Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Retrospective

by Hiddenx, 09:48

Gamesradar looks back at Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen:

Dragon's Dogma 10th Anniversary: Revisiting the cult fantasy RPG that found its own weird path to adventure

Like its cyclical fantasy world, Dragon's Dogma has lived many lives. First released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, it was then re-released on those same consoles, updated and expanded, as Dark Arisen in 2013. In 2016 it returned with a PC port, then again for PS4 and Xbox One in 2017, and, eventually, it came to Switch in 2019. That its cult success endures to this day is testament to its wonderful, singular strangeness.

On the surface, Dragon's Dogma appears a rote open-world action RPG – Japanese developer Capcom trying its hand at Western ideas and Tolkienesque fantasy. Dig deeper, however, and you discover something far more distinct and alluring. Capcom had its own vision for what a game like this could be: something built on turning left wherever its contemporaries turn right.

At its core, Dragon's Dogma is about journeys – long, hard treks across its sprawling kingdom. It's about learning the landscape around you, managing dwindling supplies and the moment of relief when, after days on the road, you finally spot civilisation on the horizon. It's not afraid to inconvenience players in favour of giving its world and its quests a greater sense of scale. And it's not afraid to be scary – not simply hostile or difficult, but dangerous.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - is Capcom's fastest-selling PC game

by Hiddenx, 20:29

MCV reports that Capcom is selling the PC version of Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen like hot cakes:

The PC version of RPG Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is Capcom’s fast-selling game for the platform thus far.

The title – which debuted on January 15th on Steam – is also one of the publisher’s Top Three best-selling PC releases.

Dark Arisen is an enhanced version of 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma, which launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2013.

Capcom does note that though Dark Arisen is its fast-selling PC title so far, the initial sales of the console versions were higher as they benefited from a full marketing push pre-launch.

“We are extremely pleased with the performance of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. It is our fastest-selling PC title to date, thanks to an audience eagerly waiting for it, and us delivering to the level of quality gamers were expecting,” marketing director Antoine Molant told MCV. [...]

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Review

by Hiddenx, 23:17

The South China Morning Post likes Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen:

Game review: Dragon's Dogma is still a deeply enjoyable, totally immersive experience

This port from console to PC is showing its age a little, but it remains a gripping game that will consume many of your hours.

Halfway down the winding ramp, I realised how big a mistake I’d made.

Up to this point I’d been holding my own against any bandits and creatures I came across. But the lurching troll ahead of me stood taller than I did, and he wasn’t very happy either. Without thinking, I pulled out my bow and let arrows fly. Beside me my companions raged forward, their spells and swords lashing out at the beast. He took them down first, leaving me no choice but to retreat and try to escape while my pawns lay dying in a pool of their own blood. I never made it to the exit. I’m not sure how things turned so badly. I only know that troll was out for blood, and mine must have been pretty tasty.

[...]

Overall Capcom has done a solid job bringing a very well-made RPG to the PC. The game features the massive world of Granys and is filled with tons of customisation options, as well as hundreds of complex and dynamic combat situations. It’s really one of the better RPGs we’ve seen of late, and I only experienced two crashes during my time with the game. I also never had any problems with the game’s frame rate, which was a huge issue on the console release. If you’re looking for a game that combines elements of Skyrim, Monster Hunter, Dark Souls and Japanese RPGs, then Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen should be on your watch list.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - You Must Play

by Aubrielle, 00:52

Vice chimes in on why you absolutely must play Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

When Dragon's Dogma first popped up in 2012, there didn't appear to be much reason to get excited. During the days of the Xbox 360 and PS3 we were frankly inundated with bland over-the-shoulder shooters and action RPGs, and Capcom's oddly flat-looking offering didn't appear to be anything different.

But underneath the muddy veneer hid an admittedly fairly ropey game that was still quite genuinely worth getting psyched about. Four years later, and a swanky re-release on PC (in its Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen guise, albeit now supporting 4K resolution and looking delicious) has people like me popping out of the woodwork to defend this gorgeous flawed-gem of a game, which having finally waved goodbye to many technical issues that plagued it originally is now the definite version to play. Here are five reasons why it's worth your attention.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Review

by Hiddenx, 00:40

Game-Debate has reviewed Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen:

Hackest Thou and Slashest Thou, Brave Sir.

CAPCOM.  Whilst enjoying Dragon’s Dogma, that’s the word to hold onto.  CAP.  COM.  Now don’t forget it.  Okay?  It’ll crop up again later.  Promise. Initially that’s precisely what I did.  Forgot CAPCOM.  And it almost spoiled what turned out to be a wickedly enjoyable game.  Read on, brave adventurer, if you dare…

[...]

Viewed from this new angle, what previously seemed to be liabilities now become assets.  It’s not a half-arsed, failed shot at aping Skyrim; instead it’s Golden Axe dragged into the 21st century and fed with steroids.  It’s straightforward and two-dimensional because it’s supposed to be.  The plot, the landscape and its denizens are trite and reductionist because they’re supposed to be.  You’re supposed to beat them up, not try and make friends with them.  Freed from the heavy expectations of almost every other modern RPG, it’s immense fun.

Dragon's Dogma - Performance Analysis

by Aubrielle, 01:07

DSO Gaming takes a look at Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen's performance.

Thanks to Couch for tonight's news.

Given its old-gen nature, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is not really a demanding title. Even though the game scales well on multiple CPU cores (thanks to the MT Framework that was always friendly to multi-core CPUs), it does not require a high-end CPU in order to run with constant 60fps. In order to find out whether an old CPU was able to offer an ideal gaming experience, we simulated a dual-core CPU with and without Hyper Threading. Without HT, we experienced minor stutters. With HT enabled, the game ran with constant 60fps and without any stutters. In other words, those with Intel’s i3 CPUs will not be CPU limited under any-case scenario.

Regarding the game’s GPU requirements, Capcom recommends an NVIDIA GTX760 or an equivalent card. And we are happy to report that this recommendation is spot on. Due to the lack of an SLI profile, our GTX690 performed similarly to a GTX680 (that is slightly faster than the GTX760). And while there was one scene in which our framerate dropped at 60fps (in the prologue when you first encounter the dragon), the game ran with constant 70fps at 1080p with max settings.

Dragon’s Dogma performs great on the PC, no doubt about that. PC gamers won’t encounter any stutters while exploring the game’s world, there are no mouse acceleration and smoothing issues, the mouse is supported in all menus, and there are proper mouse/keyboard indicators while playing the game. And Capcom has provided a respectable amount of options to tweak in case you own a really weak PC system.

...

All in all, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen performs great on the PC. Thanks to the MT Framework, PC gamers will be able to enjoy this game on a variety of PC systems. It’s also great that the game ‘behaves’ like a PC game. However, Capcom did not do much to improve the game’s dated visuals. Yes, PC gamers can use the ENBSeries mod and Reshade in order to improve them, however it would be great if the developers actually did something more about it. A more advanced lighting system, higher polygon characters, out-of-the-box support for NVIDIA’s HBAO+ and better textures would do wonders to this game.

RPG Site: 9/10

Attack of the Fanboy

The Verdict

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen may be a few years old now, but the new PC version is still a blast to play and offers a nice mix of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and From Software’s Dark Souls. There are dozens of hours of epic RPG action to be had here and while the complete package isn’t perfect, that doesn’t stop the experience from being a heck of a lot of fun.

Hardcore Gamer: 3.5/5

Examiner:

The Bottom Line

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is an incredible game. The amount of content is incredible. The ability to control and mix up your character at any time is incredible. The variety in not only location but weapons, armor, and items are incredible. The ability to jump and grab a giant enemy, scaling it to stab it in the face while it thrashes about is incredible. You get it, now if you’re a fan of Fantasy RPG, saving the kingdoms from dragons and demons, and extremely satisfying gameplay from nearly every aspect, buy Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.

Dragon's Dogma - Sequel Could Still Happen

by Aubrielle, 10:00

In an interview with PC Gamer, Dragon's Dogma producer Minae Matsukawa announced that a genuine sequel could definitely happen.

Thanks, Renethiel!

(The full interview was covered by Hidden x here.)

A sequel to Dragon's Dogma hasn't been ruled out by Capcom.

Speaking to PC Gamer, producer Minae Matsukawa stated that Dragon's Dogma 2 could still happen. "The Dragon’s Dogma development team members often talk about the possibility of a sequel," said Matsukawa. She added that a continuation really depends on fan feedback for the upcoming PC port of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, as that "will increase the chances that we can look into the possibility of continuing the series."

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Interview

by Hiddenx, 19:43

PC Gamer interviewed the Dragon's Dogma devs who are working on the PC port:

The intriguing, innovative RPG Dragon's Dogma will finally arrive on PC on January 15, but what does the game's sudden re-emergence mean for the series? And how will the PC edition differ from the original console release? We put a few questions to DDDA producer, Minae Matsukawa, director Kento Kinoshita, and PC producer Jon Airhart.

PC Gamer: Between this release and Dragon’s Dogma Online, it seems like the series still means a lot to Capcom—where is Capcom at in terms of considering a sequel?

Matsukawa: Thanks for your interest in the series! The Dragon’s Dogma development team members often talk about the possibility of a sequel. We’d love to hear the opinions and feedback from players of the upcoming PC port of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, as that will increase the chances that we can look into the possibility of continuing the series.

PC Gamer: Is the team that made the original game still together?

Matsukawa: Of course! The team from DDDA worked together in 2015 on Dragon’s Dogma Online, which was released for the Japanese market.

PC Gamer: For those who don’t know, what was the origin of Dragon’s Dogma’s development? What was the idea that drove development to begin with?

Kinoshita: It all started with an idea by the Hideaki Itsuno, the director of the original Dragon’s Dogma. He wanted to create a game with an online system that you could use asynchronously, like an internet forum rather than a live chat. His initial ‘pawn’ system concept was the starting point, and from there the open world of Dragon’s Dogma was fleshed out, and its fluid and flexible combat system.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - First Impressions

by Hiddenx, 16:19

Gaming Age likes the performance of the upcoming PC version of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

[...] While the base mechanics, questing, looting, and action-focused gameplay were certainly highlights of Dark Arisen back in 2013, the weird decision to letterbox the game, along with somewhat frequent framerate issues, were not. Those are two things, among others, that have been fixed here. The letterboxing effect is gone, without any noticeable changes to aspect ratios, stretching or any other adverse effects to the visuals. And the framerate? Well, you won’t be disappointed. Playing this on a relatively modest PC rig, running a 750ti and i5-4670k, I’ve had virtually no issues with most settings on high while running in 1080p, maintaining 60 frames per second throughout. Even in some of the dense, forested sections, encountering larger enemies like the Chimera, Dark Arisen on PC doesn’t seem to hitch up at all. I’ve been suitably impressed by this build thus far, and ideally this will carry over to the final retail build. [...]

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - FAQ

by Aubrielle, 02:53

The new FAQ for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen on Steam gets right to the point and answers a lot of concerns.  It's definitely worth a read.

Q) Does the game still have letterboxing?
A) PC version now features full screen rendering without letterboxing on standard 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen monitors.

Q) Is the Eternal Ferrystone and bonus items/gears available in the PC version?
A) Yes! Bonus Items immediately accessible are: Swordman’s Ring, Daggerist’s Ring, Staff-Bearer’s Ring, The Lion’s Spine, Robe of Enlightenment, Wavering Cloth, Vagabond Armor, Tiara of Enlightenment, Ruminator’s Monocle, Jester’s Cap, and Fiend-luring Incense. Completing the first escort quest and reaching Gran Soren will unlock the following: Eternal Ferrystone, Set of Fop’s Trek Wear, Voldoan Armor, Priest Vestments, Lady’s Trek Wear, Queen’s Clothing, and Nun Vestments.

Q) What languages are supported in-game? Any plans to implement additional localization? What about voiceover?
A) The game supports English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese text as they were originally available on the console version. There are currently no plans to add other languages. The game includes English voiceover. Japanese VO unfortunately is not supported due to licensing restrictions.

Q) What’s the maximum frame rate supported by the game?
A) Dragon’s Dogma currently supports up to 150 frames per second, which means the game can take full advantage of 144Hz monitors provided you have a capable PC. Please note an upper limit has been imposed at 150 fps in order to avoid any potential game-breaking issues. (e.g., physics interaction and rendering error)

Q) What is the maximum resolution supported?
A) The game supports arbitrary resolutions exposed through Windows. We’ve only tested up to 4K (3,840 x 2,160) resolution, but the game theoretically should work beyond that provided you have a capable graphics card and monitor that supports it.

Q) Can I use my saves from Xbox 360 or PS3?
A) No. Saves are not directly compatible with the PC version.

Q) Does the game support modding? Any plans to integrate with Steam Workshop?
A) Dragon’s Dogma does not officially provide mod functionality nor tools to enable community mods. This is primarily due to limitations on the proprietary MT Framework engine and MTF development tools used to create the game. Unfortunately, tools only exist as a full-on development suite, contains licensed middleware solutions, fonts, and assets that cannot be sub-licensed, and therefore commissioned for internal use only.

Q) What’s Capcom’s stance on fan-made mods?
A) We won’t stop modders from tinkering around with the Steamworks edition of the game. The act of modding Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and use of modded content is not officially warranted or supported by Capcom. Play at your own risk.

Q) What DLCs are included? Are there any plans for future DLCs?
A) Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen for Steam is the complete package. There is no additional content to purchase beyond the base game! All previously released DLCs on the console, including pre-order exclusives and bonus content, are all baked into the game.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Some Previews

The PC version of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will be launched on Januar 15, 2016 - here are some previews:

Destructoid:

Dragon's Dogma runs wonderfully on PC

Smooth like butta

At some point, I downloaded Dragon's Dogma onto my PS3, but never got around to playing it. I'd scroll through and tell myself "some other day." Well, apparently that other day is the day it comes to PC.

I hear tell that the framerate was quite poor on the console version, which seems like a shame. I've played a couple of hours of the PC version so far, and have yet to dip below 60 frames per second.

Damn this game is great! [...]

PCGamesN:

Conveying the charm of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen by kicking people off cliffs

[...] The game's out, complete with Dark Arisen expansion and all the console DLC, this January, and I promise it's way more exciting than a three-year-old console port has any right to be.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Preview

by Aubrielle, 17:09

PC Gamer discusses Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, its lack of level scaling, and its true place on the PC.

A dragon attacks your village and you bravely face it with a rusty sword. As you hack hopelessly at its legs, it plucks out your heart, tossing it into its mouth before flying away. You lie dead on the beach—or so it seems. Waking up, you discover you’re The Arisen: a legendary warrior destined to drive the beast back to whence it came. Tough break.

Yes, this is a fantasy RPG, full of beards, wizards, jerkins, and goblins. But it’s by a Japanese studio—led by Devil May Cry director Hideaki Itsuno—and isn’t the fusty old swords-and-elves games you might be expecting. It takes hokey Western fantasy tropes and injects them with humour, personality and some clever game design. Dragon’s Dogma was released three years ago on consoles to great critical acclaim, but it always felt like a game that belonged on PC—and now, finally, it’s coming.
