Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake interview: how the classic RPG was revamped for its PS5 debut
The game’s creator talks about retaining color palettes, fine-tuning the game’s map and adding new features.
The launch of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is fast approaching on November 14. We had the opportunity to sit down for an interview with the game’s producer, Masaaki Hayasaka, to chat about this stunning remake that brings back the iconic masterpiece in HD-2D.
How HD-2D graphics draw out the full potential of this retro classic
PlayStation Blog: HD-2D has become much more popular since games like Octopath Traveler. What are some of the unique characteristics of this visual style? In a nutshell, HD-2D is a visual style that combines pixelated characters with 3D backgrounds. Personally, I think this style works better in retro titles. When the original game first came out, players roamed the world while picturing how beautiful the landscapes must be. HD-2D actually brings that world to life.

Dragon Quest III - Interview
Siliconera interviewed Masaaki Hayasaka about Dragon Quest III:
Interview: Preparing a HD and 2D Dragon Quest III Remake
When it comes to the Dragon Quest series, Square Enix is no stranger to Dragon Quest III remakes. The NES game ended up being remade for the Super Famicom. That version inspired a Game Boy Color release. Then there was the mobile adaptation, which showed up worldwide. With Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, we’re getting yet another take with a whole new graphical approach and even more original content than in past games. To learn more about its development and additions, Siliconera spoke with Producer Masaaki Hayasaka about the project.
Jenni Lada: What was it like to work on Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake after working on Octopath Traveler? How did your experience on it shape your approach to Dragon Quest?
Masaaki Hayasaka: I observed how HD-2D games are created and refined through Octopath Traveler up-close, so I didn’t have trouble regarding the sensibility of what we needed to accomplish to create an HD-2D game as it was ingrained in my body. On the other hand, the previous HD-2D games tended to have chic color palettes and atmospheres that were more reminiscent of the old Square games, but this time we had to craft a vivid, colorful atmosphere that felt true to Dragon Quest.

Hands-On with the First 10 Hours of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake + Launch Trailer
There is plenty to say about Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, but let’s start with the brand new launch trailer (that artwork above is also new) to get you in the spirit, with the rest of this preview below!
The most surprising thing about the first ten hours of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the reminder that I am obsessed with monster collecting in this series, dating all the way back to my first playthrough of Dragon Quest V. Want to give me a Pokémon game? Please don’t. Who wants to play a game where the only point is to recruit monsters? But put a Slime and a Golem together and let me trounce my enemies? Oh yes. Give me more. I will make sure it’s exactly the right time of day and I have exactly the right set-up to add any baddie to my team.
If you told me that’s how I’d open my preview for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake after the hour I spent with it at Summer Game Fest, I would have scoffed. After all, I love this series, and my thoughts on a game I already adored were glowing. The look, the sound, and the feel are just right, beautifully rendered in HD-2D with an updated, rollicking score, and enough quality-of-life upgrades to make this classic accessible to the less patient tastes of today’s RPG fan.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Made Me Think Differently About Combat
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Preview
I’ve put several hours into Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake at this point. I’m having a lot of fun so far, but! There is one little wrinkle I can’t stop thinking about. You see, square Enix recently added an auto-battle system to this series. It turns out having a combat system so easy to automate gets you thinking about the game in a whole new way. Not a good way, but definitely a new one.[...]
It’s been well over twenty years since I played the original Dragon Quest III. In other words, I’m utterly in the dark about how this all turns out. I’m very hopeful, at least based on what I’ve played so far. How big does this adventure get? What new features have I yet to encounter? And will there come a time when the auto-battle system is no longer viable? In spite of my struggles with certain modern mechanics, I’m having a lot of fun with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. I’m psyched to play the whole thing, and I suggest you keep an eye on it as well. If you’re a fan of classic Dragon Quest, I think this one just might be a winner.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Full Game Hands-On Preview: Switch and Steam Deck Tested
Back in 2017 when I played the first demo for what was tentatively called Project Octopath Traveler, little did I know that it would not only become one of my favorite RPGs from Square Enix, but the aesthetic would go on to feature in some of the best games the publisher has put out in recent years through Octopath Traveler II, Triangle Strategy, and the remake of Live A Live.
My first experience with Dragon Quest III was through the mobile release I read about back in 2014. Since then, I've played it on Nintendo Switch as well, and neither of these versions deliver a good enough experience. I expected Square Enix to just port that Switch version (based on the mobile release) over to more systems, but what we have here is multiple times better in every way.
When Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was announced, I wasn't sure what to expect with quality of life features, how its timeless aesthetic would be brought over to HD-2D, and whether it would stay true to its roots.
Thanks to early codes from Square Enix, I've had a chance to play the final game's early hours on both Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch for this preview. I'm going to focus on how both of these versions of the game feel after having played every HD-2D game on all platforms since 2018. Make sure to also read our earlier previews of the remake in June from Adam and last month from Josh.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake ‘Side Quest’ gameplay
Publisher Square Enix and developer Artdink Corporation have released seven minutes of new gameplay for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake running on PlayStation 5, which is focused on one of the game’s side quests.
Here is some additional information about what you will see in the footage:
The Sleepy Village of Norvik
The world of Dragon Quest III is large and full of things to discover. There’s a real sense of exploration and discovery, and exploring every nook and cranny of these beautiful lands is strongly encouraged. After all, who knows what an inquisitive adventurer might find?
Naturally, you may discover gear, items, and other valuables, but exploring can also open up new questlines for you to explore.
An example of this is shown in the new gameplay footage. If you venture north after traveling to Romaria, you may find the sleepy hamlet of Norvik—and when we say “sleepy,” we mean that literally.

Dragon Quest III - Interview
Simulation Daily interviewed producer Masaaki Hayasaka about Dragon Quest III:
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Interview - Producer Discusses the Choice of Art Style and More
We also learn the reason why Dragon Quest 3 has been remade before 1 and 2.
Following our hands-on time with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, we sat down with producer Masaaki Hayasaka to quiz him about the upcoming JRPG.
Asked why Square Enix decided to use the lovely HD-2D style for the remake, Hayasaka-san mentioned that one of the reasons is related to the way the Dragon Quest series has developed in Japan and outside of Japan.
While it’s very popular in Japan, it’s perhaps not quite as well known overseas. The team believes that the game has a lot of potential outside of Japan and the HD-2D style has been very well-received. They thought that associating the style with Dragon Quest would make it a lot more approachable for more people.
Incidentally, I didn’t miss the chance to suggest that Square Enix should really use this lovely visual style for more of its remakes of classic 2D JRPGs. I’m confident I spoke for many of you.

Dragon Quest III - Looking back
Inverse looks back at the Dragon Quest series:
35 Years Ago, One RPG Changed the Course of Video Game History
A true classic.
RPGs have been some of the most popular video games for decades. From Final Fantasy to Baldur’s Gate, players love being immersed in fantastical worlds where they can be the hero. It might sound simple, but that idea is a core tenet of what makes video games so special. But so many of those experiences simply wouldn’t exist without one pivotal game - Dragon Quest. While it’s far from the first RPG, Dragon Quest was a seminal game that completely redefined the genre at large, and kickstarted console RPGs as we know them. Video games today quite simply wouldn’t be the same without it.

Dragon Quest III - More Details
Couchpotato spotted some more info for Dragon Quest III for on RPGamer:
More Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Media, Details Released
Square Enix released additional images and information for the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The game is a remake of Dragon Quest III, which was released for the Famicom in Japan in 1988 before making its western debut in 1992, and utilises the HD-2D graphics style previously used in Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy. The game is the third title in the connected Erdrick saga, but takes place prior to the events of its predecessors, with the other two games set get new releases as Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake next year.
Dragon Quest III begins in the kingdom of Aliahan, with players controlling the son or daughter of the great hero Ortega. On their sixteenth birthday, they are given an order by the king to slay the Archfiend Baramos, a task that Ortega could not complete. Their journey takes them across the world, visiting various towns, castles, caves, and towers. The game will feature a day-night cycle while exploring, and players will be able to use a ship to travel across the seas. It retains the series’ traditional turn-based combat system, with the party having access to various spells and abilities.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will release on November 14, 2024. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Physical and digital pre-orders are available now, including a Collector’s Edition that features a set of character and monster acrylic blocks plus other bonus items.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: More than a fresh coat of paint
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is out on Nov. 14.
Remaking an old video game is always a dicey proposition — even more so if the game you’re remaking is held up as the pinnacle of the genre. That was not enough to dissuade Square Enix from giving the three original Dragon Quest games a high-definition reboot for modern consoles, starting with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake this fall.
Square Enix officially announced the HD remakes during the latest Nintendo Direct, but a week earlier, I actually had the chance to play Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
As Square Enix explained, Dragon Quest 3 is coming first because it takes place before the first and second games chronologically. Years after the great warrior Ortega tried and failed to defeat the evil Archfiend Baramos, you take on the role of his only descendant as you gather a party of heroes and set off to vanquish the villain for good.
