Dungeon Crawlers HD - Review @ GamerHeadlines
Andy Leavy of GamerHeadlines has reviewed Dungeon Crawlers HD. Some snippets:
Dungeon Crawlers HD is a turn-based RPG created by Drowning Monkeys. Dungeon Crawlers HD is a fun and lighthearted take on the usually serious Role-Playing genre. The game focuses much more on your party characters and tactics in battle rather than crafting and inventory management — kind of like a dungeon crawling Pokémon.
Dungeon Crawlers HD surprisingly takes place in a dungeon that has been infested by goblins, banshees, spooky spectres and all kinds of enemies. You play with a party of three RPG stereotypes, Payter the strong, dim-witted Warrior, Aegon the intelligent, silver-tonged Sorcerer and Roy, the chubby, lovable Mage. Another character, Failston, is unlocked later on in the game when you free him from prison, and is quite useful as he has the ability to disarm traps. The three are fairly generic characters, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it as the saying goes.
However, Dungeon Crawlers HD is by no stretch of the imagination a generic RPG. As I said previously, the game is a much more lighthearted and humorous take on the genre. Dungeon Crawlers HD focuses purely on tactics in battle rather than crafting, leveling up and inventory management. The game puts emphasis on you choosing the right moves with every character when in an encounter (battle) because taking the wrong approach will see you lose very quickly by getting overwhelmed by enemies if you make the wrong decisions. The exclusion of inventory management and crafting is helpful, as you can pay more attention to your tactics rather than having to constantly keep your eye on your weapons and their condition. That said, many people love these features and feel they are imperative to an RPG. My problem, however, stems from the lack of ability to level up your characters. Yes, they can level up and their respective skills will get a boost every level, but like a Pokémon reaching its next level, the skills that get an increase are automatic. This is a problem because players like myself want to feel in control of their characters and want to be able to level a character’s skills up as they please. For example, if you feel Roy needs his strength increased, you should have the ability to allocate the amount of skill points you want to his strength and other skills. It wasn’t the best decision on the development team’s side. [...]
Overall, Dungeon Crawlers HD is a unique and fun take on the RPG genre. The exploration and battling in are great, along with a humorous story and lovable characters. However, the game does have some problems such as a lack of major RPG elements, a lack of control over character skills and non-solid objects that don’t block projectiles. Other than that, Dungeon Crawlers HD‘s positives outweigh its negatives, which makes it a great game for any RPG fan.
Final Score: 7/10 Decent
