what we thought.

It’s been ten long years since Dragon Age: Inquisition and the expectations for the next game in the series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, seem impossible. A full decade, a bevy of behind-the-scenes changes, cuts at BioWare, and a somewhat divisive start when its unveiling began in earnest in June made me a little worried for my most highly anticipated game of the year. But one of my biggest concerns was my impression, based on early previews, that it was headed in the direction of being a linear action game rather than its more open-world predecessor. While Dragon Age is known for changing its style with each installment, I hoped dearly that it wouldn’t lose too much of the DA DNA I fell in love with.

After hours of hands-on time spread across two days, I’m pleased to say I walked away with excitement and curiosity, but mostly, relief to wave many of my concerns goodbye. My time with The Veilguard covered a wide smattering of things: the incredibly expansive character creator (more on that later), the introductory quests, a faction mission, and a companion quest a little deeper into the game. But I was mostly pleased with my ability to just explore Northern Thedas in all its gorgeously designed glory, experiencing a setting in Dragon Age lore that we’ve really only heard about.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Photo Mode

by Hiddenx, 20:34

IGN explains the photo mode of Dragon Age: The Veilgard:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Photo Mode Details: 15 Exclusive Screenshots and How It Was Inspired by Mass Effect

We take a look at The Veilguard's photo mode and reveal a host of new screenshots as part of our ongoing IGN First.

When Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases in October, it will include a first for the series — a fully-featured photo mode that will let fans capture personalized moments within Thedas. Photo modes have become a common sight in big-budget games in the years since the release of Dragon Age: Inqusition, but it nevertheless marks an important milestone for BioWare's fantasy series.

Happily, Dragon Age: The Veilguard's version of the popular mode has plenty of toys for fans who want to indulge their dreams of being a fantasy photographer. Here's some of what The Veilguard's photo mode has to offer.

  • Free-roaming camera, tilt, focal length, and lens distortion
  • Depth of Field
  • Auto Focus
  • Distance
  • F-Stop, which lets you control the lighting
  • Vignette mode, which darkens the edge of the screen and gives it a more cinematic look
  • Bloom strength
  • Saturation, brightness, and contrast
  • The ability to hide the player, the party, enemies, or NPCs

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Doles Out More Reveals

Amid a flurry of RPG news and announcements at the end of August, Bioware continues the hype train for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, one of the fall’s most anticipated titles.

The latest: new videos on the warrior class’ combat abilities, more details on the Veilguard’s companions, a developer Q&A on Discord, and last (but certainly not least): the debut episode of Dragon Age: Vows and Vengeance, an eight-part narrative podcast series taking place in the Dragon Age universe.

We forgive you if you missed some of the bigger details; it’s been a heckuva week. Overall, it continues to be an exciting time to be a Dragon Age fan, so let’s break it all down for you.

New Gameplay Videos Showcase Warrior Class
We start with the oldest bit of news, yet arguably the most impressive. Back on August 24th, Bioware published a blog post with four new gameplay videos offering a look into the combat system and how players can strategically customize the loadouts of Rook and their companions to challenge Thedas’ threats on the field. You can find the first below, with the rest on the official YouTube channel.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Choices Players Make Will Affect Different Outcomes, More Customization, Combat Details Discussed

While Dragon Age: The Veilguard looks to be a deep action-RPG that will last for dozens of hours before the curtains roll, it seems BioWare will want players to play through it more than once, as the studio has put in incentives for gamers to finish the game multiple times, and one of those is with player choice.

Same as with BioWare’s past RPGs like Mass Effect, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will offer players choices that will affect different outcomes in the game. This means that, depending on your choice, you might or might not see certain pieces of content within the game. In addition to that, from a gameplay perspective, the three classes available in the RPG will also play differently, which should further incentivize gamers to replay the game playing as a different class than the first one they chose in their first play through.

This info was revealed by BioWare during a recent Discord live Q&A. In the session, the studio also talked about combat, exploration, companions and a lot more. You can check out the discussed topics in the Q&A list below (via shinobi).

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Morrigan's Redesign

by Hiddenx, 18:59

Learn more about Morrigan's Redesign at The Gamer:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Creative Director Explains Morrigan's Redesign

Key Takeaways

  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard's creative director explains the process of redesigning returning characters.
  • In the case of Morrigan, he says that her new look reflects her personal journey, as she accepts what happened with her mother, Flemeth.
  • He also suggests that Morrigan's crown might not be the same one Flemeth wore, but rather a "variation" of it.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's creative director, John Epler, has shared the thought process behind Morrigan's redesign. This comes after the latest trailer for the game revealed that the fan-favourite mage is coming back, albeit looking quite different than when we last saw her.

In his answer, Epler also confirms that Morrigan is wearing a "variation" of Flemeth's crown, whereas many fans suspected it was the exact same crown. With this in mind, it might disprove the theory that this version of the character is actually Flemeth (or more accurately, the spirit of Mythal), possessing Morrigan's body.

Lethality and Levelling - An inside look into Rook’s Warrior combat

Hello everyone,

Since our summer reveal in June, we’ve been reading all the great excitement for the game and listening closely to what you’d like to see next. Our reveal trailer showed off the prologue and very beginning of the game, and now we want to shift our focus to higher level combat. Today, we’re going to cover our game’s combat system, looking at how Rook and Companions can be built up to meet the perils facing Thedas, using deep RPG systems.

This starts with choosing a desired class as there are three main classes to select from when creating Rook: stalwart Warrior, deft Rogue, or spell-slinging Mage. This blog and accompanying videos will focus on the Warrior class, and we’ll have more to share on the other classes before launch.

Prepare for Battle

By choosing Warrior, the fighting style revolves around close range combat and defense. Skills, Traits, Runes, and Abilities are customizable to best suit that type of playstyle. The loadout will have slots for Abilities, accessed from the Ability Wheel. Picking which Abilities from the many in the arsenal to bring into battle is a strategic choice made for each encounter, and they can be swapped out anytime, except during combat. For some added depth, there are up to three equipable Runes. Runes provide a variety of control, utility, or additional damage to synergize with your build. While in combat, all three Runes can be cycled through and activated.

There are a wide range of potential Abilities that are unique to each Class and can be customized by spending Skill Points. For example, the Warrior class will have certain abilities that deal fire damage. Players can plan their build around this, and each skill point spent could be in pursuit of this build. Each step taken is designed to augment Rook and/or Abilities.

Eventually, Rook will gain access to Specializations, which grant powerful Abilities, unique to each Specialization. These Specializations will also provide a unique Ultimate Ability (more on that later below) tuned to the theme of that Specialization, so a Warrior specializing as a Grey Warden Champion will gain access to the devastating incendiary Warden’s Fire that launches a flurry of searing strikes that ignite foes like tinder. This is the best Specialization Area for defeating darkspawn, an enemy that many Dragon Age fans know well. Check out all the Specialization Areas below (minor gameplay spoilers) and we’ll have a separate spotlight on progression later as well.

Warrior Rook Specialization Areas:

  • Reaper - Become night's blade. Steal life and risk death to gain incredible, unnatural abilities
  • Slayer - Leap into the fray. Wield massive, punishing weapons while rushing enemies to deal devastating blows.
  • Champion - Be the shield. Shrug off damage while summoning righteous fire down on enemies.

Rogue Rook Specialization Areas:

  • Duelist - Draw your steel. Parry and dodge past enemies to gain strength with every strike.
  • Saboteur - Set the stage. Deploy explosives and turrets that devastate enemies, then pick them off with arrows.
  • Veil Ranger - Hunt the enemy. Snipe enemies from afar using artifacts that charge arrows with dangerous, powerful magic.

Mage Rook Specialization Areas:

  • Death Caller - Embrace the dark. Drain life from enemies and cast spells that writhe with the essence of death itself
  • Evoker - Call the void. Freeze enemies in their tracks, then summon the deepest cold to tear them apart.
  • Spellblade - Be the storm. Channel potent spells for close-quarters combat infused with lightning's wrath.

Learn more about Dragon Age: The Veilguard on the PC:

PC Features for Dragon Age: The Veilguard

A look into the PC Experience in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Hello everyone,

Today, we want to specifically touch on the PC experience for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The Dragon Age franchise started out on PC, and we wanted to make sure PC is a great place to play our game. Many of us at BioWare are PC players ourselves, and when testing, PCs made up 40% of our platform testing effort, with over 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing. Getting the PC experience just right was crucial to us and we created a dedicated team to focus on PC. We can’t wait for you to experience it for yourselves!

Let’s talk about inputs first. We wanted to ensure the controls and UI are a good experience for both KBM and controllers; so we did close to 10,000 hours of user research testing to make sure of it. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will feature native support for PS5 DualSense controllers with haptics support in addition to the standard of Xbox controllers & keyboard + mouse. Additionally, you can seamlessly transition between controllers or keyboard + mouse while playing or in menus. There are many different ways to play our game; so, in order to allow you to find the most comfortable set-up, we’ve added the ability to customize class-specific keybinds that you can easily switch between. This means that your Rogue Rook can use a different set of keybinds than your Warrior Rook, if you’d like!

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Learned from Anthem

by Hiddenx, 16:46

Exputer reports that Bioware learned from Anthem:

Dragon Age Director Says Anthem Taught BioWare To Focus Only On “What You’re Good At”

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a perfect chance for redemption.

Story Highlights

  • The Dragon Age director has said Anthem taught BioWare to focus on only its strengths.
  • He said that when you are good at something, then double down on it.
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard will drop later this year for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

In an interview with Edge Magazine (thanks, 80 Level), Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s creative director, John Epler, said that Anthem taught BioWare to focus only on “what you’re good at.” The dev noted that it understands that you should double down on your strengths. Therefore, the devs are prepared to nail down the sequel and avoid the mess that happened with Anthem.

I’m proud of a lot of things on Anthem – I was on that project for a year and a half. But at the end of the day, we were building a game focused on something we were not necessarily as proficient at. For me and for the team, the biggest lesson was to know what you’re good at and then double down on it. Don’t spread yourselves too thin,” says the director.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Interview

by Hiddenx, 20:20

Gameinformer talked with Bioware about the Dragon Age series:

BioWare On Returning To The Dragon Age Series, 10 Years After Inquisition

With 10 years between 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition, the most recent release in the series, and the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latter has much riding on it. It's both a follow-up to a beloved game from a decade ago in one of BioWare’s most beloved series, and it's the first BioWare game since the launch of 2019's Anthem, a live-service multiplayer effort EA sunset less than two years later.

Curious about the pressure surrounding the release of Veilguard, I spoke to BioWare about lessons learned from following up on Inquisition and what it's been like returning to this series so many years later.

"We start out in pre-production," BioWare general manager Gary McKay tells me when I ask about BioWare's guiding principle for developing Veilguard. "We spent a lot of time iterating, experimenting, and innovating on different things. At one point, it was multiplayer – we did a hard look at multiplayer, but we felt we really couldn't return to our roots. And when we asked ourselves, 'What is the game that we want to develop,' we really wanted to get back to our roots, which is amazing storytelling. It's about those unforgettable characters. And it's about having the opportunity to influence the world.

"And we really felt multiplayer wouldn't do that. But single-player RPG is really where we wanted to spend our time, so after spending that time in pre-production, really honing in on what the vision of this game is, and [being] afforded the opportunity to deliver on the creative promise of this game, [now] we're really excited about what's coming out."

McKay says Veilguard blends seasoned veterans with new voices and perspectives, and "that's really important for this game." For example, people like former Dragon Age producer Mark Darrah, who left the studio in 2021 but is now consulting for Veilguard, and creative director John Epler together have decades of experience at BioWare. They work with people like game director Corinne Busche, who joined BioWare shortly after the launch of Anthem (but brings in a love of Dragon Age from the series' 2009 start), every day to develop the game we'll be playing this fall.

Wccftech checked out Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Has the Most Complex, Fully Realized Companions We’ve Ever Crafted, Says BioWare

In a new interview published today by Game Informer, Dragon Age: The Veilguard Game Director Corinne Busche reckons the upcoming game has the most complex and fully realized companions ever crafted by BioWare.

That's a tall order, given the studio's legendary track of roleplaying games, which includes Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age itself. Busche has an explanation, though:

They're complicated, they have complicated problems, and that's what's interesting. As much as I adore the companions and the journeys I've been on with them in past Dragon Age titles – previously, it feels like companions are going on an adventure with me, the main character, whether it's the Hero of Ferelden or Hawke, you name it. But in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, in many ways, the companions are so fleshed out that it feels as though I'm going on a journey with them. I'm exploring how they think and feel; I'm helping them through their problems. We're working through their unique character arcs. They feel like my dear friends, and I absolutely adore them.

We've really moved into a place where you can have the highest of highs, and it can be colorful, it can be optimistic, but also, you can have the lowest of lows where it gets gritty, it gets painful, it gets quite dark. But throughout it all, there is a sense of optimism. And it creates this delightful throughline throughout the game.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Overview

by Hiddenx, 18:41

Couchpotato spotted another Dragon Age: The Veilguard overview on WCCFTech:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Everything You Need to Know About the First Dragon Age in a Decade

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

With Dragon Age: The Veilguard finally heading toward its long-awaited release, this article will bring you up to speed on every facet of the action RPG, from its troubled development to its confirmed features, story beats, and setting.

The project has had multiple iterations over time. Shortly after the successful release of Dragon Age: Inquisition in late 2014, BioWare's Game Director Mike Laidlaw outlined plans for a new installment codenamed Joplin. This would have been a smaller game focused on a 'heist' in the region of the Tevinter Imperium magocracy. This iteration was canceled in late 2017 (with Laidlaw leaving the company around the same time) as Electronic Arts attempted to pivot the game to a live service design. Back then, this new Dragon Age (codenamed Morrison) was described as 'Anthem with dragons'.

That wasn't the last major change in direction. Following the massive failure of Anthem and the success of Respawn's single player game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, EA eventually reconsidered its own stance and allowed BioWare to ditch live service elements, resuming development as a single player only title.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard was previously known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, but the team has recently decided to change the name to reflect the game's focus on the player's companions rather than on one of the (supposed) villains.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Classes and Factions

by Hiddenx, 17:52

Learn more about the classes and factions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on Gameinformer:

Breaking Down Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Classes And Factions

As part of the character creation process for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, players will have to select both a class for their player-controlled Rook and a faction. After customizing much of your Rook's body, including things like a Qunari's horn type and material, for example, with the hundreds of options available in Veilguard, it will be time to pick said class.

There are three classes to choose from: Rogue, Mage, and Warrior. As the names suggest, each features a unique combat system and plays differently as a result. Though you’ll be performing things like light and heavy attacks using the same buttons, what those attacks do varies based on your class. For example, a sword-and-shield Warrior can hip-fire or aim their shield to throw it like Captain America, whereas a Mage can use that same button to throw out magical ranged attacks – read more about the combat of Veilguard in Game Informer's exclusive feature here. Plus, as you spec out these classes and unlock their individual specializations, the differences will only grow even more stark.

  • The Rogue has access to three specializations. The Duelist is the fastest of the three, with two blades for rapid strikes; the Saboteur uses tricks and traps; and the Veil Ranger is purely range, sniping enemies from afar with a bow.
  • The Mage can utilize necromancy with the Death Caller specialization; Evokers wield fire, ice, and lightning; and the Spellblade uses magic-infused melee attacks.
  • The Warrior can become a Reaper, which uses night blades to steal life and risk death to gain unnatural abilities; a Slayer, a simple but strong two-handed weapons expert; or the Champion, a tactical defense fighter.

While these specializations don't matter upfront – you class into them via the skill trees you progress through the game – it's nice to see the potential of each class before you choose it.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Deep Dive

by Hiddenx, 17:14

Gameinformer checked out Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

A Deep Dive Into Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Combat, Abilities, Skill Tree, And More

If you're at all familiar with the Dragon Age series, you likely already know BioWare has experimented quite a lot with its gameplay. From Dragon Age: Origins' real-time strategy RPG approach to Dragon Age II's mostly-set-within-one-city action experience to Dragon Age: Inquisition's strategy-action mix, BioWare hasn't quite defined the franchise's combat. However, a through-line is apparent from Origins to Inquisition: BioWare seemingly wants this franchise to be action but has attempted to shift to that without abandoning its longtime fans.

With Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare has completed its transition from strategy to real-time action, but thanks to an optional tactical pause-and-play combat wheel that harkens back to the series' origins, I feel it's found a great (battle)ground for Dragon Age combat. Of course, it's hard to tell how Veilguard's action will hold up over what is sure to be a dozens-of-hours-long RPG, but if what I've seen so far is any indication, the studio is on to something.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Only two Companions

by Hiddenx, 19:02

Rock Paper Shotgun reports that the party in Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be a small one:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard strips your RPG party down to two companions, but they'll be "deeper" with a lot more banter

The most banter ever

"Two's company, three's a crowd," the saying goes, unless the first two are warriors and the third one is a priest, in which case the superior proverb is surely "three's a moderately balanced squad, two's a massive liability"? Here to put such kitchen wisdom to the test is BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which "only" allows you to bring two companions into the fray, one fewer than 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition. It's another indication that this will be more biffy action game than thinky party-based RPG. The upside, assuming you find that last sentence disappointing, is that exploration and combat will be more "intimate", and individual characters will have more screentime to bounce off each other and flourish as personalities. All this comes care of a BioWare Discord Q&A from late last week, which you can watch in full below.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - The RPG Systems

by Hiddenx, 18:13

RPG Site spoke with director Corinne Busche about the RPG systems of Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s director talks RPG systems, skill trees, and being inspired by Final Fantasy XII

Dragon Age: The Veilguard was fully revealed with a flurry of exciting activity this week, with BioWare putting out a trailer, some gameplay footage, and a bunch of information. But as the promotional material focuses on courting the mainstream with dazzling action-led footage and its cast of characters, it of course has led to one key fan outcry: is it still a role-playing game?

Naturally, we were interested in that too. The hands-on offered glimpses of an incredible character creator, interesting dialogue choices, and some consequences for those choices - all role-playing staples. But what about combat? What about good old-fashioned RPG character progression and growth, which in many ways is the bedrock of the genre?

After seeing the hands-off demo, we got a chance to briefly chat with Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche - who right away gushes about being a real RPG system nerd. I get the impression we could’ve sat and talked about classic RPGs and their mechanics for hours; she is one of us. In our brief chat, she expands on how The Veilguard’s progression, growth, and skill tree work - revealing granular information not present in the demo shown so far. Here’s our chat.

RPG Site: So, can you just broadly talk to me about… in that preview, we don’t even see the menu, right? So can you talk to me about where the game sits and what it’s like in terms of that RPG progression, from the perspective of hardcore RPG fans?

Corinne Busche: Incredibly deep! So if I were to contrast Mass Effect versus Dragon Age, for instance… I really view Mass Effect as an ARPG. Big action, minor RPG. We're almost the total inverse of that.

So a few missions in, you unlock the skill tree right away, Every level up, you get skill points, of course. The skill tree is absolutely enormous and it is bespoke for your class. So when we talk about the specializations, we know that skill trees can be overwhelming to players as well. So what I love – I'll try to paint a picture for you….

When it is unlocked, imagine almost a gigantic spider web-like visual. And if I'm a mage right at the very center is the core of the Mage kit.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Overview

by Hiddenx, 14:25

Wccftech is giving an overview of Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Features Companions Ability Wheel for Strategic Combat; Romance Has No Limitations

Yesterday, BioWare revealed Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the official new title for the upcoming installment in the roleplaying game franchise. The studio decided to drop the previous title (Dreadwolf) to place a bigger emphasis on the player character and his seven companions rather than on the villain of the story.

The focus on companions appears clear everywhere in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Speaking to IGN, BioWare General Manager Gary McKay detailed the new companions' ability wheel players will encounter in combat.

As an RPG, strategy in combat is important as you bring two companions to every fight. Each companion brings unique powers and abilities that have a direct impact on how you choose to take down the enemies at hand. To add another layer to that strategic element, we’re introducing a new ability wheel where you can pause the action and set up your next move – whether it’s your companions’ abilities or your own.

The ability wheel opens up a huge amount of strategic possibilities, giving players the ability to control the flow of combat and link powerful combinations of abilities between players and their companions that can quickly turn the tide of any battle. We think we’ve found an exciting balance between fun, fluidity, and strategy for every encounter.

There's a couple of notable tidbits here. First, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is reducing the party size from four to three, explaining why the game will have fewer available companions than Inquisition (seven instead of nine). Secondly, while not outright confirmed, the ability wheel appears to corroborate the previous rumor that players would not be able to directly control party members. It sounds like it will be very similar to Mass Effect, which also featured a party of three characters with two companions that could be issued orders.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will also remove any limitations on companion romances, pivoting from the previous franchise entry, where companions had gender and/or race preferences (and some of them, like Varric and Cole, could not be romanced at all).

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf - Now called Dragon Age: The Veilguard

by Hiddenx, 20:10

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf got a new name: Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The Next Dragon Age Has a New Title

Hi everyone,

Summer is nearly upon us, and as promised, we’re ready to provide an update on our big reveal. We’d like to invite the world to join us on Tuesday, June 11, for the official first look at gameplay for the next Dragon Age!

After Dragon Age: Inquisition launched, the studio was given an incredible opportunity to explore, test, and validate a variety of gameplay concepts as we worked to determine what the next Dragon Age could look like. We brought everything to the table which, yes, even included a multiplayer concept. The time we spent experimenting and iterating gradually taught us a lot. This work, and the amazing support from EA, helped us re-focus on creating an incredible single player game, with all the choices, characters and world building you’d expect from us.

At BioWare, we create worlds of adventure, conflict and companionship, where you’re at the center of it all. As fans of our franchise know, every Dragon Age game has delivered a new standalone story. Set in the world of Thedas, these tales explore epic locales and threats, always thrusting you into a new conflict. Each game also introduces a new lead hero – The Warden, Hawke, The Inquisitor – that you can call your own. You can expect all that, and more, with the new game. And of course, much like your unique hero, it wouldn’t be a Dragon Age game without an amazing cast of companions – right?

Each of the seven unique characters that make up your companions will have deep and compelling storylines where the decisions you make will impact your relationships with them – as well as their lives. You’ll unite this team of unforgettable heroes as you take on a terrifying new threat unleashed on the world. Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience.

So, to capture what this game is all about, we changed the name as the original title didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas.

We proudly introduce to you Dragon Age™: The Veilguard.

We know you’ve been waiting a long time for this reveal and we’re so ready to show you what we’ve been up to. We’ll see you on Tuesday, June 11th at 8:00am PT at the Dragon Age YouTube channel with over 15 minutes of gameplay from the opening moments of the game that has you jumping back into Thedas on your new adventure.

This moment means so much to everyone at BioWare, and we wouldn’t be here without you. We’re ready to have some fun, so join the chat early…we’ve got a few special surprises for you.

Thank you for all your support. See you soon,

Gary McKay

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf - Stepping Away From the Warrior, Mage, and Rogue?

by Silver, 21:53

Gamerant posted an opinion piece on the possibility that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will be moving away from the Warrior, Mage, and Rogue classes of previous games. This was prompted by rumours of a God of War style system.

Highlights

  • Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will supposedly have a shift to action combat instead of the previous hybrid system, which may be a significant departure from the gameplay of its predecessor.
  • There are rumors of a possible faction-based class system or even the removal of classes altogether in Dreadwolf, which many fans believe would be a mistake.
  • The skill tree prototype shared by BioWare suggests a different approach to character abilities, potentially sacrificing the series' identity and the importance of team dynamics in gameplay.

[...]

Dragon Age's Classes and Origins

One specific fan theory goes that all Warriors will be Grey Wardens, all Rogues Antivan Crows, and all Mages Tevinters. However, this feels like a pretty massive step backward. Dragon Age: Origins features six backgrounds based on their race and class. Inquisition technically has six, though they were criticized for being too limited due to forcing dwarf players to be Carta members and lacking a city elf option. Dreadwolf only having three character backstories tied to class would strike many fans as unnecessary railroading.

It also doesn’t make much sense with the lore. The entire point of Dragon Age’s Grey Wardens is people from all walks of life dedicating themselves to fighting the Darkspawn. They have never been exclusively Warriors, with Rogue and Mage Wardens appearing in all three games.

Doing away with classes entirely would also be a mistake, but that may be where the game is heading. Those who have seen the game compared its combat to the God of War reboot. If this is accurate, it’s unclear if Dragon Age’s rigidly defined classes would even work with Dreadwolf’s more hack-and-slash gameplay. BioWare might have decided it doesn't, doing away with strict classes altogether.

Dragon Age 4: Dreadwolf has been in the works for quite some time, and rumors suggested the game could release worldwide later this year. Unfortunately, it seems like the wait for the next entry in the series by BioWare will be a little longer, as the game will not release before April 2024.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf - Now in Alpha

by Silver, 10:36

A game update from EA announces that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is now in Alpha.

Hello,

In my last blog, back in February, I talked about the next Dragon Age™ game entering the production phase. Well, we’ve come a very long way since then, and the team is incredibly happy to announce a huge step forward in the development of the game you now know as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf™: We have just completed our Alpha milestone!

Up to this point, we’ve been working hard on the various parts of the game, but it’s not until the Alpha milestone that a game all comes together. Now, for the first time, we can experience the entire game, from the opening scenes of the first mission to the very end. We can see, hear, feel, and play everything as a cohesive experience.

NOW WHAT?

Of course, the game is not finished by any means, but Alpha is one of the most important game development milestones for a number of reasons. First and foremost, we can now turn our sights toward bringing the visual fidelity to its final form and iterating on gameplay features. The big question now is, “Where do we focus our efforts?” To answer that, we solicit feedback from a number of sources, including our Community Council members who each have unique perspectives and experiences, our quality verification team, and extensive internal playtesting. Gathering feedback from multiple sources gives us the greatest insight on where we need to spend more time improving the experience.

Additionally, we can now evaluate the game's pacing, how relationships evolve over time, and the player’s progression, as well as narrative cohesion—essentially how the story comes together. We can take the story we’ve written and see if we’re expressing it well through the characters, dialogue, cinematics, and ultimately, the player’s journey. Now that we have the ability to do a complete playthrough, we can iterate and polish on the things that matter most to our fans.

Hitting Alpha was the culmination of so much effort from the entire team and we used this milestone as an opportunity to come together and celebrate. We held a hybrid-style event with people onsite while others joined remotely and the team showcased their work to everyone at BioWare. We even took some time to do something fun and non-work related—a virtual escape room where we had to work together to help someone on camera find their way out. It was a really great time, and no matter where our devs are, it's important to share these types of moments together.

START TO FINISH

Now that we’re finally able to experience the entire game, for me, my favorite part is the characters. Whether followers, allies, or villains, they’re woven into the game in ways that take a concept that’s always been a part of the Dragon Age DNA—stories about people—and push it further than ever before. The characters help contextualize the world and the stakes, and I can’t wait until we’re able to start really discussing them in depth.

It’s also exciting to finally be able to bring our fans to parts of the world that we’ve previously hinted at, but never been able to fully explore—like the city of Minrathous, the capital of the Tevinter Empire. We’ve talked about Minrathous in previous games, and now you’ll finally be able to visit! It’s a city built on and fuelled by magic, and the ways in which that has come through in its visual identity, and what that looks like in comparison to previous cities we’ve visited in Dragon Age, are pretty spectacular.

As I mentioned earlier, the Alpha milestone is an extremely important one for us, but there’s more work to be done. We also want to continue being transparent with you, our community, and keep you up to date on what we’re crafting. Hopefully you’ve been enjoying our development updates on Dreadwolf this year as we’ll be looking to share more in the future.

IN CLOSING

Of course, Dreadwolf isn’t the only thing happening here at BioWare™! We have a team hard at work envisioning what the future holds for a new single-player Mass Effect™ game. And we look forward to celebrating our community on N7 Day next month. The SWTOR team also continues to work on their next update, so keep an eye on SWTOR.com and their social media accounts for any and all details on the coming game update.

It’s an incredible time at BioWare! We have so many cool things to show you in the future. Until then, thanks for being part of our community. We couldn’t do this without you.

Stay well,

Gary McKay

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is the name of the next game in the Dragon Age series:

Our Next Adventure — Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

Our next game now has an official name. We know you’ve anxiously awaited new details, and today we’re excited to reveal the official title of the next adventure across the lands of Thedas - Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Who is the Dread Wolf?

Solas, the Dread Wolf. Some say he might be an ancient elven god, but some say not. Others say a betrayer of his people…or a savior who now seeks to rescue them at the cost of your world. His motives are inscrutable and his methods sometimes questionable, earning him a reputation as something of a trickster deity—a player of dark and dangerous games.

Dragon Age 4 - BioWare Teases, Releases 2 Short Stories

Dragon Age Day Teases New Game News & Unveils Two Short Stories

In celebration of Dragon Age Day 2021, series developer Bioware expands the franchise's world while teasing announcements about its next installment.

In honor of this year's Dragon Age Day, creator BioWare released two original short stories and teased some upcoming news about Dragon Age 4. The annual fan celebration of the fantasy role-playing series is held on December 4, with BioWare officially joining in on the festivities in 2019. With the franchise's last installment launching back in 2014, many fans are eager for updates on Dragon Age 4's development.

In honor of Dragon Age Day 2021, BioWare has released two unique short stories while also hinting at further details about the game. Last year, the developer created four short stories taking place within the massive fantasy world of Dragon Age, and this year two more adventures follow suit. The first tale, Won't Know When, sees two Grey Warden monster hunters resting in-between encounters with the dreaded Darkspawn. The Eternal Flame, meanwhile, tells the tale of two necromancers who must give peace to a wailing spirit. Alongside these world-building tales, the Dragon Age team also teased news about the franchise's next installment will be revealed in 2022.

In an email sent by BioWare to its staff, the developer revealed that Goldman has left the studio, with the two parties “mutually agreeing to part ways”, although there’s no mention of what brought about this departure. Goldman first joined BioWare in 1998. In his first stint at the studio, which lasted over seven years, he worked on Baldur’s Gate and Jade Empire. He rejoined in 2009, following which he worked on every game in the Dragon Age series, and was also involved in the development of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Dragon Age 4 - No Cross-Gen Release

by Silver, 06:55

VentureBeat reports that there will be no cross-gen release for Dragon Age 4 meaning no PS4 or XBOX One release.

Dragon Age 4 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but it will not get versions for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. This isn’t too shocking, but it does show that developers like BioWare are ready to leave the last-gen consoles behind. This news comes from the LinkedIn profile for Dragon Age’s lead player designer at BioWare (hat tip to Faizan Shaikh). But I’ve also separately confirmed that EA is planning the game only for the new-gen systems.

Moving on to new hardware seems like the natural order for video game software development, but it’s something that many companies are shying away from. BioWare most recently released Mass Effect: Legendary Edition in May. But that collection didn’t even get a version native to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. Instead, EA and BioWare released it only for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and then used the backward compatibility on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Dragon Age 4 - Minrathous City

by Silver, 22:51

The Gamer talks about the city of Minrathous and what it could mean for the story of Dragon Age 4.

As well as its huge, sprawling size and impressive defences, Minrathous is a visual spectacle. It features looming towers, magical aura in the air, unimaginable wealth, and even mystical floating buildings. It’s also home to dark alleyways, murder around every corner, and abject poverty. It’s a city of vast contrasts, and Dragon Age 4 needs to explore these in depth.

Contrasts are a big theme across Dragon Age, but rarely are the contrasts as relatable as this. It’s the contrast between the Templars and the Mages, between the dwarves and the surface dwellers, between the Elves and the… slightly different type of Elves that Dragon Age has traditionally been built upon. These lead to interesting stories, but it makes it difficult to step inside the realities of the debate. Parallels can be drawn, but if Minrathous pushes the contrast between rich and poor - especially during a potential Qunari invasion - to the forefront, it could pull us into the heartbeat of the story instead of leaving us sitting on the sidelines, Googling the gameplay benefits of siding with one fictional faction over the other.

Dragon Age 4 - To Be Set in Tevinter

by Silver, 11:50

PC Gamer reports that Dragon Age 4 will be set in Tevinter.

We were already pretty sure that Dragon Age 4 will be set in the previously unseen realm of Tevinter. The Inquisitor stabs a knife directly into a map of the Tevinter Imperium at the end of the Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC Trespasser, for one thing, and BioWare pointed a finger in the same direction in 2020 with the release of a collection of short stories called Tevinter Nights.

The writing's been on the wall. But now, it's in an actual licensed book. Any doubts about the location of the new game have been dispelled by the recently released BioWare: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development, a book celebrating the studio's 25th anniversary with art, pictures, commentary, and stories. Tom Phillips of Eurogamer scored himself a copy, and found an official confirmation inside.

Dragon Age 4 - All the Rumours

by Silver, 06:35

PC Gamer talk about all the rumours around Dragon Age 4.

Which characters will be in Dragon Age 4?

Dragon Age has a history of reusing characters, like Varric Tethras who is a companion in both Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition, and cameos like Zevran who shows up in a Dragon Age 2 quest after being a party member in Dragon Age: Origins. It's safe to say that we'll see some familiar faces in Dragon Age 4, but which ones?

So far BioWare has committed to hanging up its protagonists between Dragon Age games. Each adventure comes with a new hero, though the Grey Warden and Hawke do have the ability to cameo in Dragon Age: Inquisition. It's possible we might then see an appearance of The Inquisitor player character in Dragon Age 4, but they'll likely not be center stage.

One character we know will play a part in the events of Dragon Age 4 is the Dread Wolf himself. Solas's voice is heard in the first teaser trailer for the game and his relationship to the greater struggles of Thedas means he's not going anywhere any time soon. Similarly, it would be a shock if Flemeth doesn't make a return as well. Flemeth and Solas, both elven legends or gods going by many names, seem to be central to the overarching plot of the series.

Wccftech reports on an Q2 2020 Earnings Call for EA in which it was stated that Dragon Age 4 would likely not be seen until sometime after March 2022.

...

Dragon Age fans will have to wait even longer, though, as CFO Blake Jorgensen said the next installment is probably coming after fiscal year 2022 (that is to say, after March 2022).

Yeah, I mean, you should assume that there's, you know, Dragon Age out there, and we talked about it publicly that it's in the works and probably comes after fiscal '22. But, you know, we typically don't give multiyear guidance this early in the year or multiyear guidance period. So I don't want to start giving '23 guidance now that I've started a hint on '22. But you should assume it's out there and plans are underway for that product, as well as some other products.

Indeed, BioWare will want to take enough time with Dragon Age 4 to try and erase the misstep of Anthem (and, to a lesser degree, of Mass Effect Andromeda). In early September, General Manager Casey Hudson shared that pre-production is going well, though clearly there is still lots of work to do. If this writer could hazard a guess on the launch window, it'd be early 2023.

Dragon Age 4 - Short Stories Show Setting

by Silver, 12:24

PC Gamer thinks that some Dragon Age 4 short stories indicate the setting for the game.

...
The Masked Empire, a novel that Weekes did write, was published 7 months prior to Dragon Age: Inquisition and revolved around several characters that later featured in important Inquisition story quests. It would seem to follow, then, that Tevinter Nights is likely the groundwork for stories or characters that will show up in Dragon Age 4. So far, there's no description of the book on its page other than a brief list of Weekes' credits so we can only guess who the characters on the front may be.

The collection of short stories published by Tor Books is set to come out on March 10th, 2020, according to Amazon.

Dragon Age 4 - Not Likely to be Good

by Silver, 09:35

HitC writes that Dragon Age 4 is screwed because of BioWare and not because of Anthem.

Yes, Dragon Age: Inquisition won Game of the Year in 2014, but – if we’re being frank – that was a terrible year for games thanks to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One having only launched in the previous year’s Fall. The only competition BioWare had to fend off for Game of the Year was Bayonetta 2, Dark Souls II, Hearthstone, and Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor (hardly the most competitive scene).

Mass Effect 3 was released back in 2012, and the quality of BioWare’s games have drastically declined. Inquisition winning Game of the Year says everything about how unremarkable 2014 was for video games, Mass Effect: Andromeda was middling to horrendous in 2017, and Anthem is the most boring, incomplete, and shallow game I have ever had the misfortune of picking up. And these horrid games all share two things in common: terrible stories and characters.

Dragon Age 4 - Cancelled Version Focused on Heists

by Silver, 11:58

USGamer reports that a cancelled version of Dragon Age 4 focused on heists.

"You'd play as a group of spies in Tevinter Imperium, a wizard-ruled country on the north end of Dragon Age's main continent, Thedas," a source told the site. "The goal was to focus as much as possible on choice and consequence, with smaller areas and fewer fetch quests than Dragon Age: Inquisition."

One developer said that BioWare wanted to focus on "repeat play" with "areas that changed over time and missions that branched in interesting ways based on your decisions, to the point where you could even get 'non-standard game overs' if you followed certain paths."

Dragon Age 4 - Top 10 Suggestions

by Silver, 19:24

Twinfinite suggests 10 things Dragon Age 4 can do to avoid becoming Mass Effect Andromeda.

Flesh Out Loyalty Quests for Companions

Speaking of companion characters, the Dragon Age series is begging for more fleshed out loyalty missions the player can take part in to gain their party members’ admiration.

Since they were used in Mass Effect 2, BioWare game fans have been eager to see loyalty missions applied to the developer’s fantasy RPG series. Being able to change the character’s outlook on the world, and meaningfully change their role in the rest of the game, is an appealing prospect few would want to pass up.

Watch the official Dragon Age Teaser Trailer revealed at the 2018 Game Awards in Los Angeles, CA. I suspect you have questions #TheDreadWolfRises

More: http://x.ea.com/54263.

Hey everyone,

We have been working on a new Dragon Age™ game for quite a while now and I am pleased to finally tease the existence of this project!

While we won’t be sharing any details for now, I can tell you we have been building a new team around a core of Dragon Age veterans, people I’ve worked with on Dragon Age, Jade Empire™, and some of whom I’ve worked with since the Baldur’s Gate days.

While I have been focused on Anthem™, the rest of the team has been hard at work exploring ways to push BioWare’s storytelling to the next level.

I’m so excited to show you more!

Mark Darrah, Executive Producer

Making players into heroes of their own stories has been my real-life quest since Baldur’s Gate.

Over the years I’ve taken on increasing challenges: building vast living worlds, devising fun party-based combat and illustrating fantastic stories. Now, I’m honored and excited to continue BioWare’s rich legacy of colorful companions, romance and epic choices in my favorite fantasy franchise.

We’ve gathered our strongest team yet and are venturing forth on the most epic quest ever!

Dragon Age 4 - Story and Character focused

by Silver, 06:37

@PCGamesN The next Dragon Age game is in progress and will be story and character focused.

loading...

Update, January 25, 2018: BioWare's general manager has offered a teaser about the development of the new Dragon Age game.

Casey Hudson, general manager at Bioware, has tweeted to reveal some new information about the new Dragon Age game. The game's official existence was announced yesterday by executive producer Mark Darrah.

Here's everything we know about Dragon Age 4.

Hudson tweeted to say that the studio has already had "lots of feedback" regarding the project, but that "I think you'll be relieved to see what the team is working on," saying that the game will be "story & character focused."

Those are scant details, but Hudson himself acknowledges it's "too early" to say any more. Kotaku recently reported that, post Anthem, Bioware would be incorporating more 'live' elements into the game, but Hudson says that for Dragon Age, this "just means designing a game for continued storytelling after the main story."

Dragon Age 4 - Not Confirmed

by Silver, 13:31

Gamerant reports that Dragon Age 4 is not confirmed but there is a project happening.

BioWare Creative Director Says Dragon Age 4 is Not Confirmed

When fans of the beloved Dragon Age franchise caught word that studio BioWare was working on a new Dragon Age game, chaos and excitement ensued. But now, those dreams have seemingly been dashed to a slight degree. Dragon Age creative director Mike Laidlaw has stated that Dragon Age 4 isn't definitively set in stone just yet.

It began on Twitter, when a Dragon Age fan asked Laidlaw about the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s final DLC, Trespasser. "Mike, is there a chance that DA4 starts before Trespasser, so Trespasser becomes AU? Or is [the] DLC ending canon?" user @LeidaPaleo questioned. Laidlaw responded simply: "DA4 is not confirmed. Trespasser is canon."

Dragon Age 4 - Writing the Next Dragon Age

by Silver, 09:34

Eurogamer chats with the Sunless Sea creator Alexis Kennedy and ask how things are going on Dragon Age 4.

His appointment was notable for a couple of reasons. Sure, it was tacit confirmation the Dragon Age team was beginning to staff up. But Kennedy himself had secured a unique position. BioWare is a Canadian company, headquartered in Edmonton. He is British, based in Greenwich, and has not relocated for the job. BioWare does not often employ remote workers, and almost never remote writers: the people who lay down the earliest brushstrokes of a game's world and its characters during the earliest and most formative of its stages.

All the better for us, though, that we could catch up with Kennedy and see how things were going. It has, to address the elephant in the room, been a trying period for his new employer. BioWare is still licking its wounds from the recent, bruising reaction to Mass Effect Andromeda. The company's next project to release will be its recently-delayed and untested new IP, codenamed Dylan. Meanwhile, Dragon Age is still in its early stages. How was he fitting in?

"It's an unusual arrangement," Kennedy admits, chatting via video call from his London home. As a (very) remote worker, Skype is something of a necessity for him - although with different divisions dotted across North America, it's not unusual for BioWare to communicate with its staff from afar. "It's a multi-studio company spread across Edmonton, Montreal [which developed Mass Effect Andromeda] and Austin [home to Star Wars: The Old Republic]," he continues, "though yes - it doesn't have guest writers, as a rule."

Dragon Age 4 - Rumors of its Existence

by Myrthos, 08:56

JDR13 pointed us to Playstation Universe where they think that Dragon Age 4 just might be a thing.

Voice actress Alix Wilton Regan has hinted that BioWare is working on the long-rumored Dragon Age 4 for PS4 and Xbox One.

Regan, who provided the voice for the female Elven inquisitor in the fantasy-RPG series, has posted up a snapshot on Instagram of her back in the recording studio, accompanied by the hashtag ‘elf.' Naturally, this has sparked hope that Dragon Age 4 is in development, although it's worth remembering that this is by no means an official confirmation.
